Excellent video! Pokemon is such a good time and really helped shape my childhood. Honestly they helped me learn how to read in kindergarten because I needed to beat the game to impress my friends lol. I love the production quality of these videos and I hope they really take off in viewership soon! They deserve it man! Also, I love the little message at the end. Well done!

Thanks so much, that encouragement means a lot! I’m totally with you; these games have been with me ever since I could hold a Gameboy, and it’s fun to look back on those special memories I’ve shared with specific games and Pokémon. What you mentioned reminds me of how Ruby and Sapphire asked me to learn Braille in order to catch the Regi trio. So ridiculous, but honestly pretty awesome.
So glad you appreciated the video! Grateful for your support!

My first starter Pokemon is Bulbasaur. I can't remember exactly why I decide to pick it but maybe it's because he was the only one not on the box art like Charmander and Squirtle.
Bulbasaur, to me, felt like an underdog, the least popular one compare to Charmander (a cool baby dragon with a flaming tail) and Squirtle (a cute-looking one that seems more popular to girls).
The most fun thing about Pokemon back then was how easy it was to talk to other kids about it. We talk about the game, the anime, or we see something in the anime and discover it in the game or vice-versa.

That’s so awesome, man! I feel like Bulbasaur deserves so much more love. I must admit, I’m a Charmander bandwagoner, but I honestly really love all 3 Gen 1 starters! The games have aged quite a bit at this point, but it’s cool to hear stories like yours and remember my own about my first experience with this series. Thanks for sharing!

I wish I could say the same. 😂 Pokémon was my childhood too, but I had absolutely no understanding of strategy back then! So many special memories though!

The power of nostalgia is both Pokémon's greatest strength and weakness. Pokémon captures the hearts of children all across the world, and those children grow up loving Pokémon throughout their lives. Game Freak knows this; they understand the personal connection you have with your Pokémon, the unforgettable journey you embarked on with your first game, and the fond memories you hold of Pokémon.
On the surface, this seems like a positive thing, and in some ways, it is. I'm not here to tell you that you can't enjoy Pokémon due to nostalgia. Instead, I'm here to discuss how the game's quality is affected by it. Pokémon stands as one of the most successful franchises in the world. However, the games often fail to reflect that success. They might be buggy, possess low-quality graphics, or even be perceived as overall boring.
How does Pokémon manage to get away with this? Let me explain why: nostalgia. Pokémon fans from around the world tend to acquire each new entry because it's a new Pokémon game, and they recall the enjoyment they experienced as kids. And guess what? Game Freak is well aware of this. Consequently, the games often have lower quality than they should, because Game Freak knows they don't have to put in excessive effort. They understand that Pokémon fans will purchase the next game regardless. Thus, the power of nostalgia might be beneficial for fans but detrimental to the games' quality.

This is super insightful; thanks so much for sharing! I will love Pokémon until my dying breath 😂, but I totally agree that, especially in recent years, it seems like The Pokémon Company kinda has abused that hold it has on its fans.
Part of me wonders how much of it is Game Freak and how much is The Pokémon Company. Like when I played SwSh, Legends, and SV, I felt like all of them had a lot of solid ideas that were WAY too rushed. It made me wonder what kind of pressure Game Freak might be under to keep up with the anime, TCG, and other merchandise. They know that the video games are the engine that keep the Pokémon machine running; I just wonder if the fault is up to the devs or if it’s the corporate heads.
All that being said, I agree that Pokémon struggled with ambition and originality long before the Switch era. In my opinion, the quality drop off in the visual department really started after Gen 5, but even before then, we had basically played the same game a half dozen times already, just repackaged with different critters. 😂
All that to say, I hear you and I’m with you. I love Pokémon and have bought every mainline game, but it sucks to know that there are people out there who seek to profit off of that with as little effort and creativity as possible.
Regardless, though, what I’ve loved most about my journey on this channel so far is that no matter how many competing interests or corporate agendas might influence a game’s development, there’s always still room to find something to celebrate in a work of art. I think 2 things can be true at once, and while Pokémon certainly does not typically capture all that it could be, the series will always be special in my eyes.
Thanks again for sharing! Hope you enjoyed the video!

My oldest son is going into second grade this year and I think he's just about ready to play his first pokémon game. I just got our Wii U modded up so I've got a few options for him to try but I'm not really sure where he should start. From the little I know about the series, gen 1 games seem a little obtuse and cryptic for a second grader. Any better suggestions?

Awesome, Levi! Ruby and Sapphire came out when I was around that age, so it felt like the Golden Era of Pokémon for me. 😂 I would honestly say, though, that Fire Red/Leaf Green would be great starting points for him! Being remakes of the originals, they still that classic Gen 1 foundation, but their updates have made them age considerably better. Just in general, I feel like Gen 3 struck this nice balance between the simplicity of early Pokémon and the complex layers of the later games. As a follow-up, I’d highly recommend Heart Gold/Soul Silver. Best remakes of some of the best Pokémon games!
Alternatively, there’s always Let’s Go on Switch, which was designed as a simple remake of Gen 1 specifically to ease new players into the series. People have mixed thoughts about Let’s Go, but I actually thought it was great!
So special that you’re getting to share these memories with your son, man. I don’t have kids yet, but I’m looking forward to sharing the special parts of my childhood with them, too.
