  • The Legend of Zelda brought epic adventures to the world of gaming, and even though the series has since wrestled back and forth with difficulty and accessibility, this first title does not pull any punches. This NES game brought forth an iconic franchise and has inspired countless others, and it did so by allowing players the simple joy of discovery. 🎮🎨

    Zelda was the first cartridge game with a save file and thus needed a battery to keep the memory.
    Imagine if this format was never thought of and every instance of games were arcade style, turn the power off and you start the whole game over...

      Thank you!! I’ve gotta admit, I’ve never owned a physical copy of this first game, so you’ve got a 1-up on me there. 😂 But I actually looked up the manual online and had it open while I was playing the game, just so I could try and recreate the feeling of playing it back in the 80’s. I drew my own maps, which was honestly so fun and rewarding! I know this is partially because of the limitations of the hardware back then, but the fact that so much of figuring out the game was on the player makes it so engaging to experience!

      Dang, I was born in ‘95, but I wish I could’ve experienced this game back in the 80’s. That must’ve been wonderful! I had a blast making my own maps and writing down notes and clues while playing this, and while BotW definitely has the benefit of 3 decades of technological improvements, I actually had a similar experience writing notes for that game. Such an engaging adventure, and one of the main reasons I love Zelda so much! Thanks for your support!!

    The very first Zelda isn't only the original open world, it's also still the best to this day because it's the only one to ever get the concept of an open world right so far. Many games, including another Zelda game in the same series have tried their own take on open world, but all failed in the by being too different or too original, not really implementing enough of what Zelda I has taught game devs of how open world is actually supposed to work. Hence why they all feature various flaws like brittle weapons (the case in BotW), enemy placements that feel kind of like random copy and paste (the case for a lot of modern open world games), lack of enemy variety (the case in BotW), etc.
    The Nintendo Zelda team of the 80's laid out a genius formula to learn from and rules that must apply, but a lot of devs today choose to ignore those rules. Only very few devs have taken some note of those rules. Though of those devs are either indie devs or fan game devs. For example Zelda 1 has a sort of difficulty ranking system when it comes to it's areas and dungeons by ranking each of the dungeons by a level. While most other devs who have actually followed by those rules have merely rated their dungeons difficulty by stars, dots, or easy to hard.
    A lot of devs naturally think it's more realistic to not follow by those rules so much. Though the problem with that is that when you take something like away then a game starts to become a little too much like real life, where you don't know which area and which dungeons are actually easier or harder. It becomes a situation where there's just too much unknown. I get not rating the areas and dungeons outright, but to sort of randomize everything where there's implication that anywhere could be easier or harder can really get players lost and confused at times.
    I've lost count as to how many times I asked the same questions over and over again. Questions like "Where should I start?", "Do I go this way first?", "Is this actually where I should be going first?", "Is this really the easiest dungeon in the game?", etc. I found it kind of annoying at times where I thought one way was the right way to start with, only to find that it's tough territory that's more for late stuff. But how am I supposed to know that without any indication? It's so annoying when I find myself in tough areas or attempting tough bosses too early. Especially it's within the beginning areas of the game.
    And finally, the brittle weapons thing in games like BotW are also a huge problem. Especially when there's no way to indicate how much durability they have left before they break or even any way to repair them either. It's quite frustrating when you just got a cool new weapon to use, only to lose it in a matter of seconds of using it. It's annoying!
    That all said is why Zelda 1 is and likely always will be not only the original open world game, but also the best open world game ever made! It's design was just pure genius! Especially for it's time, and, in way, even to this day!

      Thank you so much for sharing! I totally see where you’re coming from, and while I will always love BotW and the rest of the Zelda series for other reasons, I agree that there’s a distinct magic about this game that hasn’t totally been recaptured since. I think your point about coupling open-ended design with a loose sense of direction and order (like the dungeon levels) is so true. Love this game! Thanks so much for watching and for your support!

    Yes! Great Zelda games come and go, but I'll always come back to the OG. The level of freedom and the exploration is phenomenal! I got the same feelings playing Breath of the Wild-that joy of discovery, that sense of danger out in the unknown: there's nothing quite like it! 😮😍😎

    • @GamesAreCreative

      Well spoken, my friend! I’ve always been fascinated by the potential video games have to put a player in the driver’s seat and allow them to learn and grow on a real adventure, and Zelda was the game that awakened that spirit in me! And you’re right, not every Zelda game lives up to that sense of freedom and discovery, but that’s all the more reason to celebrate the true beauty of what Nintendo captured with this first game.

      True, true. My name for the video is mainly referring to the spirit behind Zelda and what it did for mainstream gaming, rather than meaning it was the literal first one. But you’re totally right, though! Ultima did so much for games like Zelda, Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy, so it’s a shame that series doesn’t get more recognition.

  • @chadliterutherford9198
    @chadliterutherford9198 2 года назад

    Your video has nice presentation but unfortunately I believe you said nothing new, you failed to mention how BoTW doesn't have dungeons or any order of game content like Zelda 1 has, noticed how you said you could do any dungeon in any order in Zelda 1? Well in BoTW there is nothing to do out of order because there is no structure or progression to the game
    Also it seems like you throw shade at future Zeldas for not being as open as Zelda 1. Well its not entirely true Zelda 1 is totally open, there is item gating, and if you want to go in dungeons grab the item and leave, well you can do that in OoT, MM, and ALttP as well. Zelda 1 also has very little going on for its level design, theres no lakes to swim thru or hookshot gaps to cross, no horse races or fishing, the game is simple
    I can see the appeal of making another Zelda title where the main items needed for exploration like the bombs and candle, are found outside of dungeons allowing the player more choice which route to take, but BoTW most certainly messed everything up by having all items found at the start and having no linear structure to it, in BoTW what is there to discover? Not level 8 or the red ring thats for sure, more like another Korok Seed and Shrine

    • @GamesAreCreative
      @GamesAreCreative  2 года назад

      Thanks for your feedback! My goal with this video was not really to give an exhaustive review of the game or series, but more to share my experience with an adventure that’s been really important to me. There was a lot more that I wish I could’ve talked about, but the reality is that I just don’t have that much time to make videos that long 😂
      You’re totally right about non-linearity in other Zelda games, but I personally enjoy experiencing each dungeon as a whole instead of grabbing items and going elsewhere. I definitely see how there’s a ton of potential for choices when you do that though!
      I intentionally didn’t bring up BotW a ton, because I’m planning to dedicate a separate video to it at some point. I personally love that game, but I agree that it does have some notable weaknesses in its design.
      Honestly, though, I’m just not super interested in meticulously picking these games apart and critiquing them a ton. You’re totally right, there are a ton of channels that do that already and do it more thoroughly than me. This is more of a creative outlet for me to celebrate what there is to love about these games, and I’m glad to share in that discussion with anyone who wants to join! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts!
