Another excellent video! I didn't play this game until college. I wish I had played this as a kid in the way I played Mario 64, but even so I'm glad I got to play it at all. I knew this video was going to be a passionate one for you, and you did a great job!

Bro thank you so much! It really was a special episode for me, so I’m glad you liked it! Also, I know some of my love for this game comes from nostalgia, so I can imagine it probably felt dated experiencing it for the first time when we were in college. So cool to see how it’s held up, regardless, though.
Thanks again, CJ. Love you man!

Imagine if BotW was top down. 😂
For real tho, I hope Nintendo keeps the top-down style alive going forward. I like the idea of having like 2 branches of Zelda games, with BotW style as one and Link’s Awakening as the other.

Dude, I always get pumped when you put out a new Zelda video. I'm inspired.
    * † *
Time, like a stream, never ends, never stops,
It ebbs and flows, it speeds and slows,
Each moment we taste, a drop.
Each drop joins the whole, a river takes shape,
For each, it varies, as each it carries,
Its course, no man can escape.
Deep fountains loft time from Din's red earth,
    As it rises, it exorcises,
Man's form and gives him birth.
Drawn through the soil by Farore's roots,
Water and man, time and its span,
    Nourish her tender shoots.
As the clear water's surface mirrors growth,
Nayru's guiding hand justifies the land,
    Roots below and branches both.
Along each edge of the pedestal's blade,
Runs a silver cord, where seven years are stored,
    A boyhood too long delayed.
For the flow of time is always cruel,
    Child protected and child neglected,
Both drown in the temporal pool.

I guess you need nostalgia for this game, because if you ask me it's the worst Zelda game no contest. Up until OOT, Zelda had been in large part about making your own adventure with the original possibly being the first open world game. Even when LTTP and LA added some structure, you still were probably going to wander a bit and find some items a little before you need them. Then OOT you mostly have wide hallways and if you start to venture off path you almost immediately get pushed back onto the ride or find things you can't get for a long time so eventually you don't even want to explore anymore. The cleanup stage feels open and gives you that sense of adventure, but otherwise it's very railroady and also after you finish the tour and have been everywhere. It's the main gripe I have with Metroid Dread too, it looks and sounds open on paper, but it feels like you are being forced along with no choice in the matter until end game unless you do kaizo stuff to escape. They are good games, just not very good Zelda or Metroid games; kind of the antithesis actually.

Thanks for watching, man! I was looking forward to hearing your thoughts! I definitely have a TON of nostalgia for this game, and that emotional side I think will always be a part of how I view this game.
I definitely hear what you’re saying, and I agree that the linear, almost “on-rails” element of the 3D titles (before BotW) doesn’t really live up to the true potential of Zelda that we saw in TLoZ and ALttP. Aside from that and aside from my nostalgia, though, I do genuinely have so much respect for how this game boldly took on 3D with virtually no prior examples to follow. I don’t think Zelda would be what it is today without OoT, for better and for worse.
I’m also the guy that loves returning to games like Phantom Hourglass, though. Zelda has always been pure magic to me, and while not every game in the series hits me quite as strongly, I actually think the vastly unique identity of each game is part of what makes me love them so much. We have OoT, but we also have ALttP, MM, the Oracle games, and BotW. This is most definitely not a perfect game, but it’s a special adventure for me, nonetheless.

@@GamesAreCreative I definitely have my nostalgic games too, but it's just a weird feeling to be the only one who thinks it doesn't work as a Zelda game.
Have you ever played Okami? It's more like what I expected OoT would be like. It is super linear too at least in the broad, structural sense, but the areas are typically massive and full of things you can do on first visit even if its mostly just finding and blooming trees for exp, and then a few things you need later brush skills for. Even the dungeons often have little secret areas or shortcuts to reward exploration and experimentation.
If you've not played it, I recommend you push it to the top of your wishlist. Story A+, Combat A, Music A, Graphics A+, Exploration A+, Dungeons A

I haven’t played Okami yet, but I really want to! I’ve just never gotten around to it, but it’s on my watch list for eshop sales. 😂 The art style alone looks gorgeous, and I’ve heard it feels like a love letter to Zelda too!
