  • One of the most common follow up questions I get from close friends when talking about my thru-hikes is, “what do you do about your period while backpacking?” And I assume many others have this question as well even though they may not be bold enough to ask it. Dealing with periods and birth control while thru-hiking or backpacking can be a very personal topic that varies quite a bit by person, so I just wanted to share what I do, and what I’ve seen work for others, in hopes that it helps a thru-hiking or backpacking hopeful who isn’t quite sure how to deal with that time of the month on an extended backpacking trip.
If you have any extra tips for dealing with a period or using birth control while backpacking or thru-hiking please leave them in the comments so we can all learn from each other!

Thanks for the video! I once didn't bring supplies along for a segment of a trail and i ended up using a pair of underwear and an arch support! I was unable to use tampons that others offered me. I was never so glad to see the van at the trailhead. Always bring extras off whatever works for you!

This upcoming summer will be my first off BC, so I really appreciate all of the tips and recommendations. I'm eager to try a cup and maybe make a combo of solutions for longer trips. Thank you!

I’ve been loving your videos as I get ready for the PCT this coming year!
I use a cup and then actual use period underwear at night just for comfort and one less step in the morning. My period has gotten lighter on month long hikes so I can usually reuse the underwear and haven’t leaked through it yet but my period is typically shorter on hikes as well, and I wash them in town
I’ve been off BC for over a year now too which I know is more of a privilege, Hope that’s helpful for someone

OMG that makes me so happy! so exciting!! This is a great way to use period underwear! I knew someone would prove me wrong hahah. Glad it works for you, and yes no birth control is totally an option if it works for peeps, thanks for sharing!

Please test out menstrual disc! That might work better than a cup for many. For me it was a life changer

I hike with only one spare pair of pants. That's has been 100 per cent successful in birth control.

Hahaha same. Unfortunately I still need it for medical reasons.
