  • This is an abridged reading (by Cardigan Kid) of Charles Francis Colcord's account of meeting Billy the Kid. Nothing was omitted or altered with the intention of changing the narrative itself.
Regulators John Middleton and Henry Brown later drifted into Colcord's camp. Middleton ended up marrying Colcord's sister (she later divorced him). Colcord was not a fan of John Middleton at all, and his early drafts of his autobiography include more information on his experience with Middleton than his final copy does.
    Read about Colcord here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles...
His autobiography, simply titled "The Autobiography of Charles Francis Colcord," is available at various booksellers online. My copy was around $50, so it certainly ain't cheap.
It is our hope that these "History on Tape" videos will merely serve as a catalyst for your interest, and encourage you to seek out the original source documentation and study them for yourself!

My family is visiting and staying at a timeshare. I met a couple at the rec center, and wouldn't you know it, they lived in Roswell. Had a good chat about aliens and Billy The Kid. They seemed to enjoy talking about it.

Cool bit, James. Love the idea of Billy in Dodge. Of course, Pat in buckskin is pretty bad ass, too.

Billy who? I want to hear about John Middleton, doggonit! Well, never mind. Thanks for sharing the tale. I'm not quite sure what to think of it, as these recollections often seem to be colored by the Kid's exaggerated reputation late in his career, and after his death. But there is a definite consistency about the physical description of many who encountered him. It's as if there is this element of surprise that this almost waif of a kid could be behind the massive trail of destruction attributed to him. Imagine that!

So, I've been researching John Middleton for almost 2 years. I try to keep all that I've learned about him off of Facebook because I plan on putting it into book form.

@@BBFtB That's a very good plan. No reason to publish a book after the hard work of research is all over the Internet already. I promise I will buy the book, though!

My first mental image after hearing that description is of Cleavon Little as Sheriff Bart, riding into Rock Ridge in Blazing Saddles...
