SUP Surfing a 9'6 x 34 in OH surf
Just before I fled to Florida for the winter, I surfed with a full 5mm suit for the first time in years, so the big board got the nod.

2 good dawn patrol sessions on my new Sunova model "Ghost" After testing this one, I got together with Bert Burger at Sunova to tweak it here and there to maximize its performance and usability. My new version should be here by early August for testing.... I anticipate that I'll approve the updated version for production. I will do a full review after I get some video of #2 So many cool details...

Thanks so much for posting this video. Just chock full or information for helping old timers like me to get out there, negate the naysayers and have some fun in the surf.
Hey Rick love all your videos you're awesome and an inspiration! I'm getting ready to get a hard shell board, been using an inflatable but transitioning to a hardshell mainly for sup surfing... Any recommendations?
Thanks White Flag! Lots of options, but lots of info needed for recommendations If you want to discuss, please email me at supthecreek@gmail.com
great work!!
Love that turn at the 3:16 mark
Kia! It’s Julianna…you inspire me!
Awesome Julianna, great talking with you this evening.... maybe someday we meet up for a flatwater paddle session!
I still cant get over how good the surf gets up your way Rick. I haven't seen a "clean" glassy wave here in Panama City Beach in months.
Hi Hr I hear that! Thanks for watching 🙂 I am so stoked to get back to Cape Cod and good sandbars after a long winter in Florida!
You rock! So inspriring. What is the back ground music 1:07? 😃
Thanks Christian... but I am sorry, the external hard drive with all the video from 2022 failed and I can't access the video to check the music used. I belong to the music service "Artlist" which is mostly unsigned artists.
Hi. Rick, Your are my role model. I am going to SUP surf soon. What is the BGM 8:18 ? - from Melbourne OZ-
Thanks Christian, and Good on ya, get on board! Too much fun ☺ Not sure what you mean by BGM (big gray mass?) I didn't see anything at 8:18, unless you mean BigFoot down the beach? 🤗
Another good one Rick !
You are having a RUclips morning Todd! Thanks again.... hopefully we'll run into one another again some day!
@@rickweeks I'd enjoy joining you for a chat one day soon. Living inland since 1990 I rarely get to the beach. My 7+ surfboards are so dusty from hanging from the basement ceiling. I surf vicariously through you. Thank you my friend.
@@toddcwalker4208 Any time you are near the Cape, please let me know, and I'll reach out if I go North (I believe you live up there somewhere!)
@@rickweeks I've been in Frederick MD (45 miles NW of DC) since 1990. I get to the Cape about once a year to visit my younger brother. I occasionally get down to FL to visit Robin Fleming and Cleve Bigelow.
@@toddcwalker4208 ha ha, guess I am out of touch, I thought you were in Maine. I talk to Robin on occasion and Cleve.
Looking good Rick !
Hi Todd! Thank you my friend, I hope you are well and serenading your world!

Thanks Max, glad you liked it!
Thank you for the amazing video again. I am looking for an 8'10 in Australia but impossible to find unfortunately.
Hi Aussiert... thanks for your comment! All Ghosts at the moment have to be ordered at your nearest Sunova Retailer or online at the Sunova Website. Where are you located, I will answer with the nearest shop to contact. Shops should begetting some stock soon, but being a new model, the production has to catch up with demand.
@@rickweeks Thanks Rick, I am in Sydney.
@@rickweeks Another quick question, does this board come with fins? Thanks again

Here in Kiama, NSW now and will have to look for a Sunova. I haven’t surfed in 20 years but I know I can SUPPORT because for 30+ years I surfed whenever it was good on Cape Cod, up and down the east coast from the Cape to the other great Cape, Hatteras, (went to college in the late 60s & early 70s in North Carolina and hung out from Nags Head, Hatteras, Okracoke, and on into Florida, Daytona, Cocoa, etc. Moved to CA in ‘73 with surf bros and after 50+ years there my wife and I moved here where the Aussie born grandkids are and I thank the Great Spirit I’m still here alive and living in paradise, although it’s been raining for a week. Oh yeah, Sunova! Forgot wha5 were talking about! 75 later this year. I’m 6’ and 220 ,your size, so I’m looking for your 9’6 ‘cause my balance isn’t what it used to be. Love your vids bro! Rock on!

Any tips for a 60 year young gal trying to SUP surf for the first time this summer?
Hi Sandy First off, you are going to be so stoked once you get past the learning curve.... SUP surfing opens up an amazing world that isn't obvious to an observer. Information or tips would vary dramatically depending if you are coming from a surf background or starting from scratch. If you are an experienced paddler or if you have never paddled a standup before. I have consulted with newbie SUP surfers and experts for the past 10 years. No fees, I just like helping people find their space in the SUP world. If you would like specific advice, tailored to your experience (or lack of) please email me because the transfer of information and links is possible through email. supthecreek@gmail.com I guess I really should make a video geared towards entry leven SUP surfing and all the variables that help the process. SUP surfing changed my life at 62, when I transitioned from a lifetime of regular surfing to SUP. Absolutely amazing!
You sure fall a lot
Thank you... yup. and proud of it 🤣

Way to go Rick. Awesome. You are an inspiration to all water people. You are giving me hope
Thanks Yair, I am glad you enjoy them!
Where I live we have very small waves (English channel). I have an inflatable surf sup (itiwit 10' 31") plenty of times I'd paddle hard for a small wave and it doesn't take me anywhere (otherwise board is excellent and surfable on any small to medium size formed wave) What would be the best board for catching the smallest of waves with least effort?
Grande Ricardo!!!! Seguí así!!
Gracias Leonardo, lo intentaré!
What type FIN is used on a 14 footer in these conditions???
9” fiberglass fin with a rather long sweep
@rickweeks Is that a shark at 3:28???😮
Where are these waves? Willing to jump into the sea!

Hi John, thank you... I will keep the peddle to the metal!

Thanks Rick for the advice! I’ll for sure try it next time. ¡Saludos desde México!
Gracias fercam, agradezco tus comentarios!
I'd love to see a video of you comparing a Creek to the Ghost of similar sizes. How do they feel? What design elements cause those differences? When would you choose to ride one over the other? Or is the Ghost a quiver killer?
Thanks Derek, great question! The quick and dirty answer is: Ghost is a quiver killer in most situations for most people, but then I felt the same about my 9'4 Creek. They are truly VERY different and I always chose the Ghost now. If I was traveling to Indonesia to ride steep reef barrels with size, I would definitely take the Creek, it handles size and juice really well, it fast and carves like it's on rails. The Ghost takes all I learned from so many great boards ( Creek, Sp25, Flow V2, Kanga & Placid) and adds a new dimension with the combination of easy width and fins forward. The Ghost is a new performance experience that never has let me down in any situation yet. I try to never compare different models head to head because one would usually have to be the "Winner" Truth is, each board has a niche it fits in and is always perfect for someone. I don't feel as though my opinion of one over the other would necessarily be consistent with another SUPsters reality.... so I avoid the head to head comps.
This is Ohio?
Sorry for the confusion... it is Cape Cod OH = "overhead" in surf lingo.
Wow, what a PERRRRFECT DAY!!!! I REMEMBER WHEN.......zeni
Zeni??? really? So cool if it is you! Awesome to hear from you! The Cape has had some great breaks for a long time now!
@@rickweeks I always hated surfing with a wet suit....
Great video Rick looks a bit cold with all that rubber on.
ha ha... true that Beav, I left for Florida a week later!!!! Actually, I like the cold.... I just can't surf most boards in a Full 5mm Suit. The 9'6 Ghost, 9'6 Kanga and Pointbreak are all fun in full rubber... but I'm ok with warm winters these days 😊
Yew! Quabba fins?
Thanks Rick, and you are correct.... Quobba Mixed Thruster set (large sides, Medium center) Worked a charm on the larger waves Normal waves I prefer going HO Stevie Quad set (4.7" sides - 3.6" rears) because they loosen up the big board a lot in low power waves.
What a lovely wave that was..amazing how a 34" wide board can have this level of control on a wave..
Hi AP, thank you! I hope all is well in your world these days! Yes... I was super stoked that the big Ghost was so much fun in some juice!!
What a great day out there. Super fun looking waves 🌊. You are an inspiration Rick. Always look forward to seeing your videos 🤙
Thanks Lepps... I greatly appreciate your support and very glad you liked this video! I love the waves at my home break and miss them terribly while basking in the Florida sun.... gives me something to look forward to every May!
Rick, you got a tough back ! Im 41 yo and have always pain after session
Thanks, but not to worry.... my back hurts when I do the dishes 🤣 but oddly enough, it's pretty durable while surfing. The walk van to beach and back carrying board and camera gear takes a toll after a long session. That session was easy.... only had the Kook Hat Cam so no SoloShot to carry!
3:28 anyone see a shark pop up?
I love your videos! All best from Germany’s Baltic Sea.
Thanks Funktv... your support is very much appreciated!!
Awesome stuff! 🤙🤙 I clicked on every ad I could!
Thanks SFS! ha ha... I appreciate that, but I haven't monetized my channel yet. I really need to do that!
Sir, your feet movement are amazing. I'm a regular too, but my backside is terrible. Your video gave me some tips about it. Aloha!
Thanks Guilherme, I am happy that you got something out of it! Keep working on that backside.... SUP is basically made for backside surfing because the heels transfer so much solid leverage to the rail!
Creek, surfed with you @H Tower a couple weeks ago. I’d watched your videos previously. But I didn’t realize who you were or that you were in the FL. You swapped out SUPs. Hope to see ya out while ya down! Shaka, E
Hi Eric, Thanks for reaching out! I have been racing up and down the coast chasing waves. Based out of Palm Bay in the winter, spring ha ha... too bad I can't edit my sessions like I edit my videos, I'd be a lot better!! 🤣 If you ever want meet up for a session or to see some Sunova's even out of curiosity, I'd be happy to let you jump on some. Please email me at supthecreek@gmail.com
Where is this at?
Treasure Coast, Florida
Good vid. The kick through or the dive over method have served me well as I progress, but as my balance and comfort levels have shot up, I’ve started staying on my feet & board through most sets. Skootch the board forward, hyper bend the knees and dig the paddle in and pull. How’s a bout video on that? I’d love to see some footage in how others are staying g in their feet in nasty beach breaks. Keep up the SUP Rick!
Thanks JC, yes, it is a very useful skill to develop! Exactly! At 8:02, I have a clip showing paddling over the top as a wave breaks, with discussion. The more comfortable you get with breaking waves, the more you realize how to stay upright as the wave breaks. Keep pushing your limits and comfort level in the impact zone!

Hey Rick, did you Surf High Tower a couple days ago? I think I was surfing with you. You changed out a longboard style SUP. Anyway, when I realized I’ve watched your videos I wanted to say. Hello
Hi Eric! Yes... my first session on a longboard SUP in years, but changed to my Ghost cuz I wasn't feeling the longboard on those waves. You were riding an Infinity B-line I think? I got some fleeting vids of you with my SoloShot! Thanks for reaching out.... I appreciate that! I have been surfing the entire Space Coast this week looking for wind/tide/swell spots. See you out there!!
Creek -- this is is some of the best surfing footage I've seen you do. Incredible how well this board performs across the dramatically different sizes and widths, and across smaller and larger waves. Well done!
Thanks Daniel, your comment is much appreciated my friend! It's a very sweet board in everything so far!
Love it Rick keeping the sup surf stoke alive 🤙
Thanks Chris, there is a lot of SUP surf stoke everywhere I look these days.... it is just so awesome, it keeps me smiling all the time!
