Colorado's Best Fly Fishing: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Josh and I returned to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado to fly fish on the Gunnison River. The Gold Metal Waters are filled with wild trout and the stunning canyon walls make for the best fly fishing back drop we could ask for. This is our second time at this world-class fly fishing destination, but you don't get to fish without putting in a lot of effort to descend into the depths of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The hiking is extremely rugged and you work for every cast. We had hoped to fly fish in the canyon during the salmon fly hatch, but we ended up being about a week early. The Colorado fly fishing was still fantastic and we are already planning our next t...

Boulder Skyline Traverse: 18 miles, 6,100' of gain
Просмотров 723Месяц назад
Last weekend I celebrated my birthday by hiking the Boulder Skyline Traverse. Last time I did this hike was in March of 2022 as preparation for the Continental Divide Trail and it was super interesting comparing how I felt last time to this time. The Boulder Skyline Traverse crosses 5 peaks that make up the Boulder Skyline: South Boulder Peak, Bear Peak, Green Mountain, Flagstaff Mountain and M...
How A Wilderness First Responder Course Changed my First Aid Kit
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Месяц назад
I finally took a Wilderness First Responder course and got my Wilderness First Responder certification. I was super curious to see how this course affected the things I decide to bring into the backcountry and, specifically, how my backpacking first aid kit would change. After the course, I was pretty proud of some of the things I was already including, and decided to add and optimize some item...

Backpacking in Canyonlands National Park: Needles District
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Месяц назад
I escaped mud season in the mountains to take a backcountry navigation course and go backpacking with a long time friend in Canyonlands National Park. For my course, I was lucky to do the Chesler Par Loop, and for fun, I was lucky to string together several trails in the backcountry of the Needles District. Water in the desert is scarce (read nonexistent on this trip), which made for a challeng...

Please test out menstrual disc! That might work better than a cup for many. For me it was a life changer
Very true and it's just as good at home.
Benchmark Ranch, Montana was a happy box.
@@CynthiaOlsen-i9n that’s a good one if you don’t go into Augusta! We didn’t want to deal with the logistics there and ended up being happy for the town stop.
Very nice!
Great curation of info. Well done. +1 for toothpaste tablets. I use a buff as a buff and a sleep mask Leaving extra clothing at home is a game changer, too.
good to know you like the tablets!! Great tips :)
Super lame that you're sharing this.
@@ctunaj5 oh honey, it’s a NATIONAL PARK. Do some research about the place. It’s permitted and an extremely difficult hike. I didn’t even share the route we did.
@@eliseott I've been going there for 25 years. It gets busier every year because of people like you.
I'm not big on bloviating about particular brands especially clothing but the Outdoor Research Ferrosi pant is legs down the best article of clothing my lower torso has ever had the pleasure of donning. (They make a convertible version too if you must have the shorts) Fit, feel, weight, durability, flexibility with a 4 way stretch and a light water resistant coating. Can't beat em, and they adapt admirably in the civilian world. Grassy to classy
I love the Black Canyon. I've done this trail for the Salmon Fly hatch and the SOB. I believe the SOB is actually a bit steeper and felt a little bit like visiting Shangri-la to me. That trip was in the fall so we just cowboy camped at the bottom. Timing the salmon fly hatch is difficult. I usually hit the Colorado River for that. Congrats on monsters you caught.
If we were closer we would have gone back down the next weekend but it's a bit of a drive from us unfortunately. Is the SOB one of the other routes in the canyon? (i'm not familiar). thank you!!
I know this is off-topic, but does everyone put “not good” when the ad tells you how your experienced of ads were.
lol as someone who worked in advertising this is exactly why I no longer want to hhahah
I always wanted how people who worked in advertisement thought about ads
These are always so on point, thank you.
I would love to travel and climb, alas I fucked off in school and now I’m in construction 😂
Pays better then most jobs, but just plan it out like 2 months ahead so you have time to put in a notice
If you have a pack-liner i use a gallon freezer ziploc bags for organizing my clothes and lighting gear, fire kit, water treatment systems, etc. put everything you need to keep dry and organized use different ziplock bag’s. Write whats in the bags in posca red bright pen. Write in big letters whats in each bag and organization. Make list of where everything is packed in layers in your hiking bag. A gallon ziploc bag weights 0.31oz. Ditch stuff bags and use ziploc bags with the attached zippers
Loved this trip vid! So fun to watch!!
Beautiful rainbow. Love the video
Beautiful catch
Great catch!
thanks!!
I live for that moment.❤
totally
Dude why the catch and release that’s some good ass eating man
Big and healthy trout that live in river systems, and other big and healthy fish, are generally the spawners in the ecosystem. They are super important to the overall health of the biomass within the river. To kill a fish this big is pretty irresponsible.
yeo, what Noah said! Also this area is a Gold Medal stream, which means catch and releas only!
Looks like a great trip! On my list to do!
it's fantastic!!
Catching hogs!!!
HOGS
EPIC trip! Good work out of you two. LOVING this kind of content! Do you guys ever Euro-nymph? Looks like LOTS of great euro-nymphing water down there. 👍🏾
thanks so much!! I have once with a friend's rod! And Josh has a few times as well! I feel like I'm just getting the hang of fly fishing so maybe in a year or two I'll dive into it more haha.
Umm. I've been living and flyfishing in Idaho for thirty years and I've never had a day like that. My God. Well done. Also, landing all those pigs in that big water was solid. Some incredible rainbows!
I feel very spoiled!! Thank you! They are beautiful fish!
I don’t think I’ve ever been more jealous in my life. Nice work! Please consider a Fly Fishing setup video. You know you can Fly Fish Yellowstone…(bring bear spray)
I feel very lucky and spoiled for sure! thank you! I definitely have that on the list! Although, my setup is pretty basic. Yellowstone would be super fun! I plan to fish a bit in the Tetons hopefully this summer.
Beauty fish! Unreal
Just out there doing it! Good job great video. Ten
Thanks so much!
How that is some stunning scenery!
It's SO pretty down there.
I'm not much of a fisherman but that looked like a good weekend. When you said "Montrose' it brought back memories from there about 45 years ago. The strangest night of my life. Thanks for the upload. They make my day.
I wasn't either honestly before Josh got me into it! Thanks so much for watching :) And now you've got me curious about Montrose haha
@@eliseott The evening started in a downtown establishment called The Office. In the space of an hour we had 2 tables destroyed by fights literally landing on them. Both fights were broken up by a small, 55 0r 60 yo lady who was running the place and had zero hesitation in getting in the middle of things. While that was semi-dramatic, the weirdness started after we left. Those stories are for another forum, however.
You hooked into some MUTANTS! Looks like an awesome trip and fun new tradition.
SERIOUSLY! I was gonna be happy with 1, but it ended up being 2-3!
I had to ditch my condoms. They weight too much.
I would still recommend rain cover instead of plastic bags. Because if you dont use a rain cover, your bag will observe rain water making it heavier.
it depends on the backpack you have for sure! I'd probably do both if i had a pack that absorbed water.
Yes! The Pacific Crest trail spans through the west coast and into Mexico, it’s about 2,700 miles and some people will no shit do that start to finish. It takes MONTHS but it is so beautiful, albeit slightly dangerous so always pack heat lmao
yes this was made from experience on that trail and the CDT! I did not carry while on that hike though (unless you count pepper spray)
You should do a snotrocket tutorial!
ummm i LOVE this idea!!!!! adding it to the list haha thank you
😂😂😂
Emma Coburn trains at elevation in Crested Butte and she an Olympian that mops the floor with her sea level competition. So good for you training high.
On a three day hike a couple of years ago, I met a man who was drinking his tea from his favourite china tea cup. When I asked him why he would bring such a thing, he replied, "because his tea tasted better and so the extra weight and fragility didn't matter". Another man on the same hike brought along his espresso coffee making gear. His reasoning was that it made his start to the day better, so it was worth the extra weight. These men have taught me that if something makes your journey better and you're willing to carry it, then it simply doesn't matter if it increases your gear base weight, and it doesn't matter what anyone thinks. I now take a jet boil minimo as well as a jet boil skillet because I like to have better meals. Simple. No further justification needed.
Absolutely bring your luxuries if that's what makes you happy :)
I'm so glad this lady makes videos. These narrated ones are some of my favorite.
You have no idea how much I needed to hear that these last few weeks - thank you!
Awesome B day hike! I love chipmunks and naps! Josh taking a nap makes him a wiseman … love the hat that you’re wearing…. I’ve never seen anything like that, it’s like a cross of a visor and a baseball cap, I know it’s a ladies hat, but super cool! Do you have a link for the hat? Thanks for sharing.
thank you!! And yes, I can't blame him. It's from Under Armour and that's exactly why I got it. I wanted something that would let me have my hair up high (like a visor) but still cover my scalp. It's kind of goofy but it's very functional haha. this is it: amzn.to/4522qEi
@@eliseott goofy? No way, lets call it innovative. I've certainly never seen anything like it, goofy, would be if I wore it with my hi pony - you pull it off well, me, not so much!
Hoping to do this soon, to prep for some longer 14ers this year. Have done all the segments multiple times, so I'm really looking forward to linking it all up for an epic day. Good video!
It's super fun to string them all together when you've done the sections!! It's a great training hike.
Man, videos like this sure make me miss the Southwest. On the brighter side, I got the first like on this one!
Thank you!!
I feel like I’d try doing something like this and end up on a 20/20 episode
I hope not!!
I have epilepsy so I have couple of 10 mg diazepam pills in my kit. One tablet should be enough to stop an attack. Afterwards one should replenish electrolytes, which I recommend that you have as a hiker in your kit too
Nice, I always try to talk to hiking partners about any Rx meds they take just in case. And will be more diligent about it post-WFR. Good to know about electrolytes as after care! I do always have those with me!
I imagined how I would wave and smile to the hiker I meet. And now, I'm completely self-conscious.
don't be we all do it and it's polite!
That's kindness
Its essentially "im not gonna try to kill you"
yes, or "please don't kill me"
It's polite! I wish people and dogs a good hike.
yes same!!
Same!! Expect it in return if we ever meet on trail my friend 😄
you got it!!
it’s not dumb 😊
you know what? you're right.
So true but if I see you on trail I’m gonna ask for a hug, a selfie and autograph just so your aware
hahahah will gladly take selfies and hugs!! not sure my autograph is worth anything but I'm flattered.
Ain't going lie she pretty cute tho definitely would hit 😂😜
