  • The second Dragon Quest brought loads of innovations both to the series and the RPG genre, but sadly, its lack of refinement has led to this game being quickly overshadowed by later titles. Dragon Quest II may not always stick the landing, but its ambitious expansion of the original's formula deserves to be celebrated. 🎮🎨

    Goggles are sick, dawg

Nothing against goggles in the proper setting, but I'd just prefer the hero in a high fantasy game to look less like a mechanic in Star Wars.

Very good review, at some points of the game I honestly considered dropping it but I just kept pushing through. I eventually got stumped when the 2nd prince gets sick and you have to look for the Yggdrasil Leaf because I was too prideful to use a guide, but again I kept pushing and eventually I found it after hours of backtracking. It was honestly the best feeling I ever got while gaming and when I look back at it I realized that is how this game is meant to be played, it is an adventure game after all and if you used guides you spoil the experience. I totally agree, thanks for sharing! DQII in a lot of ways embodies that soul-crushing difficulty and obtuse design of old RPG’s, and while I’m glad video games have gotten better at subtly providing hints and guidance, I find that my most impactful memories of overcoming adversity come from games like this!

I think the 11th hero is the worst when it comes to look.

I agree, I was definitely underwhelmed by the Hero in 11, although he kinda reminds me of long hair Trunks from the Cell Saga of DBZ, which kinda redeems him for me. It's just hard to compete with how awesome some of the heroes look, though! I think 3 might be my favorite in that regard.

I always thought VI had the lamest hero, especially when looking at his super cool original design

I think DQ2 is a great game, but it suffers from middle child syndrome, sandwiched between the famous first game and the legendary third game.

I couldn’t agree more; I think you hit the nail on the head! I feel like every game after 2 has its own unique identity that stands out among the rest, but 2 will always suffer from being the one that’s not 1 or 3.
