  • This video shows the effectiveness of using spinners for fishing for steelhead. A polished brass or 24K Gold Plated Spinner with a black body works great on bright sunny days for winter steelhead.
    NOTE: This video was recorded on February 9th, 2023 during my trial stage with Stryker Fishing Rods. They are quality made rods, but weren't for me. I have switched back to exclusively using G.Loomis Rods for steelhead fishing. I am not sponsored by G.Loomis, but they are the best rods I've used.

    20 inches, but he thought he was 20 pounds! Truth be told, I've experienced harder than normal fights to find the fish bleeding. I think they have that desperation knowing they are hurt. Back in the day, when it was a 2 fish limit in Washington, i still practiced strict C & R, but I had the luxury of keeping badly hooked fish. Toungue and gill hooked fish that are bleeding, I believe, usually stand the longest odds of survival. If i see no blood, i cut the line and hope for the best, but a spinner or spoon will move around and possibly cause further damage as the fish continues its journey. In those cases, if possible, I'll cut the hook in half, difficult to impossible while fishing alone. I know just how you feel, but it doesnt happen that often, thankfully. I had no idea there was another edisode in this series, nice surprise! You surely demonstrated the benefits of trying different methods here! Hardware fished last is the proper sequence, nicely done, Barry!

      Thanks for your input, I appreciate it because I know you are way more experienced than me. If I had noticed he was bleeding, I could have cut the hook shank, but I didn’t notice it until after I removed the hook, which probably caused the bleeding. We live and learn as anglers and I will be more observant in the future about the hook location. Thank you for following along with this series, I can always count on positive and informative comments from you! You’ve been there since the beginning. 😊🎣

      @RAGEFISHING With your netting system, you'd have had much better results cutting a hook than I have had, considering that I rarely carried a net with me back then. I thought about that after reading your response. I still need to set myself up like you have done, but it'll have to wait. I've had another setback, basically I think the doctors are trying to kill me, but I refuse to play along. But the MRSA I had contracted in the hospital in August wasn't cured, I just found out. So back to the start again. No wonder I was taking so long to heal, but I digress. I showed my friend Henry your net system and he rigged his fly fishing for trout set-up that way, and he loves it, and told me to thank you. He is having a hip replacement today, so we are planning an Oregon trip for March. Tight lines, Barry!

      @williamcooke6056 Sorry to hear about the set back! MRSA is no fun, I hope you get better quick.
      Glad your friend found the net system helpful, it has worked for me after I figured out the right magnet. And having the leash makes catch and release easier.

      @@RAGEFISHINGI showed him your instructional series as well, and about how you secure your rods, etc. He's now going through your past videos, both fishing and gear related, techniques, all of it. I told him to make sure and sub you. Be cause of my issues, and now his hip replacement, we missed out on our annual Idaho Clearwater River trips together. Last year was great, although I only hooked and lost one all weekend, I got to run his boat for fishing, it was super cold so we mostly pulled plugs until mid afternoon, but backing plugs down I put him on 8 steelies, (8 on solidly), with several more takedowns. Running barbless, you lose your share, but he had his 2 best days ever on the river there. And he enjoys being able to relax and concentrate on just fishing, as his other friends don't have the boat operating skills I do. I've got a lot of years on you steelhead fishing, but you are far more organized in your gear and approach to steelhead fishing than I ever was. I've learned a great deal watching your videos, and enjoy watching you do so well at it. I also respect greatly the care you always take in handling wild fish, and the respect that you show them without fail.

    A beautiful river you're fishing in this video & I won't ask where. Spinners are always my 1st choice when bank fishing and thanks for your excellent video. Tight lines.

    Watching this as I go to fish my local steelhead river. It closes on the 1st. Hope the water looks as good as it does here.

      Good luck! That day it was low and clear for sure. And it’s rare for the Oregon Coast to get sunny days like that in the winter.

      I’m going to try my best! Always hoping for the one to put on the wall. Maybe I should just do this little guy, his enthusiasm earned it. 😁

    Honk hole. Funny I thought I was the only one that named holes. I've Owl hole, choke pt, horse crossing, winery hole, etc. I too hate to see them bleed. Take care & keep up the great videos.

      We have some good names! My favorite is the ‘GDB’ hole, it got its name after I gave John the first 5 casts in one of my favorite holes before I took a cast. Nothing for him, bobber down on my first cast. He yelled, ‘God Da$m!t Barry!’ And now it’s GDB hole. 😁 (You can see it for yourself in my old video ‘my lucky cap.’)
      As far as the bleeding fish, it truly breaks my heart when I cause a native to bleed, that little clip of me standing there is sincere, I love these fish. I’ve been very fortunate to have only had about 4 bleed like this in my entire steelhead career. I’ve had a couple that were gill hooked and probably didn’t make it. This one is an unknown, I read some steelhead mortality studies which state that not all bleeders die, I’m hoping that’s the case for this guy. I was using a small single hook that got him in the tongue, probably because he was so small. I do my best, but the only thing I could do better is not fish for them and that’s not an option.
      Thanks for the feedback and following along on this series. I appreciate it. 🎣

    What river?

    • @RAGEFISHING
      @RAGEFISHING  6 месяцев назад

      I don’t name rivers for a couple reasons, I don’t want to increase fishing pressure in one spot and I don’t want death threats from those who call the rivers home. ☠️ I can tell you there is decent steelhead fishing all down the Oregon Coast. Here’s an awesome link to an article that breaks down the Oregon Coast Steelhead Rivers.
