Dillon RL550B rebuild project. Part 1: Introduction
I recently acquired a batch including a couple od Dillon presses and related gear. One of the presses is a much-used RL550B in desperate need of some care and refurbishmenht. I am going to tear it down, clean it up, replace parts as needed and get it back into tip-top shape. This is the first of several videos that will comprise this project.

Comparing my Redding #3 vs my RCBS Uniflow: part 3 with H110

We are comparing the precision of the Redding #3 powder measure that I got used, with my RCBS Uniflow measure. In this segment, we're using Hodgdon H110 powder. Comparing powder measure performance: Redding #3 vs RCBS Uniflow
Просмотров 29414 дней назад
Between these two powder measures, is one better than the other with precision of powder delivery. Both measures have small "pistol" size metering chambers. The Redding was something of a basket case in need of re-furb, and the RCBS was bought new but is well used. Let's cee how they compare when delivering small smokeless powder charges.

Over a period of many weeks, I compiled some loading and performance data for 9 230gn LRN cast bullets, and 4 jacketed/plated 230gn RN bullets for 45 ACP. Nice haul, I had a Dillon RL550c, it was a great press once you got everything dialed in, just to many moving parts for my taste, so i sold it and purchased a Redding T7 which is more my style. Since I don`t shoot competition, I don`t need to put out 100`s of rounds an hour.
Too bad the priming system is missing . Dillon parts aren't cheap .
@@jamespollard1670 yep. The “base press” was cheap enough. I knew I’d have to throw some money at it. Thanks for stopping by, James. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

Hi Dragon! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
@@viejo2a hello there
What would you need for the strong mount and the square d press
I will give you credit for saving this gear, it would be a shame to see it put back in to "storage" or worse. I would have personally passed regardless of price; I will never get enough use from it to justify any investment at this stage of life. I look forward to the rebuild!
Hiya, Scholar. Projects like this often cost money. Personally, though, I’m not into the passtime for economy. For me it’s just a hobby so I don’t really count the cost. If I decide that I don’t want it, I can easily sell it fir more than I have in it. 😃
Nice stuff and that should be a fun project 👊🇺🇸

If you're looking to get rid of that Square Deal B press I would be interested. I already have one I'd like to set up a large primer one with small primer
Hi Eric. That may happen. I want to get into it and clean it up first and see what it needs. Shoot me an email (in the ‘about section’) and I’ll keep you informed.
Does anyone know if you can fanfire it?
@@jakepeters6197 i never tried it! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
@@viejo2a Alright thanks for the reply the reason i ask is because I'm pretty sure i broke my crosman fortify by fan firing it or it was a defect. i was thinking of buying the 1875 so i could fan fire.
@@jakepeters6197 I don’t know if the 1875 would stand up to it for very long. Most of those parts are just cast, not very strong. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
@@viejo2a damn do you know of one that is able to fanfire
So I wonder how much would vary on a digital scale vs the beam scale in general i think probably be close enough shouldn't cause any issues just interesting to see the variation of each drop ..... good ol SD
@@ThecrazyScotsman well..tough to resolve that one. Since the digital scale will tell us whether a delivered charge is within the limits of precision designed into the unit, usually +/- 0.1 grain with our class of gear, we would assume that the digital unit would result in a higher percentage of correct charges. That is, if we are willing to accept that spread. The fly in the ointment is that even though the readout SAYS 10.0 grains, how do you know that is accurate, i.e. really 10.0 grains and not 10.1 or 9.8. You can confirm one charge with check weights, but the reliability of the strain gauge is generally unknown to us. I think that the most precise technique for those of us that use standard reloading type of equipment would be to properly use a beam scale and trickler. To save time, (the biggest advantage to a digital unit IMHO), one can throw and then trickle up.
Good detailed breakdown
Thank you, my friend. I hope you are feeling ok! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
Great video loved it
@@timohyburkett614 thanks, Tim. Good to hear from you! 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
I like my Redding 3BR, I can only compare it to the Hornady I used before though. The Redding gives much more consistant throws, but I still check at every 10th throw, it's just a good habit and I always have my trickler handy just in case. I've never had a problem yet. Great content as usual Walter, thanks.

Very good stuff. That H110 can really be a pain to deal with. Looked like both PMs did well. This powder is really prone to static cling depending on the weather.

I would say the new RCBS Uniflow ( aka current model ) with the ability to be case activated is my preferred choice. You can use it in so many ways on or off different types presses.

Walter, I like how you are brining to light how if your are spending 85% to gain 15% you should look at what you get for the 85% of expense. there is another thing to balance, what are your overall needs? and can you just throw light and trickle up to the weight you need?.. anyway, as you put it, it is a personal choice in the way of equipment. peace - Dave
@@thorsaxe5881 yep. The trickle-up technique works well in the situation where you want the better precision of the beam balance, but need a little more speed in getting right to the desired charge. It’s especially helpful with powders that don’t meter as well as others. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
