- How much I made my first year monetized on youtube! When I first started going down the content creation rabbit hole, I always found these videos super interesting. As some of you may know, my obsession with backpacking closely rivals my obsession with personal finance, so I thought this would be a fun video to make. I also think telling you how much I made my first year monetized on youtube, might help shed some light on what goes into running a backpacking youtube channel.
This video goes over youtube monetization requirements, how youtube monetization works, and how much I made during my first year monetized on youtube (including my highest earning videos).
If you’d prefer to see all of this written out, I also wrote a blog on my site about how much I made my first year monetized on youtube:

Yes, RUclips is not the cash cow some might think it is. Gear videos do very well. I think my AT gear video got around 11k views within the first couple of months. Of course that means about $1.75 in income.
Yep, it's much better than other platforms but I think it can create sort of an illusion that it's a ton of money (and maybe for some it is, I'm just starting out!) but definitely more of a "for fun" thing for now haha.
Watching your CDT series was a big help for me when preparing for my (successful) 2023 CDT through hike. You cover a lot of great topics on your channel, and I have no doubt your channel will continue to grow. I just was able to apply for my '24 PCT permit yesterday which would wrap up my Triple Crown!
THIS IS SO COOL! That is my dream!! Congrats on your thru!! And YAY FOR TRIPLE!! the PCT is the BEST you are going to crush it after the AT and CDT.
Appreciate you sharing your real numbers and giving us a realistic view of the creator experience!
happy to do so! thank you!
Thanks for making this! I’m so close and have been curious as a backpacking channel. Iv noticed gear get much more attention but I love making trail videos personally! So making sure I have a balance to keep it fun for me too 😊. Thanks again!
Yay I'm so glad it was helpful! And yes the gear reviews I think can be a good tool for getting people to you channel, then post what lights you up!
Really interesting perspective! Thanks for sharing 👍 Everyone loves a good gear video ha

SOS thanks for this video. That’s interesting. I love your energy and content
thank you so much!!
Love your content. I particularly enjoy and appreciate your recent videos that are more hiking/backpacking advice. So helpful for newbie backpackers!
thank you!! that's definitely my main goal is to inspire and educate for people like me who may not know what to do when starting out!
Thank you so so much for your transparency on this topic! I have not come across a RUclips income video in the hiking/backpacking niche, so this was incredibly helpful and enlightening…
Especially since I just started my own hiking/travel channel and this gives me insight on potentially what to expect. It’s interesting to know that the gear videos generated the most money. Subscribed!
I don't think I have either! I get that the transparency can be uncomfortable but I've always found it helpful and also I think being into the FIRE space has helped me get more used to it. And yes the gear videos are the way to go if you're looking for growth I think! Thanks for being here!
Thanks for sharing Elise! Wishing you more success for 2024!!!
thank you so much :)
Love your videos Elise, and as a FIRE follower myself, always appreciate the monetary breakdowns.
thank you so much! and yes a fellow FIRE nerd!! Thanks for being here :)
Love all of your videos, SOS. Sticking around and super excited for your adventures in 2024.

I do love the gear videos! ❤️
they're fun to make too!
God bless you. Much success in 2024.
thank you so much!
You're a great communicator! Thanks for sharing! That is a lot of work for 800.00$ I do love your gear reviews, I've been sharing them with my wife. What do you do for your 'real' job? Arent you a resident of Atlanta?
Thank you so much!! I'm a freelance writer (mostly working in advertising but trying to shift a bit to more outdoor industry stuff). I used to live in Atlanta, I loved it there, but I live in Colorado now.
@@eliseott that’s great! Good move! Best of luck to you! I’m a designer for a Landscape Architect
Spent decades in golf/landscape design out in the field, now in the office…. So one day I hope to get out of Florida…. And work remotely. Maybe my experience could work for National Parks Service?
Yeah RUclips monetization is a whole can of worms :) Looking forward to your 2024 content!
truly! much better than other platforms it seems though (besides maybe tik tok?)
Nobody does jungle camping , which takes camping to a whole new level. I’ve never seen a jungle camping vid
ooh interesting. If I ever make it to some jungles, I'll have to try!
Thanks!
THANK YOU!
