OREGON COAST BOTTOM FISHING - PART 2 - SEA BASS & LINGCOD WITH RAY BLY - GOFISH CAM FOOTAGE
On June 1, 2024, I went out on the ocean with one of my first known viewers, Ray Bly. Even though we've been friends for years, often sharing fishing info, this was the first time we met in person. We headed out of Newport Bay and spent the day off the Oregon Coast with non-stop fishing action.
ON PART 1, where we caught our limit of SEA BASS along with some smaller lingcod. THIS IS PART 2, where we try for our limit of LINGCOD, and even give you a view of the strikes on the bottom of the ocean using a GOFISH cam.

I'm often asked for recommendations for a reasonably priced steelhead rod, well this rod recently came on the market for $99.99. I'm already a huge fan of Shimano Reels so I was intrigued about the quality claims on this series of rods. So I bought one myself with intent to test it against my G.Loomis steelhead rods I regularly fish. I was quite surprised! I field tested it with all of my favor...

Do all fishing rods go into two pieces
@@eddieapatino7039 all of my steelhead and salmon rods do. My bass rods are one piece, but are much shorter.
the river is my backyard im living the dream right now, but i just cant catch anything il go try that haha
Lucky you! There are a bunch of fish in there, you’ll get it!
@@RAGEFISHING i hope soo no luck today too😩😩
@AdrenalineRushMX are you talking about the McKenzie River? It’s so clear, midday can be tough. Maybe fish first and last light?
@@RAGEFISHING no its the red river in quebec canada haha ,but yes its probably because of the time i fish ,some people get some crazy big fish here, Or im just not good 😅😂
last years i got a good one mid day ,so that why i still fish mid day
For quick transport to the nearby lake, pond or river……. This one’s the winner. Thanks for the tip
Yep, cheap and easy. Definitely not for long distances.
Thats so awesome...I love that place. Great job beating the big C!
Thank you, she’s going on 4 years cancer free! And has been doing much more fishing, especially has a knack for surf perch. 🎣
@@RAGEFISHING Our fight is just beginning. It helps hearing your story....
@chrisgomez4132 if you have any questions you can reach out to me on my Facebook page or instagram. Number 1, be POSITIVE, they have come so far in breast cancer treatment that it’s hard to keep up. Most of the books are outdated, like ‘breast cancer husband’ is a good one I always recommend, but it’s about 13-14 years old now. Janina did a short series on RUclips about her journey, you can find it on ‘Rage Against Cancer’. You’ll see the similar logo and editing style. We have had multiple friends go through the same journey since ours, and all have pulled through.

This is not even a question for me: Gonna grab myself the tools, and take off the treble hooks on all of my rooster tails. Because, I cannot stress just how much of a pain treble hooks are for me. Especially if I am fishing trout, and want to get the hook out of them, either for release and/or keeping. Also, with single hooks I do not have to worry as much about getting pricked and/or injured, like I do with the treble hook.
I agree with you on all your points! Thanks for the feedback. 🎣
Any idea what the handle is on the gunnel behind him? He keeps moving it while trying to stay on the humps.
It’s the handle for the livescope transducer, he designed it himself if I remember correctly.
@@RAGEFISHING pretty cool setup. Do you remember what sort of tin boat it was? Or custom?
@curtiso2680 It’s a Riverwolf boat, not sure the model.
for the fishing footage with the 12 were you using the media mod mic or just built in audio?
Built in mic, I don’t use the media mod for normal fishing because it’s not waterproof.
Sweet video, so much fun! I got out in the ocean myself 3 days ago! Pro tip, when u get hung up out there, move the boat above it and u can get most of them back! Just like we do salmon fishing.
Thanks Kyle! And thanks for the tip, we fortunately got that camera snag back!
@RAGEFISHING So glad to see your channel growing! Ray Bly was awesome! He's got it dialed in!
@FishTramp thank you, I appreciate you being a part of it! 😊
I love the camera, its so cool to watch. Ive seen them mounted on downriggers for salmon, but never before bottom fishing, for obvious reasons. Congrats on your first ling! Pretty nice ocean that day, although that gentle rise and fall can drop a lot of people. Awesome trip!
It was a fun trip! Next time we will set up the camera for Salmon trolling, that’s what I bought it for. I was sad to learn GoFish discontinued their business; so once this one is gone, it’s gone.
To fish or not to fish? What a stupid question. Great stuff! Thanks
Thanks Mike! 🎣
That fish is a copper rockfish and a big one at that
That’s cool! I looked at the difference in the fishing regulations. I’ll let Ray know. Thanks!
@RAGEFISHING Yep, a Copper.
That's what I meant I was pretty excited at the size, and the first thing that came to my head, little surprised at how small the lings were. next time:)
I 100% need this application. How did you mount the winch to the finished ceiling? Two, what was the length of chain you purchased?
I placed a 2x4 over my trusses and drilled holes through the 2x4 and drywall. I used heavy bolts to mount the hoist and some pieces of 1x4 for spacers. As far as the chain, I can’t remember the length, but I bought way more than necessary, so once I get it all situated, I have extra. The hoist has also doubled as a deer hanger fyi.
@@RAGEFISHINGYou are always so responsive. I think I found an easy way out. You can get a portable winch. That way you only need a hook in the ceiling. The winch then just hooks to it. Plentiful weight options. You can even get them with remotes. Thanks again for your reply.
You’re welcome! The portable winch sounds like a great idea.
Cool video, just getting started and thanks for the walk through of the settings.
Thank you! I hope it helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. You can also get ahold of me on my Rage Fishing Facebook page and Instagram @steelheadrage.
Never wanted to DIY a casting floor on that thing?
Not really! 😁
That's a beautiful trout!
It was a good one!
I would note here that Lamiglas also make some VERY expensive salmon and steelhead today. I think the center pin rods are over $600
I’ve owned some of their higher end American made rods. These X11’s are made overseas to keep the cost down. My first float rod was a Certified Pro steelhead rod, I still have it. It’s responsible for many steelhead!
Oh nice. I just move to Alaska in 2021 and mostly did salt/brackish water before. Some rainbow trout fishing as well. I got the X-11 spinner and baitcaster so see how they do on salmon up here. I spent more on the reels to be honest. Great content by the way.
@@davidlawson3400 thank you!
That'd be the Hammer of Thor. If you watch Ray, he takes one leg and keeps it locked against the side of the boat, giving him better balance. His rod tip was also lower than yours. When i am vertical jigging, my tip is just off the water, giving me more swing on my hookset. And using a level wind reel like Ray gives you more hookset power, although you warmed up and slammed those last two rockfish like a champ. It didn't hurt that Ray was watching the machine and could quickly switch depths based on what he saw. I tend to use one to two feet max on my upward flips when jigging, and will frequently change depths if i don't get bit very soon. They can nip alot sometimes, too, like you both experienced. Im getting seriously hungry thinking about those white meat fillets! Were you bleeding those right after applying the hammer to them? It is best to do so. You'll notice the difference between pink and white fillets based on that. Definitely a fun day and a solid first time after rockfish for you! Well done!
The hammer of Thor! Yes. 🤣 Thanks for all the helpful tips, I learned a bunch on this trip and will keep your tips in mind next time. Ray was a patient coach and you could tell be the footage he was focused on my success. And in the end, I figured it out thanks to him. We did bleed the fish by cutting the gills and placing them in that bleeder chute (I’m not sure what it’s called) Ray had on his boat. The fillets turned out great. You’ll enjoy Part 2! That gofish cam footage was pretty cool.
How was bar crossing? We have a smaller 16ft and have the itch to get out there for some rock fishing but the bars make us nervous. Great content … eagerly awaiting part 2!
It wasn’t bad, but the ocean conditions were fairly decent that morning even though it was a little ‘Rollie Pollie’ as Ray put it. I’m in the same boat as you (so to say 😬), I have a Hewescraft 160 Sportsman and would love to be able to go out there on my own. I think it would have to be a bit calmer for me to feel good about it, but I’m new to boating so that may change. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! Part 2 is pretty awesome. The gofish cam footage was pretty incredible!
Same! We’re about a year in with ours. Already want a bigger one hahahah! Hope to see ya out there 🙂
The ocean looks nice. Good job on sea bass. Now you have to get a big lingcod.
It was an awesome trip! I couldn’t get the whole trip into one video without it being too long. We catch several more lingcod in part 2 and even capture a few hits on my gofish underwater cam.
This was like the day I had mackinaw and kokanee fishing on Odell last weekend. On a boat with 25-pound fish coming on board, I caught the fewest and smallest; and let me tell you, it was a rough crowd. 😂
A new fishery always presents a learning curve, but I had a perma-smile the whole day.
@@RAGEFISHING It sure looked like fun; and you recovered from your rough start better than I did. But I had a great time on my trip too, even while serving as the punchline of all the boat's jokes.
How are these e6x vs the IMX pro in terms of weight?
I haven’t owned one, I’ve looked at them but haven’t weighed them. They don’t have a 9’6” model, but do have 9’2” and 9’9”. So it would be hard to compare them exactly. As I did in this video, the older IMX 9’8” was slightly lighter by a fraction of an ounce. The other thing I noticed about the IMX PRO is they are moderate fast compared to fast action on the E6X. Here’s my best guess, they will be slightly lighter in the blank, but it probably wouldn’t be noticeable in the hand. I’m sure the PRO’s are incredible rods, but I just think they are above the price point most fishermen are willing to pay. It’s hard enough to convince folks to buy an E6X! 😁 Good luck, let me know if you get the chance to weigh one.
@@RAGEFISHING Thank you so much for the additional information. Tightlines!!
@@fdrifareal you’re welcome! 🎣
Good review..thx
Some great ideas there, I’m struggling to get a good perspective on my fishing videos so this has given me a few ideas thanks
Glad it helped!
Just moved to Oregon. Excited to start fishing! Can I ask where about you’re at in this video?
I generally don’t name locations on public sites to avoid overcrowding one location, unless it’s obvious by landmark or otherwise. The wonderful thing about surf perch is you can find them up and down the coast, I haven’t been to a beach where I haven’t found a bite. Just watch out for the few beaches which are ‘Marine Protection Areas’ where fishing is banned, they are listed in the Fishing Regulations.
Nicely done! Dexter has been on fire this spring. I caught several beautiful, chunky fish about that size over the last couple of months.
I’ve taken my dad out there a couple times and we had lots of action! I didn’t take GoPros today just to give Janina time to get used to the boat, but next time I’ll do a full video! 🎣
That was a nice trail and a nice beach too
It’s a good work out too!
Hell yeah buddy awesome, I also believe you can catch perch on just about any beach as well! I carry sand shrimp and razor clam with me, I used to use those worms but got out fished by everyone not using them during our perch meetups! Also bonus catches are nice too they seem to come on sand shrimp ( what fish doesn’t eat that) just use magic thread it will hold the bait on. I’m sure you already knew that 🤣 anywho nice video man! 🤘 never fished there
Great video, the wife and I want to take that hike, Had no idea it was there.
Thank you Ray! It’s a great hike, not quite as muddy in the summer. The views are incredible.
Gona do that hike in next couple weeks..thanks for the vids bro
Thanks TR! It’s a cool hike with some incredible views.
New gopro user here, thanks for the info! What's the 2-piece rod locks you put on at the truck?
You’re welcome! They are fishing butlers. I have about 30 sets. 😁
@@RAGEFISHING haha awesome! I’ve only ever seen the Velcro straps. These ties look better. Thank you!
Great video Barry. I have never fished for surf perch off the beach. My dad and I would fish off the rocks at Yachats, but I haven’t done that in years. When you and Janina camp at the coast are you camping at Honeyman or Washburne? My wife and I really like Washburne. A lot smaller and more quiet than Honeyman.
Thanks Corby! We actually stay at Harbor Vista, it’s a Lane County park. We have to drive to our surf fishing spots, but plenty of them around Florence.
great video barry love watching u guys fish together and that was a cool hike to the beach ive actually never been to that beach before even though i grew up on the coast! i really need to learn to fish for surf perch its a fish ive never caught when i grew up fishing the coast we always fished the jettys or bay
Thank you, they are a fun species to target. They bite so aggressively, but they are either on or they’re off. Like my bites just didn’t get the hook point, maybe they were just little ones. However, we should have started 2 hours before high tide and we would have done much better.
That looks amazing! It’s not often you get a beach to yourself.
I wish we had more time, Janina was so excited to catch the first one, she kind of forgot she wasn’t wearing her usual waders and the waves came over her hiking shoes. Not a good way to start on a cool May 3rd morning on the Oregon coast. She was a trooper and stayed a bit longer, but with that rain and over 2 miles to go, our trip was cut short. We’ll be back!
Janina, Queen of Hobbitt Beach, and Queen of Surf Perch!
Yep! She always finds them. 🎣😊
Another fun adventure, thanks for having us along! I might try that same hike this weekend
It’s pretty awesome. And a good work out! I try to stay in ‘backpacking’ shape all year, so hikes like that with a lot of elevation are helpful.
I was gonna like this video until I saw you're wearing a Sitka jacket, then got outfished by the lady 😂 Is surf perch open year round in Oregon?
Oh man, you’re a tough one to get a like outta. 😁 I’m a First Lite guy, but do have a few Sitka pieces for their quick drying qualities. That piece is the Core Hoody. And yeah, surf perch is open year round.
Oh, and Janina always outfishes me. 😊
Just wanted to say thanks for sharing this info. I am new to the GoPro game (believe it or not) and that chest pack and mount will be perfect for creek fly fishing.
It works great. Either one. Thanks for the feedback. 🎣
Instructor Extraordinaire Is your Title today. For small stream summer run steelhead, my favorite store bought spinner is the 3/8th oz Panther Martin with a gold blade and black body with yellow dots. It comes with a small but sticky sharp treble hook that lasts for one steelhead before you replace the mangled remains, and i use a siwash when i do. Your color combos are spot-on, and you save lots of money with the end result of a better spinner by ordering components from Pen-Tac. Ive done really well with tarnished brass blades on brighter days. Thanks!
Thanks William! That Panther Martin, Gold blade with black body, is a good one. I had good luck with it on Wilderness lakes.
great video man!
Thanks!
I have also caught Bass with the silver blade and black body spinner. Oregon has black/silver dragonfly’s in the summer, they must resemble the spinner to Bass. I believe you have caught Kokanee with these spinners too. 😊
Genuine Silver blades with a black body have been a good color for me, especially for steelhead. I’m not surprised bass hammer them too!
Do you know the overall weight of the completed spinner? Also, do you know if they make those small spinner bodies in tungsten for more weight while keeping the smaller profile? I always have trouble getting smaller spinners down in deeper moving water. Have never built my own but it looks fun and rewarding, I'm gonna look at getting some supplies ordered to try it out. Thanks for the video.
I just weighted one, it came in at .123 oz., so about an 1/8 oz. They only make them in brass, I’m not sure if other manufacturers make tungsten, but these lures are dense and get down in the water well. The larger sizes, like 3-5 have 2 body sizes, a standard and a heavy one. I do use the heavier ones for some of my steelhead spinners. Thanks for the feedback, it’s appreciated.
Beautiful family. Great video.
Thank you! 😊
Definitely single hook works best on trout.
Agreed!
They get big in that lake
I’ve heard! My buddy Dave has caught some good ones.
Got a nice 9’ length 6-12lb Scimitar steelhead rod directly from Shimano a year ago on close out for $29 with free shipping. Just the cardboard shipping tube and postage probably cost them $29.00. Deal of the century. Love the rod. As fine in finish, appearance, and features as any $200 rod I’ve ever purchased. Shimano rocks.
That is a steal! And you’re right, if one of us tried shipping a rod it would cost that in shipping costs!
Seems like every time I make the long drive to the Oregon coast to fish winter steelhead the rivers are blown out and flowing with mud from heavy rain. A fellow could drown from the rainfall just rolling the window down near the Trask or Nehalem. I’ve even seen fish standing on fence posts trying to catch their breath. So, it is nice to sit here and couch surf in John Day …. I’ll be content to watch you fish while daydreaming about steelhead fishing next winter 2024/2025 (Lord willing). Thank you for the excellent content, Tom
🤣🤣 One of the best comments in Rage Fishing history. Glad you enjoyed us goofballs trying to find some winter fish in that deluge. You have to be half mad to be Winter Steelheader.
The oars are to short , need 8 ft.
They work good for me.

Thanks Tom! I’m slowly getting used to it. I finally got it up to the lower Willamette to fish for Chinook. but we didn’t have 1 take down. I will try again soon and hopefully get dad to go before the season is over.
Hell yah buddy love some surf perch ! 🤘🐟
It’s pretty awesome. Standing on true edge of the continent, casting into the waves. 🎣🌊
@@RAGEFISHING I agree man nothing more relaxing, my buddy caught a steely fishing in the surf last month on my latest video, it was an epic surprise. We were using sandshrimp
