Charles Francis Colcord Meets Billy the Kid
Просмотров 584Месяц назад
This is an abridged reading (by Cardigan Kid) of Charles Francis Colcord's account of meeting Billy the Kid. Nothing was omitted or altered with the intention of changing the narrative itself. Regulators John Middleton and Henry Brown later drifted into Colcord's camp. Middleton ended up marrying Colcord's sister (she later divorced him). Colcord was not a fan of John Middleton at all, and his ...

How epic would it be living there? I can't imagine. Great show!
I'm struck by the mention of a following letter he intended to send within a fortnight. He lived another two months and yet never finished the next one? One wonders if it was partly written as he suggests, and may have been among his belongings. Perhaps it's lost to history or he never actually put his intended words to paper. Still, a young man full of life, if perhaps highly ambitious in his expectations for profit, had his chance to make a greater mark on history taken away. And, to change the direction of several others under his influence. What might Billy Bonney have become had John and Alex lived?
I've had copies of his letters for about 3 years. I've always assumed he meant the letter dated November 29, 1877- just one week before this one. That letter is very long.
@@BBFtB Thanks, Ben, that makes sense. It was already in process, hence the earlier date, even if mailed after the short December 6 "scrap."
You can’t hear this without instantly thinking about what was to come and the brutality that ended this man’s life. RIP John H Tunstall
Oh, the hubris
Poignant letter. RIP John 🌹
Poor guy, had no idea what he was getting into in Lincoln County. Probably wished he set up in California as he originally planned.
At the beginning of Bob Boze Bell's book, he talks about the Utica, NY confluence of names: Catherine McCarty working as a governess - potentially her in-laws looking after a young William McCarty, two young Bonney boys, and a Harvey Edmonds all living within a few blocks of each other - and then in Santa Fe - who was a witness to the wedding? Someone named Harvey Edmonds. I don't believe Josie was younger than Billy based on Josie working at a saloon / gambling hall right after Catherine died and their size difference as kids (Josie sitting with the big kids at school and Billy up front with the little ones). I wouldn't be surprised if Josie is Michael's kid, Michael gets killed the the NYC riots, Michael's brother takes them in, in Utica. Catherine gets a job and meets the Bonney boys and one of them is Billy's father. Harvey Edmonds may have been associated with Catherine's employer and he might be the same Harvey Edmonds who was the witness to the wedding in Santa Fe. All speculation of course, but from personal experience and family history, the common migration pattern was NYC, up the Hudson river, then across with the railroad and Erie Canal: Albany, Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo. When people from Central and Western NY are in another state and someone asks where we are from, we answer New York, since no one will know the names of NY small towns or confuse duplicate city names with other states. If you've driven across NY state, you'll know that 95% of NY is farms, forests, lakes and mountains. NYC is waaaay down in the southeast corner. When we are referring to NYC we say New York City. People from NYC also say they are from New York (meaning New York City, but in their NYC-centric worldview, it sounds preposterous to say New York City) unless they are talking to a local and then they say which borough they are from (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, etc.). So, if Billy was a toddler and young kid in Utica and someone asked where he was born, whether it was Utica or NYC, he would have answered simply, New York.
You're so right about this show getting people "into" Billy the Kid. Since I've watched it, I'm constantly reading and watching docs, and I know that my husband is TIRED of me talking about him all the time.
I think the Tunstall grave is most likely currently partially under a shed on private property on the house next door to the Tunstall store.
Such great insight into Doc's/Joe's life and times. Could def be a multi-parter. Thanks David and James.
Vietnam era westerns can walk a line. They are often darker and make villains out of law enforcement. This one tries to balance elements of youth culture with Leone's influence, while keeping it palatable for fans of Sonny and Cher. The Criterion print probably looks amazing.
Stockholm syndrome is the term you are looking for
Powerful stuff.
💗💗💗
All those scrapes that the Kid made it through...a split seconds hesitation and this time in a game of two, Billy didn't get there first. Well done Doss
Another year come this Sunday. RIP Kid. Nicely done Ben 🙏
So they can make a full restored theatrical release of this but not the original Star Wars 🤔
It's a conspiracy.
Maybe our next idiot, I mean President can release them for me in the coming years
some nut ask his grgrand ....
One of my favorite Westerns. It gets better the more you watch it. Best soundtrack ever for a Western. Bo Hopkins was who Peckinpah wanted to play Billy but the producers wanted Kris. Still a very underrated film.
Showing my age here, but I could not wait for this film to hit the theaters back in 1973. There had not been a new Kid movie in my lifetime up to 1973. I was extremely disappointed with my first viewing of the film. It didn't make sense to me that the Stinking Springs shootout would happen just minutes into the film. However, as years went by, I have fallen in love with this film. The last Peckinpah western made. Finding a good quality print of this film have been impossible. There'd only been a DVD version and the transfer was horrible. I'm a bit more picky on watching my films than you are, James. You have the advantage by not having to spend as much money on movies. 😁 Ironically, just last year, I watched this film for the first time in ages on the one DVD copy I had, but I could barely finish watching. The film transfer was trashy, and the sound mushy. When I found out that Criterion would release this film, I looked forward to this release as much as the theater. I did get the 4K copy, and it does come in four discs. The transfer is stunningly beautiful. Criterion is the absolute best film-to-DVD production companies. Criterion is the creator of "extra features". No company produced special features until Criterion came along. You'll notice that in the quality of the supplemental material. I was looking forward to the feature about the soundtrack. To this day. Dylan's soundtrack of this film is my favorite of all Dylan albums. Enjoy the show!
Well said!! I'm glad to hear Criterion did a good job on this!
The Kid is the best when it comes to historical accuracy. The effort made with such a low budget is very commendable.
Brilliant images and music. Brilliantly narrated. I think that's pretty much how it went down, I believe he was completely surprised and caught off guard ❤
Nicely done, Ben. While some will always doubt the story as Pat Garrett and John Poe tell it, I think that it is entirely plausible that Billy's death went down exactly this way. One need not believe it, but it's hard to argue that this is not a credible scenario.
Well, I've never seen this, in any version. But after Billy the Kid versus Dracula, I think I can handle any BTK film.
A++
I never cared for this movie but I ordered this & gave it another try yesterday. I still don’t think much of it. My biggest problem is the portrayal of both Pat Garrett and John Poe. I understand they we’re trying to build up Billy, but they made Pat a whore beating monster, and Poe was a total thug. It just doesn’t sit right with me that these men were real, and this portrayal was just awful and from everything I understand completely untrue of either man.
Really hits home, the graphics & music! The last image... 😢 Thanks Ben.
Hope you enjoy this! It's a cinematic masterpiece! No matter the ages of the cast, because let's be honest YG 1&2 weren't 💯% accurate either. 🤠
Ooh! Love this film, even though it’s not great as a ‘Billy’ film.
Not the best BTK movie, but probably the best Pat Garrett movie! Kristopherson's age really messes things up, but Coburn is great as Garrett. It is a great western and there's a lot of themes going on. Some of the scenes, like Slim Pickens death shot, are incredible.
What's your thoughts on Patrick McCarty's middle name being Michael or even a nickname?
@@NewMexicoCountrySongs no t everyone has a middle name .
@@PaulShaw-ex7ri yeah i know, im speculating but thanks
Agreed. Not one of my favourite’s either but loved the music. Speak of music when are we going to get to hear a Cardi K riff on the guitar?🎸
looking good ,Youre Getting that wild hair under control Hoss , we need to come out with a mens hair care line called THE LION TAMER !
I'm gonna need some of that mane-taming too, Paul.
Is it possible, Patrick McCarty's middle name was Michael?
Yes, totally possible!
The Kid is also my favorite Billy the Kid film (Historically speaking), huge Dane Dehaan fan. Now fictional would be One-Eyed Jacks
Did he ever speak of Billy later in life? Doesn’t seem to be a lot out there on that topic.
Billy was just a teen trying to survive in a mafia style county! Took revenge for the only person who ever treated him right and gave him a chance!
Lived in Mabank for a while. The oilfielld was what became the Waggoneer Ranch near Electra.
Another great show. I have his book and look fwd to the updated version.. . Th G is silent in Gila so is the j in jose pronounced as hosay spanish is like that..

Art was a great guest! 🤠🤠🤠
Very interesting David and James. Thanks a lot.

I think he just went to medical school for a time. I'll clarify.
