STEELHEAD SCOUTING TRIP PART 2 - DAYS 3 & 4 - 3 RIVERS IN 4 DAYS - Oregon Coastal Steelhead Fishing.

- I spent 4 days scouting new steelhead water on the Oregon Coast. 3 rivers in 3 days; 1 of the rivers I've fished a couple times previously, the other 2 I had never been to. The river levels were high most of the month of January, so I wasn't expecting much, but I learned a bunch and did find some success.

Smaller systems and pocket water are my favorite. Beautiful scenery here 👍 Almost time to start getting the boat out for springer trial runs.
They are hard to beat! And yes, I’m taking the boat out tomorrow for a practice run.
It's amazing how steelhead come unbuttoned! Great videos dude!
Thank you! They are scrappy! That’s why I love them. You can see its head shaking on my rod a few moments before coming unpinned. Incredible fish. 🎣
Nice fish!
Sure looked like it! 😁
That was a long day, but it sure looked like fun! Just like you, i really like streams that size. That was a nice fish, i wish it had ended up in your net! Really enjoyed this video, thanks!
Thanks William! It felt like a powerful fish. As you could see in the video, it initially ran down right in front of me and just hung out there before it decided it needed to leave me in the dust. The only relief of losing it was the pressure off my sad right arm from the tennis elbow. 😁 I’m heading into an Orthopedic Doc Monday, hopefully to get a steroid shot and set up some PT. It’s been a drag. 🎣
awesome video man some beautiful water
Thank you. It was an awesome river.
The scouting trip series has been awesome. You asked for questions so here are two: What criteria do you use to select rivers to scout and what information sources do you use to identify potential sites?
Good question Tom. I actually covered some of this in some of my initial dialogue but the footage was horrible, so maybe a follow up video is in order. Or I’ll cover it in a future scouting trip.
On this particular trip, I had heard of the larger river’s reputation over the years so I just wanted to see it. Then I simply googled the river name with ‘steelhead fishing’ and several helpful articles popped up, not only about it, but surrounding rivers. That’s how I found River #3. I also researched the old forum Ifish and found some good intel.
Next I marked all the mentioned sites from the research on my OnX App and downloaded offline maps for those areas, which allowed me to use OnX even when there was no cell service. I use the ‘Hybrid’ mode which shows Google earth and topo, mainly because that’s the mode I use while hunting.
Lastly, I check catch statistics on ODFW’s website. Even though I’m not really after hatchery fish, looking at the most recent numbers (2022 right now) you can see what rivers and months have the best returns. Of course that might also be an indication of what rivers to stay away from since the hatchery runs generally bring out the majority of fishermen.
I didn’t do it on this trip, but I’ve called the local biologist on several previous hunting trips and they were very helpful. I had enough information for this one I didn’t feel the need.
I hope this answers both questions, even though I bounced around a bit. And thanks for feedback about the trip. It was a fun one to film and edit, so much beautiful scenery. 🎣
What a beautiful river! I can completely relate to your sentiment on that steelhead. It’s such a blessing to hook one on a new river. And that looked like a tank! Great job!
Thanks Pal! We need to do these ones on a future road trip!
What a beautiful river
No kidding, a steelheader’s dream!
The color of the rivers were awesome. I was concerned about you getting out of the steep bank. I retire almost 6 yrs ago from local 12 operating engineers (heavy equipment operator). My voice mail said "this is Mike, I'm probably working, but God I hope I'm fishing". I need to come up with another saying. Love your videos. Have you considered your own guide service? Take care
It was a beautiful river for sure. I loved fishing it. I already want to go back. Thank you for the feedback and I’ve considered guiding, but I like fishing too much. Some of my buddies who are guides never get to fish much anymore by themselves, they are guiding when the fish are in. We’ll see though!
I have golfers elbow they call it opposite of tennis elbow BUT it’s on my left elbow so I do my realing with that hand and it doesn’t bother me too much lol
That’s no good! My tennis elbow is getting a little better. It was hurting me this day, not to mention the cold I was trying to get over at the same time. But there were steelhead to chase! 😁
I really enjoy the style of these videos! No unrealistic “highlight reels”
Thank you for the feedback! Comments like this make it all the effort worth it! 😊
Man that river looks amazing even if it is a little high. I need to get out and explore some new terrain.
It was incredible! I plan to go back when it’s in a little better shape. There are so many steelhead rivers yet to explore though!
@RAGEFISHING I'm fairly new to your channel and have some catching up to do on your content. Do you mainly fish Oregon?
Yes, I have dreams of some out of state adventures, but right now I mainly fish Oregon.
@@RAGEFISHING sounds like we have some of the same dreams. Lol. Look forward to seeing more of your videos. Tight lines
