Majora's Mask Celebrates Human Life | Reflection

Time, death, hope, and pain. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask boldly plunges the depths of human existence in a way that's unrivaled to this day. It might be a sequel, but in many ways, its legacy transcends the Zelda name and places it among the most unique, meaningful experiences in gaming. 🎮🎨 Check out Project Restoration! Mario Kart 64 Cemented the Series' Identity | Reflection

Mario Kart 64 is perhaps the most important title in the series. This sequel streamlined the classic yet primitive design elements of its predecessor to give fans an iconic series identity that has remained largely untouched for the past 30 years. Its mechanics and courses may be dated, but Mario Kart 64 remains the blueprint for Nintendo's most successful party franchise. 🎮🎨 *Mario Kart 64 mul...

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has been called one of the greatest games ever made, but does it deserve all the praise it receives? For my money, it most certainly does. Im sorry that the algorithm has not been kind to you. I think your video is pretty good! It makes me want to dust off Dragon Quest again
Miss your content, man!
Thanks, me too! Life has been a lot busier this year, so I haven’t had as much time to dedicate to the channel. I’m starting to wrap things up on the next video though, so my goal is to release it later this month!
I'm curious to know if you ever played Chrono Trigger ? Since I loved your take on the Dragon Quest games, I would love to know your thoughts about it
So glad you’ve been enjoying the channel! Sadly, I haven’t yet experienced Chrono Trigger, but it’s on my list to tackle soon!! Would you recommend playing the SNES or DS version?
@GamesAreCreative honestly on the Ds, they added a lot of futures, but the original is great as well, and I own it on the Ps1 it's probably my favorite game ever
500 subs you say? :)
Crazy to see how it’s grown since then!
When you mentioned all the locations Mario Kart 64 ended up in, the place I find most synonymous w/ it was Best Buy. This was back when they cobbled together a bunch of screens into a giant super TV you could see from the entrance. The sides of it were surrounded by a giant Mario & Sonic in their typical promo material poses. The central pole it was on had a SNES w/ Yoshi's Island on one side and Game Boy on the other (Virtual Boy briefly in '95/'96), but front and center displaying on the giant screen was an N64, 4 controllers and a copy of this game. Wario Stadium was a common sight walking into the store throughout '97. Banjo-Kazooie & Star Wars Episode 1 Racer were later featured on it. Given how much the store scaled back its games area going into Gen 6, that was a remarkable thing to encounter. The only thing that came close was singing on their Wii copy of Beatles Rock Band (not the demo so almost all of the songs were available).
Man, what a throwback! If I had a nickel for every time I BEGGED my mom to take me to Best Buy, just so I could play the demos they had… For me, MK64 always makes me think of my orthodontist’s office! 😂 He always had a 64 with this game and a PS1 with Frogger, so it was an easy choice. Haha great memories!
Really reminds me of octopath traveler
I relate to hero 3 the most a caring mother left alone to take care of his dads abcense for doing a better good for the world and family and then finish what his dad couldnt big shoes to fill daunting but i can still pull trough thanks to God aid and his guidence i can still fulfill my purpose in life asigned for me
The dificulty could have been fixed in the new versions yet they never did it lol
Wanna see a jrpg without grinding and levels let me introduce you romancing saga and still the most dificult jrpg i played lol
Dragon quest 4 had a better sephiroth oh wait it was the OG final fantasy got inspired to make their own version of it and nobody ever talks about that but besides that your narration was wonderful i enjoyed how i felt like i was watching those oficial videos being told in Nintendo sony microsoft precentations back in the day with light humor hear in their noicely done got a sub from me
So wait chapter 1 is DQ1 and chapter 2 is DQ 2 i love it
I’ve just finished playing dq on gbc and I’m about to start dq2. Didn’t get into the series until dq8 but I’ve enjoying going back and seeing where it all started.
That’s so awesome! I’m relatively new to the series, as well, and it’s been so cool seeing how DQ’s influence has bled into so many RPG’s I’ve grown up loving. Hope you enjoyed the video!
This video feels like a video that would have a lot more views than it does, so great job on this. As someone who's favorite game ever is this game; this game's world building is really top tier. There's so many little things in this game that I can't get enough of, so many different background characters going through their own stories, or every level serving a real purpose for the tropical island vacation setting. I don't know if you're aware of mods for this game at all, but a really big one is coming out in a few weeks, Super Mario Eclipse. I'm bringing that up because it seems to be maintaining the world building from the original game really well from what I've seen.
Thanks Brendan! That means a lot. Glad you enjoyed the video! And yes, I have heard of Eclipse, although I haven’t played it yet! Looks awesome, though. I want to check it out soon!
The fact that Dragon Quest never took off in the west like how it did in Japan proves to me that Americans have no taste. Hell, I'm not much better either. I slept on this series for years and only ever barely touched the first game. Then I tried 11 and realized just what I was missing out on. Now I prefer Dragon Quest wayyy more than other similar RPGs like Final Fantasy, and to this day I'm still kicking myself for sleeping on it. Now I've beaten 1, 2, 3, 11S, and 8. Now I'm playing through 8's postgame, 5, and later 9 as I wait for 3 HD-2D. This series it peak, and God bless Akira Toriyama's soul.
Sorry for the late response, but thanks so much for sharing! I totally agree; Dragon Quest has been slept on for too long here in the west, and I’m guilty of that, too! My journey with the series has looked pretty similar to yours, and I find myself now wondering why it took me so long! There’s this whimsical simplicity about the games that is so refreshing considering how bloated and self-serious so many modern RPG’s can be. I love it. Can’t wait for HD-2D!!!
@@GamesAreCreative the main thing that makes dragon quest better than final fantasy is final fantasy always wants to change a battle system that didnt need to be changed that much, force dumb gimmicks on the player, and force a dumb minigame on the player every other battle. dragon quest is the super mario of RPGs. final fantasy is the sonic the hedgehog of RPGs.
@OmegaChase1002 haha that’s fair! I honestly love both, but I do agree that, for everything I love about FF, it can feel a bit exhausting to always learn these new systems, whereas DQ feels like slipping on a comfortable, familiar pair of shoes. I do appreciate the innovative spirit of the FF series, but DQ also just knows what works and leans into that! Love it!
@@OmegaChase1002 to me the biggest difference is Dragon Quest's focus on having interesting and unique towns, dungeons, and continents to explore. Secrets in dragon quest do not rely on walking into invisible walls or entering a random tile on the overworld screen. Instead they rely on exploration, observation of the environment, and talking to people to get clues. Dragon Quest also has a sense of "chill" that Final Fantasy doesnt. I love walking around towns, talking to people, and exploring the overworld. I love seeing the cool/cute designs of the enemies and gambling in the casinos. Final Fantasy is so focused on the dramatic elements of its stories and trying to create a seemingly complex battle system that it loses sight of everything in-between. Dragon Quest is absolutely Super Mario. Final Fantasy is absolutely Sonic the Hedgehog.
Man, these videos are all so well done! Great work dude! Which Dragon Quests have you all played now?
Appreciate you! I’ve made it through VI at this point but have gotten sidetracked on other things a bit. Absolutely loving the journey though, and planning on covering V for the channel soon!
I absolutely LOVED this! More people need to see this video! A perfect mostly spoiler-free review of one of my favorite games of all time! Been playing DQ4 since elementary school on the NES and it’s been a Top 2 game for me ever since.
Thank you so much! That means a lot. I only got into the series a few years ago, and while I really enjoyed 3, 4 was on another level. Glad you enjoyed the video! What’s your other Top 2 game?
@@GamesAreCreative Dragon Quest XI haha!
@dukey03 that’s awesome! I haven’t gotten to XI yet but it’s definitely on my list. Looks incredible!
I played the Switch versions of DQ I-III and I have to say that I love the art style. I mean, I know what everyone says, but if you think about it, Toriyama came to design the monsters and because of hardware limitations they had to be in pixel art on NES, and then SNES. People bash these ports because they’re not pixelated art, but I disagree as these ports have the original Toriyama art right into the game, and I think that’s beautiful.
Yeah I hear ya! I played em all on Switch, too, and while I and II did feel a little rough around the edges visually, I actually thought III looked amazing, as well. I also loved seeing those Toriyama designs in all their glory! So stoked for the HD-2D remake when it EVENTUALLY comes out. 😂
Great video! I loved IV, with the emotional opening and that ending that makes you drop a tear. I was so hyped after finishing this DS version and when I got to play V, I couldn’t believe it was even better. Hoping for their re-remakes for Switch 2 :)))
Thanks so much, Emmanuel! I couldn’t agree more; IV and V were such special experiences that remind me of the unique power video game experiences can have. The way both games immerse you in these relatable, down-to-earth experiences while also facing you with crazy, outlandish adventures is just amazing. I experienced both on DS, too, and would be stoked for a re-release on console! Glad you enjoyed the video! Planning to tackle V in a video real soon!
I REALLY need to go back replay this one, thanks for the video
Of course! Glad you enjoyed it! I had a great time returning to Sunshine. Let me know how the replay goes when you return to it!
I finally understood this game when I was working for an ungrateful employer as a team lead. The first scene reminded me of heading to a staffing agency to recruit temps to help me deal with Archfiend Baramos.
Haha that’s funny! I can relate; who among us hasn’t had a boss that’s reminded them of a supervillain?
This franchise has great replay value. Rather than bombard the audience with gimmicks and DLC, Enix gives us a simple set of tales in which the player uses his imagination to play the game. I first played it and was annihilated in 1990. The mobile app was a great way for me to rediscover the game and my own imagination.
Thanks for sharing! I agree; the simplicity of DQ feels so refreshing when every game now feels bloated with too much content. Love the confidence of the devs to give just the right amount of content to players!
The people are clamoring for you to play Outer Wilds
I know. The demand is reaching a fever pitch. I’ll grab it on Switch soon and exclusively capture all my footage on that version.
Fantastic video! World building is one of my favorite aspects of games. With books you're limited to your imagination, with tv / movies you're stuck with what's onscreen, but games have that unique ability to let you explore and feel like you exist in a world. Culture is a huge part of that. Nintendo has a way of creating worlds with a unique and memorable culture that makes you want to explore!
Thanks so much! I agree, and it’s one of the reasons I love gaming. I’m fascinated with the personal immersion that comes with putting the player in the driver’s seat, and I feel like it makes experiences like this so much more valuable. Thanks so much for sharing!
Ps saro lol. it's sorrow, dude
Thanks for the heads up! Pronunciation always feels like a toss up when a game doesn’t have voice acting. 😂
@@GamesAreCreative true enough, look at final fantasy and ket chi (cait sith)
If you look at how it's spelled in Japanese, it's clear the P is supposed to be pronounced. Pi-Sa-Ro.
Its insane this game' world still is so referenced years later, I recently played some Mario Maker 2 levels based on Sunshine :>
That’s awesome! I agree, the unapologetic sense of self this game has really makes it super unique. There’s nothing else in the series quite like it!
The secret levels were my nightmare! I unironically had a nightmare with the secret stage music in it. That was the night right before I beat the game! But overall Mario Sunshine was fun (except for the secret levels) and I enjoyed my experience with it!
I hear ya! The world and main levels themselves are amazing, but the secret stages are ridiculous. Like between the chuckster, the pachinko machine, and lily pad level, it’s a crowded field of contenders for “most frustrating Mario level.” Great game though!
@@GamesAreCreative this is super unrelated but have you played A Link Between Worlds, it’s one of my favorites and I was wondering if you would ever consider making a video about it one day.
I love ALBW! I don’t know if I’ll be able to get to it for a while, but I would love to do an episode on it. The open-ended design is really cool, especially since it was before even BotW. Definitely more Zelda coming soon!
I just discovered your channel recently. I have really enjoyed your reflection videos. I am making my way through all of them and they are very well done and enjoyable. I look forward to more.
Thanks so much! That means a lot, and I’m glad you’re enjoying the content. Would love to hear your thoughts as you’re watching them, and let me know what games you’d like to see me cover next!
Really looking forward to this.
Me too! It’s been a blast to work on!
"...or do I carry an atmosphere of insecurity and pride?" I've been intentional about tackling pride for the past couple of years. It may sound sanctimonious but for the past two years, I've been wearing a burlap band around my wrist for the coming month. Sort of a "sackcloth and ashes" daily reminder of humility during my culture's celebration of hubris. Everybody who sees this video is going to be subjected to the culturally gauche idea that pride carries a negative connotation and THAT is building culture. Great video.
Thanks Levi! It really is so easy for me to be influenced by how the culture says I should think and feel, so I need reminders like this of the type of man I want to be. It’s cool to hear what that’s looked like for you too! Appreciate you man!
Earlier this year I started playing DQ1 after finding out it was available on the Play Store for Android. Up until then I had no prior knowledge of the franchise other than it had characters designed by Akira Toriyama, that it's considered the father of JRPGs and that it's a "competitor" to Final Fantasy which I'm fairly familiar with. As soon as I started playing DQ1 it was love at first sight. I loved its simplicity and how gameplay focused it was. After finishing it I decided to give DQ4 a go, since I had heard good things about it, particularly about Torneko's chapter and how it's very unique to anything out there. Just like DQ1, I fell in love immediately and DQ4 stands as my favorite so far (I've just finished DQ2 and I'm currently playing DQ3). Anyway, love the game, its characters and soundtrack. All around a great and memorable experience. Thanks for your video on it. I'm looking forward to more!
Thank you so much! DQ really is a special franchise, and for me, 3 and 4 were the ones that really captured me first. I’m relatively new to the series, as well, but I’ve loved my journey with the games thus far! Each one holds such a unique identity while also feeling right at home with the others. The simple but deep gameplay, the art style, and the MUSIC - there has been at least one moment in each game where a moment with a specific song has brought me to tears. Love it, and excited to share the experience with you! Thanks for sharing!
FFII is honestly one of my favorites, and it's all because of the leveling system. I love that you as the player get to choose, through your actions, how your characters grow and what their strengths and weaknesses are. The story and characters are also surprisingly deep and impactful considering the limitations games had at the time.
I’m right there with you. So bummed that I didn’t experience this game earlier in life, but it was a real treat regardless! I totally get why people can be initially put off by the leveling system, but once I figured out how to properly engage with it, I found it to be a great time! Thanks for your thoughts! Hope you enjoyed the video!
@@GamesAreCreative I did enjoy the video, thank you.
Dragon quest games are absolutely a blast because the creaters really knew how to slowly introduce new things and really let you feel out your progress in contrast to the difficulty slowly raising as well. They nailed the trickle of the rpg the first time and everything where others (cough ff1) just doesn't flow as nicely
Agreed! DQIII is still one of the purest RPG experiences I’ve ever had, and I think it’s honestly due in part to what you just said. Pacing is everything, and I love the way these games expertly parcel out the experience. DQIV, in that regard, is an absolute masterclass, as well, since it takes such a wide cast and does a deep dive on each character, all while digging a little deeper into the overall narrative thread of the story! Appreciate your thoughts! Hope you enjoyed the video!
Man tour videos are fantastic, I really hope they blow up in views, you deserve it! ❤️
Thanks so much for your support, David! Glad you enjoy the content!
Lovely video, thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for your support! So glad you enjoyed the video!
IMO the best N64 Zelda game. I appreciate stories that confront the darkest topics to stories that ignore them or nihilistically resign themselves. Hope only shines its brightest when it is darkest.
Agreed! Definitely in my top few Zelda games, and I think the honesty with which it confronts darkness and death is really what sells the experience for me. People always talk about how weird and dark Majora’s Mask is, but I agree with you; darkness for the sake of darkness is just depressing. What I love about Majora’s Mask is how hopeful it actually feels! What you said is so true; that hope is only able to truly shine when the darkness is shown for what it really is. Appreciate your support and thoughts, Adam! My favorite games are the ones that push me to grow as a person, and Majora’s Mask is definitely up there among the best in that regard. Your thoughts always push me to engage more deeply with these games, as well, so thank you!
@@GamesAreCreative No problem, I'm just another person that likes to engage with and craft deep stories. I usually like the stories and characters that inspire or motivate me. Majora's Mask and most Zelda games do that to some degree. It's kind of built in when your main character's defining trait is that he's courageous though.
I’m so confused! I love your content/videos and don’t understand why you aren’t getting more videos!?!? People need to see these
Thanks so much for your support! That means a lot, and I’m glad you’ve enjoyed my content. I’m not going to pretend to know how RUclips’s algorithm works, but at the end of the day, I really enjoy creating these videos regardless. It’s a lifegiving hobby, and I’m grateful I get to do it, even if it doesn’t get a ton of views. Thankful for everyone I get to connect with on this channel, though, so thank you so much for watching and your encouragement!
Great video! Editing was fantastic!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
All hail one of the greatest Zelda games in the franchise!
100%! It holds such a different place in my mind from the rest of the series, but in so many ways, I think it’s legacy actually transcends the Zelda name. And I say that as a Zelda fan! Such a special game. Honestly, That’s one of the reasons why this video took so long to make! It took a while to dial things in to create something that truly did the game justice. Hope you enjoyed, Charles!
HYPE!!
Woo! HYPE TRAAAAAAIN!!! Edit: I signed operation rainfall which turned out to be a massive success for those of us who really wanted to play the last story. Later, I also signed Operation moonfall which was significantly less fruitful. It wasn't like it even brought Majora's Mask to a new generation because Majora's mask has been made available in so many forms already and continues to be made available via the switch. I'm not entirely disappointed to have a portable version of it But when my kids are ready to play through it, I'll offer them the N64 version, the GameCube collector's edition, the Wii U virtual console version, and the Wii version in that order before I'll suggest Majora's Mask 3D.
I hear ya man! I definitely don’t love a lot of the changes MM3D made, because they change a bit too much about what made the original great. That’s honestly why I love the Project Restoration mod I used for this playthrough, though. I feel like it does a great job of capturing the original’s strengths while also celebrating the remake’s visual updates. But when it comes to playing without mods, I totally agree. N64 version all the way!
Also, you should totally check out Nerrel’s RUclips content. He’s been a big part of the MM modding community and is generally just really insightful about game preservation. He’s pretty dry but honestly super funny. Great content!
@@GamesAreCreative I've watched some of his videos over the years and his name comes up when i mod Nintendo consoles. I've got three modded 3DS', I need to grab the restoration mod. Thanks for the tip! Also, I am a big fan of the restrictions (time, saves) in Majora's Mask. I think they really make the game. MM3D changing those hurt the remake. And I know the screen real estate is limited but they scrapped the clock and dropped in a "time line"! The clock was wonderful and they should have found a way to keep it. And the boss eyes! Twinmold! Zora swimming! Bah, I don't need to complain, Zelda's done me right for the most part. I know I mentioned it to you before but just know I look forward to when you run out of other Zelda games and are forced to do Four Swords Adventures because I will represent that game till the day I die. Thank you so much for the video, I really look forward to these.
Thanks for the encouragement, Levi! Appreciate you! And yeah, it was a bummer to have so much hype going into MM3D after years of begging for it, only for it to not stick the landing. I agree though; it’s tough to be too mad about anything with Zelda!
If I could like multiple times, I would!! Keep up the good work :)
Thanks so much! Appreciate your encouragement!
Nice Video, But You Should Have Played The Nes Version The DS one it's not really good the Original it's way Batter.
For sure, I agree with you there. At the time, I was still learning which version of each FF game is optimal, and the Pixel Remasters hadn’t all been released quite yet. I’ve got them on my backlog now that they’re out, though, and I’m looking forward to playing through them!
Really Well Made Video. What Makes Dragon Quest Series Such A Loveable Franchise, It's Is Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball/Dragon Quest Artworker Design. Glad you enjoyed The Game. I have Finished All Four Nes Dragon Quest Games. My Goal is to Finish All Dragon Quest Games. ❤✌️
Sorry for the late response, but thanks so much for your support! DQIV is such a special game, so I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
beautiful ending!! my brother in Christ!
Thank you so much! Appreciate your support!
@@GamesAreCreative Peace be with you!
Bro, remember Karting at the Ranch that one time!
Haha for sure! Was it 64 that we played?
@@GamesAreCreative I think it was Switch.
@@WestmarchMedia Ooooh yeah, that’s right. How could I forget destroying you in Mario Kart while you were living at the Palace? That entire evening is still one of the funniest experiences I’ve ever had.
@@GamesAreCreative Haha! Yes it was!
Wario getting knocked off of the course at 1:38 made me laugh extremely hard! Another great video! Your editing is on point!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. And for real, it felt like half my footage was stuff like that: just 1000 ways to die in Mario Kart. 😂 This game is brutal at times, but sometimes you just gotta laugh after being dunked on so hard!
RUclips doesn't take video length into consideration when deciding that you're dead between videos. The algorithm has been brutal to your channel. Hope they get their act together so you get the recognition you ought to receive. Great video.
Thanks man, appreciate you! I’m still having a great time with this channel, and I feel like I learn so much with each video. I completely recognize that my approach doesn’t align with RUclips’s algorithm, but I would rather create something more timeless, that I can be proud of for a long time. I would definitely love sharing my videos with more people, but I’m proud of what I create and love engaging with you all like this. It’s been such a gift to share it with you! Thanks again Levi!
It's probably nostalgia, but I really love the 64 tracks. Rather than every track having to have its own gimmicks, I'm happy with some being packed with gimmicks and some light or without gimmicks.
That’s fair! I have honestly always loved the 64 tracks too, and I love seeing them return in later games. Like you said, a lot of them have an elegant simplicity to them that just feels nice compared to the more gimmicky tracks. I think my biggest struggle with this game comes from the combination of the lengthier and gimmicky tracks (Bowser’s Castle is a perfect example) combined with just how slow the game feels in general. It gave me more perspective as to how the series has been really well refined over time, but it was also cool to see the origin of some iconic tracks!
Glad to see you back! ♥♥♥♥♥
Thanks! Glad to be back. 😊 It’s been a busy season, so progress has been a bit slower than I was hoping. I’d rather spend more time to make sure it turns out well rather than rushing things out, though. It’s definitely been a practice in patience!
Generation 1 will always have a special place in my heart. It may not be pretty and saying that it was held together by paperclips and bubblegum is an insult to paperclips and bubblegum, but these games were very important to me and my brother during our earlier years and still are to this day. Pokémon was a phenomenon. You couldn't escape it whether you wanted to or not. Everyone we knew had the games and it was briefly playing our friends' Game Boys that we were able to get our first taste of Red and Blue. When we got Game Boy Colors of our own around the time of my brother's birthday, we got a slew of games like Link's Awakening DX, but the ones we wanted the most were the Pokemon games. We would ultimately get all three games for ourselves that year, but despite us having already sampled Red and Blue, our first game that we *owned* was Yellow. Our parents even bought us an unofficial guide in order to see how we could defeat Brock without using Bulbasaur, Squirtle or even Charmander (you can at least cheese Brock with a STAB Ember even as a first form Fire type; not so in Fire Red and Leaf Green!). What we got was an informative guide that laid out the differences between the three versions (i.e.: Pikachu naturally learning Thunderbolt at Level 26). It also had a brief HISTORY of the development of the games including the little factoid that the games were originally Red and *Green* with the one left behind becoming (for our intents and purposes) our American Blue. It also had photos of merchandise from Japan that haven't yet come stateside (most never did), an episode list that briefly gave a summary of each episode up to that point in Japan (and yes, it DID include the banned Electric Porygon episode), a Pokedex that had the Pokemon Stadium models next to the Pokémon *Green* sprites, a primer on the Pokémon TCG and, last but certainly not least, walkthroughs for Generation 1 and even Pokémon Snap of all games! I still have the guide in my room with some of the pages missing, presumable lost in my cousin's house over in the Philippines when we went there on vacation back in '99. Anyways, the guide taught us that there were wild Mankey west of Viridian City that can learn Low Kick at Level 9. It also taught us that Butterfree now learns Confusion at Level 10, the earliest it can evolve! Despite this, and because we were stubborn, we decided the best course of action was to powerlevel our Pikachu to Level 20 so it can learn Slam. Yes it's a garbage move, but we wanted to prove we could beat Brock with just a Pikachu. And beat him we did. Not only did it make the rest of the warly game easier (our Pikachu was at max happiness meaning we could immediately pick up the Bulbasaur at Cerulean City), but it meant we were more likely to learn Thunderbolt right before Misty. This surprisingly effective strategy has been so ingrained in my mind that I do this alongside training Mankey to Level 9 and getting Butterfree at Level 10 every single time I replay Yellow. Some habits, like Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Adventure 2, die hard. XD Anyways, I really enjoyed the video! You basically managed to take every reason Generation 1 was such a great game and how it changed the gaming landscape in a clear and concise video. Keep up the great work!
