  • Today’s video is all about safety tips for hitchhiking as a solo woman. I know the idea of solo hitchhiking is intimidating, especially when we are constantly told how dangerous it is, but there are a few ways you can make solo hitchhiking as a woman a little bit safer. And men, some of these tips might work for you too! I also want to acknowledge that there are certainly different considerations for women of color and trans women that I don’t have firsthand experience with, so please take what works for you from this video and leave what doesn’t.
If you have any hitchhiking safety tips for women (specifically in a thru-hiking context) feel free to leave them in the comments, but PLEASE everyone refrain from fear mongering women out of solo backpacking. We are told often enough how dangerous doing anything solo, let alone hitchhiking, can be. We know. I’m here to help mitigate some of those fears and provide tips for hitchhiking as safely as possible as a solo woman.
Remember, if you want to thru-hike and you’re a solo woman, don’t let fear get in the way. You are capable and can make things safer with the right knowledge. You also can absolutely thru-hike and avoid solo hitchhiking all together, which I’ll also talk about in this video.

I love that you covered a topic that typically isn’t addressed. It’s all very sound, logical, thoughtful advice and I thank you for looking out for us fellow female hikers.

thank you!! I try to, it was other women I followed who encouraged me to get into thru-hiking and I just hope to do the same for others.

Another amazing video! I've personally used many of them as I solo hitched a lot on my AT thru hike. I found that taking the pic of the license plate and sending it to someone a very comforting thing. I also have found that I feel safer when there are multiple people in the vehicle: a couple, kids, even a dog. Or if the person is older (70+). Thank you for all those tips!

thank you so much!! I love that you've used these too and can vouch for it. A hitch with a dog is ALWAYS better, and the older folks are always so supportive too. Thanks for watching!

Might be a bit late but which satellite communicator did you use on your journey and which one would you recommend to a beginner? 🤔💙

I've used a garmin inreach explorere and a garm inreach mini! I would recommend the garm inreach mini or a zoleo! Both are smaller and lightweight, allow texting, and have an SOS feature (the most important piece imo). The zoleo is a bit more affordable too.
