    I think you will find that the drum holes on the RCBS handle side match up with the linkage for their progressive presses whereas Redding does not have the same allowance. Hornady has a almost identical system for their powder measure. Great job Walter! I look forward to your "This old reloading press", as I have a Pacific press with shell holder and ram as one piece plus two cigar boxes full of extra rams for different case rims that needs TLC. The Redding gives much more consistant throws, but I still check at every 10th throw, it's just a good habit and I always have my trickler handy just in case. I've never had a problem yet. Walter, I like how you are brining to light how if your are spending 85% to gain 15% you should look at what you get for the 85% of expense. there is another thing to balance, what are your overall needs? and can you just throw light and trickle up to the weight you need?.. anyway, as you put it, it is a personal choice in the way of equipment. peace - Dave

    • @viejo2a
      @viejo2a  Месяц назад +1

      @@thorsaxe5881 yep. The trickle-up technique works well in the situation where you want the better precision of the beam balance, but need a little more speed in getting right to the desired charge. It’s especially helpful with powders that don’t meter as well as others. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

  • @hercules1073
    @hercules1073 Месяц назад +1

    I tried 2200 in my uniflow for the first time last week and found that I had to practice a different method of throwing than what I use for flake and short stick powders. I was getting three tenths off every other throw. I might try the #55 with it as I doubt my Herter's will be any different, but it does have a smaller metering chamber than the uniflow so it may do better.

    • @hercules1073
      @hercules1073 17 дней назад

      @@viejo2a I've had several over the years going back to the old all iron hopper original fives. I just took a new #55 apart that I've had for several years and never really used and It's easy to see why they discontinued it. I don't know how they sold it for the price they did! besides the three slide system it offers the casting itself has a knife edge machined the width of the metering cylinder. The older units have the steel cylinder marked in blackpowder drams and grains while the brass top slide is marked in reference lines and numbers. I still prefer the simple drums like the Uniflow, but I like the different mounting options and the ease of moving the 55 from die to die or stand by leaving the drop tube screwed into the stand or die and just loosening the thumb screw to transfer it and of course it will throw from very small to very large charges without needing to change a drum, but like anything else it does have powder preferences.

  • @ThecrazyScotsman
    @ThecrazyScotsman Месяц назад +1

    So I wonder how much would vary on a digital scale vs the beam scale in general i think probably be close enough shouldn't cause any issues just interesting to see the variation of each drop ..... good ol SD

    • @viejo2a
      @viejo2a  Месяц назад

      @@ThecrazyScotsman well..tough to resolve that one. Since the digital scale will tell us whether a delivered charge is within the limits of precision designed into the unit, usually +/- 0.1 grain with our class of gear, we would assume that the digital unit would result in a higher percentage of correct charges. That is, if we are willing to accept that spread. The fly in the ointment is that even though the readout SAYS 10.0 grains, how do you know that is accurate, i.e. really 10.0 grains and not 10.1 or 9.8. You can confirm one charge with check weights, but the reliability of the strain gauge is generally unknown to us. I think that the most precise technique for those of us that use standard reloading type of equipment would be to properly use a beam scale and trickler. To save time, (the biggest advantage to a digital unit IMHO), one can throw and then trickle up.
