    This guy is the absolute bomb. I've been a Zelda fan since the mid 90's and have spent thousands of hours writing fan fiction (when I was a kid), songs, theory, and poetry about the series. My wedding band is a tattooed Wind Waker stylized curl, my kids are being raised on the old cartoon ( they all think it's hilarious to say "well excuuuse me, princess!"), and my oldest daughter's name is that of a lake where I spent many pleasant hours as a kid (that's how I sold my wife on Hylia). I love this series and can say with complete surety that Games Are Creative is in the top five Zelda RUclipsrs on the platform. And that's not even half of his content! If the three golden goddesses still bend an ear to the voices of hylians, Games Are Creative will absolutely reach a million subscribers in time.

      Totally. I didn’t play ALttP until a little later in life, so it doesn’t hold as much nostalgia for me, and I do think the puzzle design is a little basic compared to later games. But I still love this one, especially when comparing how handholdy some of the later titles can get. ALttP feels menacing but also full of wonder!

    This game is still my favorite game in the franchise. There's a sense of adventure and magic in this one that was perfectly encapsulated for a game that was released very early on in the Super Nintendo's lifespan.

      For sure, I think you hit the nail on the head. ALttP just nails a balance between so many different elements that coalesce to make a truly magical experience. Crazy how well this game holds up 30 years later, too!

    I can really hear the love for the series in your narration. I appreciate that you consistently relate ALttP to other games in the series, drawing a connecting line from it's origins in LoZ/AoL, to the future games, and especially in comparison to BotW, based on their inception in the original game's formula. Many players thought BotW was entirely new, but it is and isn't.

    • @GamesAreCreative

      Thanks so much, Nick! I love Zelda so much, so this really was a special episode for me. I’m glad that showed through, and it was cool getting to reflect on my experience with the series as a whole as I worked on this video. BotW felt like a love letter to the heart of the original Zelda, like you said, but this game really represents so much that the series strives to be in a completely different, but also valuable, way!

    If you think about it, Ocarina of Time’s story borrowed a lot from ALttP. You collect three artifacts to pull the master sword, then go into a new but familiar world to save 7 magical beings and then fight Ganon(dorf)

    Some people talk about how "hand-holdy" Zelda has become since A Link To The Past (ALTTP), how the adventure feels more directed rather than open.
    But as Razbuten said in his video; Open-world games don't really matter, especially if the main story is suppose to be an urgent mission (like saving the princess who is captured).
    I think they've struck a good balance between open-ended and linear in ALTTP, especially for its time.
    And if you're ever lost, you can always spend some rupees on the fortune-teller to get a hint to where to go next. You don't HAVE to, but it's there for those who want to use it.

    • @GamesAreCreative
      @GamesAreCreative  2 года назад +1

      Such a great point! At the end of the day, I want to make my own decisions, yes, but I also want a sense of direction and momentum in the adventure. I think ALttP’s structure strikes a good balance in that, and I think OoT does it, as well. I’ve always felt like the “quest item” structure of Zelda games where you have to beat dungeons to collect a certain amount of maguffins is perfectly set up for choice-driven gameplay, but especially later on in the series, you’re forced to do them in a specific order. Honestly, not a big enough deal to kill my enjoyment, but it’s why I’m all the more blown away by titles like ALttP!

    My mans, Both Zelda 2 and SMB 2 are actually other games re-skinned and partially upgraded/reworked to become part of the Zelda and Mario franchises respectively.
    So when you talk about the direction they went in being different and having to make a choice about it in following games, it doesn't track the same way as if the games had been purposely chosen as new directions to go by the developers

    • @GamesAreCreative
      @GamesAreCreative  2 года назад

      I totally hear what you’re saying. I talked about SMB2 and Doki Doki Panic during my SMB2 episode, but I really had too many other things to discuss with Adventure of Link so decided not to focus on its origins as much. I completely agree, though, that reskinning another game is totally different than investing the time and resources into developing one from scratch.
      I should have clarified this more in the episode, but my discussion is more focused on what Nintendo did with the games they had than where they came from. So even if SMB2 used to be a different game, Miyamoto still oversaw Doki Doki Panic, and plenty of elements (shy guys, bob-ombs, Birdo) made their way into future games. The same goes with Adventure of Link, as well. It’s ideas may have come from outside the Zelda team, but since it was now part of the series, the team needed to choose if/what ideas they wanted to take from it and implement in future titles.
      All that being said, I appreciate the feedback and discussion! Hope you enjoyed the video!
