  • In an effort to improve comfort and performance, I install tubeless tires on my touring bike. However, I have questions. Are these tires suited for touring? Would they be dependable on rides through remote areas? I try to determine if they are up for the task.

Update: The tight clearance with the Almotions caused some issues on my latest tour. I’ll be sharing details soon.

I have a Trek Checkpoint that was set up tubeless by the dealer before I took delivery of the bike. With about 1,000 trouble-free miles on the stock tires, I recently went on a 300-mile tour. On about the 4th day, I got a flat which was large enough that the sealant couldn't seal it by itself. I used a bacon strip to seal the hole, something I'd never tried before, pumped up the tire, and went on my merry way. On the last day of the trip, I got another flat and didn't even know it until my riding buddy told me that my rear tire looked a little low. I pumped it back up at a coffee stop and we continued on. When we made camp I found the underside of my top bag to be completely sprayed with sealant. I'd gotten a puncture and it sealed up without me doing anything. At around 1,300 miles my rear tire is about warn out and I'll be replacing the tires shortly. Schwalbe is on my shortlist. I will definitely be sticking with tubeless.

Bacon to the rescue! Thanks Jim, I appreciate you sharing your experience with TL. Hopefully I'll never need to remove these tires until they are ready for replacement. I need to pick up some bacon!👍

That is a lot of issues for the mileage imo

@@oreocarlton3343 The trip was in Florida where, I'm told, a lack of snow means that the roads aren't plowed and thus the shoulders accumulate junk over the years. I certainly saw a lot of it compared to the roads in Washington State.

Very informative video thank you. Had a puncture with my Marathon Greens today (looks like a pinch flat), but am now thinking of going tubeless and this is helping my research

Schwalbe almotion tyres are awesome. I have used the old version 40-622 from 2014 and did 20.000 kilometres on them never had a puncture. Then I gave the bike to my brother and got a new bike with the new tle Almotion 50-622. Done 12.000 km so far also without punctures. 10 years without flats is awesome. I hope they prove as reliable to you too

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Almotions and taking the time to comment. Good to hear, I'm looking forward to putting them to work this spring and summer on a couple of tours I'm planning. Loving them so far!

Welcome to the club. Glad to hear with the higher air volume, softer sidewall and tubeless you're having a more supple ride. I have Schwalbe on my road bike and I'm a big fan, Good install explanation

Thanks Joe! Yeah I’m always a bit late when it comes to adopting new tech, but I’m really happy with these new tires so far.

@@TheOutsidePerks I'm the opposite as an early adapter ($$) sometimes which can be a mistake as there's no need to change what works most times

I rode the Schwalbe Almotion 29x2.15 tubeless on my Trek 920 up the California coast & from Southern California to St. Joseph, Missouri. I never had a flat & I rode thru all kinds of stuff. Sand, cactus, rock, metal shard strewn highways, you name it. I think I put some air in the tire once. Tubeless is the way to go. I don't drive a car so I'm on my bicycle everyday even when I'm not touring. Never had a flat with tubeless Schwalbe. The best. I do carry bacon strips & a small bottle of Stans fluid just in case, though.

Thanks for the feedback Joseph. Good to hear your Almotions have been reliable. I’m hoping to give mine a good workout this Spring, they have been performing well on day rides. 👍

Just took a set a set of Teravail Washburn off my Salsa Journeyer and installed Green Marathon as I will be using it more for light touring than gravel grinding. I've never fought with tires more than I did on this swap WOW. Used everything in the tool box e.g. levers, soapy water, Park Tool PTS-1 and several curse words LOL. Breaking the bead was hard enough, getting the Schwalbe tires to seat was a real PITA but with persistence I got it done.
I've had Marathons in the past on a touring bike and although stiff, I never had a flat and to me that's a reasonable trade-off for a little ride quality. I can't imagine wresting with those tires road-side YIKES. Makes me wonder if perhaps the WTB rims are part of the problem???
Happy trails and best of luck with the Almotions.

Yup, I've got TL on 2 other bikes and have never had any flats or issues. In touring mode I like to keep it simple to avoid any meltdowns on the shoulder. I'm digging it so far! 🚴
