  • How much I made my first year monetized on youtube! When I first started going down the content creation rabbit hole, I always found these videos super interesting. As some of you may know, my obsession with backpacking closely rivals my obsession with personal finance, so I thought this would be a fun video to make. I also think telling you how much I made my first year monetized on youtube, might help shed some light on what goes into running a backpacking youtube channel.
This video goes over youtube monetization requirements, how youtube monetization works, and how much I made during my first year monetized on youtube (including my highest earning videos).
If you’d prefer to see all of this written out, I also wrote a blog on my site about how much I made my first year monetized on youtube:
    www.eliseott.com/backpacking-finances/how-much-i-made-my-first-year-monetized-on-youtube
What I use to make my videos:
    Epidemic Sound (for music): www.epidemicsound.com/referra...
    DJI Osmo Pocket 2: amzn.to/45H83qC
    Rode Video Microphone: amzn.to/3EM5rgN

If you’d like to support my channel financially, I’m super appreciative and the easiest way to do that is through Venmo: @eliseott or PayPal: eliseottcreative@gmail.com. However, a like and subscribe is more than enough support - thanks so much for being here!

Yes, RUclips is not the cash cow some might think it is. Gear videos do very well. I think my AT gear video got around 11k views within the first couple of months. Of course that means about $1.75 in income.

Yep, it's much better than other platforms but I think it can create sort of an illusion that it's a ton of money (and maybe for some it is, I'm just starting out!) but definitely more of a "for fun" thing for now haha.

Watching your CDT series was a big help for me when preparing for my (successful) 2023 CDT through hike. You cover a lot of great topics on your channel, and I have no doubt your channel will continue to grow. I just was able to apply for my '24 PCT permit yesterday which would wrap up my Triple Crown!

THIS IS SO COOL! That is my dream!! Congrats on your thru!! And YAY FOR TRIPLE!! the PCT is the BEST you are going to crush it after the AT and CDT.

Thank you so so much for your transparency on this topic! I have not come across a RUclips income video in the hiking/backpacking niche, so this was incredibly helpful and enlightening…
Especially since I just started my own hiking/travel channel and this gives me insight on potentially what to expect. It’s interesting to know that the gear videos generated the most money. Subscribed!

I don't think I have either! I get that the transparency can be uncomfortable but I've always found it helpful and also I think being into the FIRE space has helped me get more used to it. And yes the gear videos are the way to go if you're looking for growth I think! Thanks for being here!

Thank you so much!! I'm a freelance writer (mostly working in advertising but trying to shift a bit to more outdoor industry stuff). I used to live in Atlanta, I loved it there, but I live in Colorado now.

@@eliseott that’s great! Good move! Best of luck to you! I’m a designer for a Landscape Architect
Spent decades in golf/landscape design out in the field, now in the office…. So one day I hope to get out of Florida…. And work remotely. Maybe my experience could work for National Parks Service?
