Pokemon Competitive Singles is a world where not every Pokemon has a home. Usage based tiering is a great system allowing such fellows as Beedrill and Castform to be metagame relevant somewhere.
But some Pokemon are stuck in that Limbo. Not good enough for the OU Tier, but too powerful for UU.
This is UUBL. However even some UUBL Pokemon find a niche in OU from time to time.
And some don't even have that luxury. Let's explore some forgotton Pokemon that were almost good, but fell just short.

I propose that Crobat should learn High Horsepower instead of Earthquake, so that it may use its Infiltrator ability to infiltrate the Horse Council.

This video reminds me of another stalwart and altruistic Pokemon who has unfortunately fallen just short of competitive viability: the Water and Rock-type Corsola. She possesses many desirable qualities, such as the abilities Natural Cure and Regenerator, access to useful defensive moves in Stealth Rock, Mirror Coat, and Recover, as well as a winning smile and cheerful personality. I only wish the best for Corsola in her future endeavors. Thank you.
Corsola would absolutely be a great horse to join the horse council, sadly it doesnt learn High Horse Power
As a fellow Water and Rock type who commonly found itself either in UU or Ubers, but rarely OU, Kabutops understands and sympathizes with Corsola.

Due to the fixed bonus of 100 base stat points for Mega Evolutions, for Mega Pidgeot, they probably should've done what they did with Mega Beedrill: take points out of its less important attacking stat and add it to the other. As far as I know, Mega Pidgeot only uses its Attack stat for U-Turn, so it wouldn't have lost anything major by losing base stat points from that. But yeah, having a better movepool would definitely help it, too.
meanwhile there was that CAP mega with no guard and every low accuracy high power special move under the sun that was so powerful they had to nerf its movepool
Snorlax absolutely should have gotten Slack Off in Gen 4 onwards to be more viable. You know, the Pokemon who is known for being lazy and sleepy to the point where it's a static encounter in the Kanto games because it fell asleep in two separate locations.
Being lazy is not quite the same as being asleep all the time, though. Slack Off is just the Pokemon taking it easy. Snorlax is more about outright sleeping.
But yes, it definitely needed Slack Off to keep up.

I can only hope Macargo remembers all of the clients, loyal supporters, and common folk who funded, campaigned, and sacrificed to ensure his rightful position on The Horse Council. Failure to acknowledge and reward such devotion and service will surely come back to haunt him.

Dusclops needs to be traded while holding the reaper cloth to evolve, so overcoat makes perfect sense! It's just wearing the cloth now and using it to protect from weather

Renegade Platinum gave Dusknoir Iron Fist and Drain Punch, which is a potent mix. With a moveset of elemental punches, drain punch, and shadow punch all boosted by iron fist, it could make Dusknoir more viable.
And While it is technically good for its tier, its still insane to think that Kyurem Black is just an ordinary OU pokemon for its debut in competitive, despite being a Boxart Legendary.

The one mon that always comes to mind for "almost good" is Cresselia in Gen 4 OU. On paper it is the bulkiest mon in the entire metagame, but in practice, it has quite a few drawbacks holding it back.
I think Crobat getting low sweep as a fighting move in Gen 3 would make sense, even if it isn't the best fighting move.
I think Magic Guard would make more sense than Overcoat for Dusknoir, and it would be a slightly better ability. Maybe it would be too much, though?
I mean, every mega form only added 100 bst to the original forms, so the issue wasn't on the mega form, but the base form. Mega alakazam reaches high stats because they were already high before the mega. Mega pidgeot musst work like mega beedrill, being a fast one trick poney (not that they are horses) in order to have any chance of doing something.
I mean... it COULD get the ash greninja treatment for a 110 stat increase with no item needed. ASH PIDGEOT would be a happy present for some xD

Actually, you may be onto something. If Pidgeot learned High Horsepower, Mega Pidgeot could be classified as a horse, allowing it access to the horse council and greatly boosting its viability...
Dusknoir just needed recover or a boosting move like Bulk up.

Dusknoir is such a cool and menacing design, I’ve tried to make him work a bunch of times but all of his assets are just not quite good enough to work well in any gen I’ve tried, it always feels like there’s a better option available on whatever tier it ends up in. I guess he’ll just have to make do with being the villain in PMD2

the reason mega pidgeot has such medocre stats is
1. It decided to be a special attacker when in base form it has a higher attack stat.
2. And more importantly, megas only give 100 bst above the base version which makes mega pidgeot only have 579 bst and 65 of those 100 stats go to special attack.
I mean, they could've moved some of its base form's attack to special attack. Mega Beedrill has a BST 490 and it still managed a 150 Attack/145 Speed.
@@MMurine that is true, i honestly forgot they did that to beedrill. it loses 30 spatk whem mega evolving, but idk if any other actually redistributes the stats like that, if they changed mega pidgeot's attack to give it more special attack or speed it would have been cool though.
@@Isabelle-mp8rk A lot of them lower the base form's speed. Heracross, Garchomp, Camerupt, Ampharos, Sableye and Abomasnow all lose speed when mega evolving.

from a VGC perspective, Hisuan Qwilfish and Overqwil couldve been genuinely fantastic intimidate options IF they had access to Flip Turn (like johnto qwilfish does)

great video, but I think its important to mention that Pidgeot faces SIGNIFICANT competition from tornadus-t in its format, which can hold an item, has similar stats (bulkier and can actually switch in on things), focus blast, knock off and has regenerator which is amazing. Pidgeot would probably have to be made into a fighting-type and given focus blast to have an actual niche

Mega Pidgeot does get STAB Hyper Beam with 100% accuracy. There’s no guarding that.

The buffs on crobat reminds me of Pokeaim universally suggesting Close Combat on everything imaginable
The real tragedy of dusknoir that never gets mentioned is it would be an excellent curse user and learns the move but can’t actually use it

I dont want to alert anybody but with that 85 base attack on Magcargo-Horse-Prime would've had to crit High Horsepower on Horsea to kill. I think he did it.
Ran the calcs with 252+ Atk 85 Base Attack Magcargo and it rolls for 77.1-91%.
252+ Atk Magcargo High Horsepower vs. 0 HP / 0- Def 0 IVs Horsea: 155-183 (77.1 - 91%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Magcargo High Horsepower vs. 0 HP / 0- Def 0 IVs Horsea on a critical hit: 232-274 (115.4 - 136.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Wasn't Staraptor stuck in UUBL hell for several generations? Obviously you give a guy Brave Bird + Close Combat and he'll fly to the moon until someone hits him back. Base 120 attack used to mean something, and Intimidate is a solid ability to gain some entry points. Might just be a bad match for OU where Normal + Flying get walled by any Steel type and Close Combat isn't hitting hard enough to break the usual checks.
Me and my friends made a fake gen 4 meta game where we edited move sets and abilities. It’s really surprising how once dusknoir gets tools like intimidate and recover makes it such a good wall. I mean yeah those two tools are really good but stopping adaptability garchomp and brave bird banded ayro is really cool.
Very sad about the loss that my favorite Pokémon, Horsea, suffered. Hopefully it will be back in action soon.
Macargo is still 4x weak to ground, presenting another extreme weakness. He must beware, for traitors are ahoof everywhere. The high horsepower that brought him here might be his undoing.

Rumors are going around that King Magcargo is about to be assassinated with the ability defying 4x super effective Snipe Shot, we can only hope the perpetuator will miss and only hit the right ear.
I felt this really hard with Specs Sylveon in ORAS OU, and is something I originally discovered as an anti-meta threat to make mega sableye players regret their lives. It was amazing then, but now it struggles too much I think.
If Sylveon had just like, one more thing, specs/pixie plate Sylveon would be one of the scariest wall breakers in the tier. Spammable special fairy stab on a nonmega is nonexistent in the tier, and 90% of Pokemon just get deleted by specs hyper voice, and even resists take huge damage.
If it was a tiny bit faster, it could speed creep some common counters. If it had a tiny bit more hp it could set up 101 hp subs. If it had a slightly better move pool, it could tech something to deal with Chansey (something like trick, taunt). The baton pass ban for pivoting also really hurt it. It's stats and movepool are ultimately just a little too bad.
I've tried to make this thing work so much, and it often goes 2.5 for 1 vs balance teams and is bulky enough to be a huge nuisance to offense, but it just can't justify a role when the opponent has certain defensive cores that just kill it.
Mega Pidgeot at least is a good Pokemon in National Dex RU, incredibly fun tier by the way.

i've used dusknoir in dpp ou and bdsp ou, and whenever i used it i was mainly making use of its wide coverage to be surprisingly threatening, that's what sets it apart from the other old gen ghost types, so if you ask me it should be getting an offensive ability rather than overcoat. a fun one would be iron fist since it has all the elemental punches (and at the time its only stab was shadow punch so that would be a bit less pathetic)
I feel Zebstrika...
I love this Pokémon.
But it needs volt tackle. It also needs Flare Blitz (it already has overheat, flame charge). And get rid of one of its redundant electric immunity abilities and give it Reckless because the PokeDex talks of Zebstrika's poor temper and rage. It even gets thrash as a move to support this. Hell, for giggles give it Outrage too.
But the ideal set would be:
Life Orb + Reckless:
-Volt Tackle
-Flare Blitz
-High Horsepower
-Volt Switch
dusknoir is actually one of my favourite pokemon designs it’s a shame it’s really difficult to get in most games and is never worth the effort

I fear an equine empire or horse hegemony may result from macargo's monopoly on pokemon power.
Dusknoir has such a big mouth that I'm shocked they've never given it Strong Jaw (which didn't exist in Gen IV tbf) to let it use moves like Poison Fang or Crunch/Jaw Lock (in later generations). Having a move that causes toxic without giving up on damage potential sounds really nice, if not necessarily game changing.
Porygon-Z is also really close to being a great pokemon competitively. Just barely too slow, and just barely not enough coverage. Hopefully they give it some love later down the line. It’s one of my favourite pokemon
Video Idea: Newer Pokémon That Might Fit Well Into Older Generations
Some examples:
-Despite being Gen 3 additions, Latias and Latios share many of Gen 2’s identifying features, like held items, genders, and the split Special stat. They were even in a Gen 2 movie!
-Haxorus is notable for being a Pokémon developed far earlier than its debut game was even announced, and some of this design can be seen in how it feels like it would right at home in Gen 4 without being too overpowered. It may hit really hard, but it doesn’t contribute as much bulk and Speed as other top-tier Dragons of the time.
-This is an Ability change rather than that of a Pokémon’s debut generation, but how would Alakazam perform without Magic Guard from Gen 5 onwards? Similarly, how much better would it be in Gens 3 and 4 with this Ability?
The horse council has been taken over by a hostile, not horse force. We need a hero from the sea!

Dusknoir's state in Gen 5 is especially cruel.
Not only it finds itself in RU, which is tiered below its pre-evolved form, but it is completely unviable in RU, so it finds itself in tiering limbo.
What makes this especially cruel is that Dusclops too is stuck in tiering limbo, as it is completely unviable in UU.
Porygon-Z is in multiple metagames almost good, but if you gave it basically any significant buff, it would easily become crazy powerful.
Noivern is a similar case, where multiple OMs show how devastating STAB Boomburst on that thing would be.
As a big PMD fan, is has always pained me how bad Dusknoir is, and how Dusclops objectively outclasses it in later gens.
If I could give the guy any buff, I would really like to see it with Iron Fist. It thematically fits with the big bulky arms, and would buff options like Drain Punch for recovery. I'd also buff Shadow Punch to base 75 to compliment this change.
Dusknoir is such a tragedy when it comes to evolutions
Dusknoir deserves to languish in a meta he had no business being in. Serves him right for what he did to Grovyle.
Squawkabilly: man has literally the best selection of abilities (4 in total, ironically), and yet his *TERRIBLE* movepool doesn't allow him to run any of them effectively.
Intimidate is fine for support, he also gets Parting Shot, U-Turn & Roost, but he lacks the Base Stats to be a support Pokémon.
Hustle is just terrible and he literally has ONE move that he can exploit with it: Aerial Ace.
Guts + Flame Orb sounds good, he has the moves to use it, but there are a lot of other Pokémon that can do it much better.
Lastly, Sheer Force + Life Orb sounds broken, but when you realize the only move he can boost is "Pounce"... oh well.
Really, this Pokémon is a walking (flying) tragedy.
Whats really unfortunate about dusknoir, is that if they updated tiers and dropped it to UU, it would likely be fairly balancedand useable in some situations
Gen 1 Pinsir is one good bug move away from completely shaking up rby ou. If x-scissor existed in gen 1 it would be great but even twineedle would be good.
Gen 3 Gyarados is 2 base speed away from being able to run an attack boosting nature while still outspeeding Aero and Jolteon after a one DD.
Staraptor, the pokemon who spent all its time since gen4 in UUBL, its brave bird being too powerful for UU but it's speed being too low for OU
Magcargo was just showing off against horsea. Magcaro-horse-prime has an insane base special attack and horses has a terrible base special defence and still he opted to use a non-stab physical attack to one shot horses.
One might to so far to say he was horsing around.
I truly hope Horsea learns from his mistakes and turns into a friendly Seadra or even Kingdra.
Unfortunately the dry lands may not be welcoming him too soon, as his horse leadership was far too biased in his own misconceptions.
Alas we enter a new era for horses worldwide.

I believe Mega Pidgeot should get Inferno, translating its infernal suffering since gen 1 where it was outclassed by the weakest shitmons available in route 2, and Blizzard, translating the cold it felt alone in untiered metas until it got a Mega form.
This with Focus Blast and 10 more in SpAtk would definitely make it very balanced. I am not biased in any shape.
Dusknoir not getting Levitate is weird as it literally levitates in battle

Crobat's name and shape should have given it access to Cross Chop

Dusknoir would be great if only it had a solid HP stat to work with and reliable recovery.
Gen III and IV have such overblown bordlerline tiers that they can function as their own placement.
Magcargo changed my life
Gen 6 Hawlucha seems like a strong physical sweeper with a great movepool and access to Unburden on top of its 118 base Speed. Unfortunately its gimmicky signature move Flying Press is underwhelming, and its 92 base Attack is a little anemic. Hawlucha struggles to take advantage of coverage options like Stone Edge because it needs both Substitute and Swords Dance to do its job. On top of all this, Talonflame exists. Not only does it easily OHKO Hawlucha with its priority Flying STAB, it's also mostly outclassing you in the SD+Acro sweeper role.
I wonder if changing Flying Press would fix this bird. Make it a Close Combat clone, 120/100 and dropping your defenses. Then Hawlucha could run White Herb to activate Unburden, and maybe find a moveslot for Stone Edge so it isn't stonewalled by Zapdos
Dusknoir should get an ability buff. I’ld call this new ability Reaper Force, essentially, Ghost type Dragon’s Maw
