I hear ya! Definitely deserves more credit than it gets. I was absolutely floored going back and playing it for the channel because of how ahead of it's time it was. Really great!
As someone who’s around a decade younger than you, New Super Mario Bros. Wii was my first Mario game, and second true video game after Wii Sports. As a result it’s my favorite, in the same way World is your favorite. On the topic of World too, I’d actually rank it quite low due to how sensitive the controls are. Mario has *too much* air control in World compared to nearly every other Mario game, and it throws me off to the point where I very often overcorrect a jump and end up undershooting platforms a lot. Super Mario World’s big connected world was also something I didn’t really find that incredible, I rather prefer the large variety of locales in Wii’s worlds. It’s really quite interesting how different individual rankings can be because of the times one grew up in.
I will put Land over Lost Levels and NSMB2 easily just for the soundtrack alone. But I honestly agree so much with a lot of this list, and I appreciate how fair you were.
Ok, no raging required! I'm really just glad you didn't pull an IGN-like move of putting the original at number one just because it was the original, I think you placed it correctly. IMO an argument could definitely be made for 3 being the best 2D Mario game, but without a doubt those top two are the top two. I was a bit surprised to see 6 Golden Coins that high, but after thinking about it I can't really make an argument for any of the others going higher. I would actually love Nintendo to give that game a similar treatment that they gave Link's Awakening!
Haha for sure. I definitely expected it to be a toss-up between SMB3 and SMW, at least when it comes to my personal favorites, but after playing through these again for the channel, I was actually most surprised by how freaking incredible 6 Golden Coins is. I totally agree, an HD update for that game would be awesome!
