  • Welcome back to backpacking sucks! This is part FIVE of my backpacking sucks series and this is IT for now. I’ve had a lot of fun with this though and I hope the true message - that we can overcome adversity - is clear throughout this series. In this installment, I’m talking about how some of the mental aspects of backpacking can be super tough. This is the second video talking about some of the sucky mental aspects of backpacking becuase I didn't want to make the first one 30 minutes long. In this one, we're talking about dealing with exhaustion while backpacking (an inherently exhausting activity), how to deal with boredom and loneliness while backpacking (although one of my favorite parts it can get to you sometimes), and how to deal with elitists of the backpacking world. I go on a little rant that's been brewing for awhile and I hope it resonates with some of you.

I like this woman a little more every video. I'm glad I found her and wish I had neighbors like her.

Heat exhaustion or heat stroke is no joke, and is more common than most people know

100% I just finished my WFR and realized how many times I've probably had heat exhaustion...kinda scary.

Best show on RUclips! Always dealing with trying to figure out how/what to eat while on trail.

It's a struggle!! I'm thinking I need to do a recipe video soon. And hopefully source even more recipes from the comments!

WOW, this is good! The part about Elitists is so accurate and the way you describe the 'identity' attached to it is so refreshing. Thanks!

I especially liked the second part, which is easily transfered to - everything! Be nice, be tolerant, be inclusive, and you'll grow and allow growth. ❤

Great series! I love the topics you discussed and your approaches that you shared. These are subjects most people don’t talk about, but should. Thanks, Sauce!

Backpacking can be super fun with other likeminded travelers. Hiking alone gets lonely and boring fast, but hitchhiking can be great

Totally! A little variety is where it's at I think.

The “elitist” part really is so important to stress - something like “UL Backpacking” is definitely another place where you see this a lot - the 10lb in/out club (and i say this as someone running a 17.000 members danish UL Facebook group) UL (and hiking in general) and sharing about it on social media is for me all about inspiring others to get out in the best possible Way for Them - if that means flip flopping, carrying a Camp chair, or what might fill their needs and wants - Well great :)

YES YES YES! Glad it resonated with you. I feel very similarly. It's super fun to chat gear and cutting pack weight but never at the expense of making someone feel bad about having a heavier pack.

Smart and gutsy for you to call out elitist. I wonder if I have fallen into that group?. The sawyer is the only water filter. No one should wear boots. Etc.. Hmmmm. Thanks.

I think I'm unintentionally guilty of it as well. But I think as long as you are typically leading with kindness people will understand your intention.

You are going to miss something at 4mph instead of 2mph? At 10 hours per day, lots of 20 miles per day hikers. Not so many 40 mile per day hikers. I don't really think you are going to miss a thing that your goD made. Thank you. Please bee sweet and have a nice day.
