  • Thru-hiking as a couple is a huge privilege. It’s incredibly hard to get someone to join you on a backpacking trip, let alone a multi-month, several thousand mile excursion! But thru-hiking as a couple also brings its own set of challenges. Being a couple in regular day-to-day life is one thing, thru-hiking as a couple is often a whole new challenge. As someone who has thru-hiked solo and also thru-hiked with my significant other, I wanted to provide some insight on what has (or hasn’t) worked well for us.
    This video will go over some of my tips for backpacking or thru-hiking as a couple, as always, take what works for YOU and leave what doesn’t.

    I wouldn't have thought you would both carry your own gear. But I think that is more understandable since you both started off doing thru hikes as solo backpackers.

      yeah I think that definitely influenced it. We talked about combining a few times, but it just works better for us!

    Meanwhile my husband and I got the EE double quilt 😂,I must say we also met on trail, but we are taking advantage of sharing so we can bring more comfort; and not caring so much about the weight. Also I must say we are doing more mountaineering so gear needs to change a lot

      It's all about whatever works for you! I imagine you are sticking together more with mountaineering so the worry of getting separated and not having gear you need isn't as high. Thanks for sharing!

    Sorry ahead of time for the rather large post lol...
    Hello mam..just wanted to I'm really enjoying your content...I like the chill vibes you emit...so its a dream of mine to one day hike a decent size trail..
    I'm glad you mentioned creating an emergency plan.. you might have just saved a few people..
    I'm sure all of us have heard about those not-so-nice lol stories involving people whose hiking partner gets injured...And they have no clue what to do...
    On that happy note lol thank you for the advice and wisdom...

      Is there a gps device that you prefer?

      woohoo!! that's so exciting! Josh and I both use the garmin inreach mini (they have a newer version out as well, the garmin inreach mini 2, but I don't feel like you need the 2): amzn.to/3Fp0p9e (here's a link but also, I bought mine refurbished off of ebay and it works great!).
      I've also heard good things about the zoleo: amzn.to/3FmBUcR, biggest difference is the zoleo is about 5.3 oz. while the inreach mini is 3.5. The zoleo also doesn't have a screen. You connect to it with bluetooth to text, etc. This is also probably the best way to use the mini.
      Basically if you spend a little more on the inreach you get a little lighter weight and backup screen in case something happens to your phone. But both are good options!

    Super helpful tips! Super happy to know I’m not crazy, to not share gear. Obviously be helpful to each other… but to say having only one set of everything is kind of too much to ask I think.

      not crazy at all! I think it's safer and less stressful to have your own stuff.

    this was super useful! gonna be hiking the pct with my partner this year so definitely helpful to think about these things. Was also curious about your food/resupply, did you both eat very differently or did you sometimes share larger boxes of stuff? thanks!

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  6 месяцев назад

      yay! so glad it was useful for you! and yay for PCT with your partner!! We eat some things that overlap and totally share larger boxes when that's the case. Ex: if we both want some clif bars we will buy in bulk and split it. One thing I wish he would eat that I always have to buy too much of is powdered milk (ha) but usually there's another hiker around to split that with too. Or worst case I can donate it to the hiker box.

    Thanks for this video. I’ve always been curious how you know where you’ll sleep at night and find your partner after walking alone throughout the day? Or is that just a matter of sharing cords via the garmin?

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  5 месяцев назад

      We usually talk about it in the morning what our goal is for the day (or the night before)! If that changes then we'll communicate through garmin but that's usually just for the rare occasion when plans change and we haven't run into each other for updates.

    Regarding food, do you recommend that each person have their own dinner with them so if they got separated for a night, each person would still have their own food?

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  6 месяцев назад

      absolutely! we each carry our own food. One missed dinner won't kill you, but I wouldn't want to go without it for sure haha.
