The sample size, number of readings taken, has a lot to do with the accuracy ( meaning ) of the Standard Deviation calculated. To get a statistically significant value you would need to test more than is realistic for a Citizen Scientist. What this means is if you shoot 29,000 rounds your standard deviation will be different. To offset this over a small sample size is to toss out the measurements that are outliers.
The short distances pistols are used at means that variations in velocity (standard deviation) don't have enough flight time to cause much variation in point of impact. As you say, other factors may have a stronger influence on "short range" accuracy than variations in velocity does.
💯percent agree. While SD can be an indication of powder charge/bullet performance, it says very little regarding accuracy at relatively short distances. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
