My main interest is in the music of Elton John but I enjoy many artists and have been expanding my reviews to others, including Abba, Paul McCartney, Wings, The Beatles and Kate Bush. Other artists I intend to look at include The Beach Boys, Nick Drake, Natalie Merchant and Stevie Wonder.

Pinky is a beautiful song and my favorite track on the album.
Leave on? Um, it's LEVON.
I've done my top 34 before, and now I have to find where I left that list! But I want to compile a bunch of YT Elton Album rankings into a spreadsheet and come up with a final, definitive ranking from maybe 50-100 YT'ers. I think that'd be interesting. I'm an Elton Connoisseur - so these are my top 10 favorite albums. 1. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 2. Caribou (this album is SO underrated. The quirkiness and odd sequence of the album make it SHINE - and I LOVE Solar Prestige A Gammon! ALL the tracks are winners, and they take me back to my early childhood days listening to the album on 8-track while going to sleep at night. 3. Tumbleweed Connection 4. Captain Fantastic (the album title song is my FAVORITE SONG of ALL TIME, despite artist. Absolutely amazing!) 5. Made In England 6. Sleeping With the Past 7. Breaking Hearts 8. Honky Chateau 9. The Fox 10. The Captain & the Kid
Leather Jackets for me its his worst album, however, Im not agree with Elton about Heartache All Over The World. Its a very interesting song, so catchy, fun and enjoyable. So 80s, but I love the sound of that decade. I think its a very good song, for me the only good song in the album. Of course it isnt one of his best songs, its not a classic and its not so good as others, but I like it.
My list goes just like this: 1. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 2. Honky Château 3. Rock of the Westies 4. Caribou 5. Madman Across the Water
Good list, I'd probably bump Madman up to #3 and Tumbleweed at #2 and GBYBR at #1. Hard to really choose between them because they're all so good. Agree to put Victim of Love in last place. Our dear Elton John did not need to be singing disco cover songs and putting out entire albums of material that he had no part in writing. However, by 1979, I think Elton was feeling burnout and you can at least admire the attempt to keep things fresh and different as opposed to letting things get stale. I think even doing some writing with other lyricists was a good change of pace and it turned out to be only temporary. If anything, it helped both Elton and Bernie realize just what a special songwriting partnership they had.
I take 'White Lady, White Powder', to be anti-drug, not promoting them, in an ironic way. It's a much better song than you give it credit for.
Excellent job! Thank you for this list!
John, I think you were a bit harsh on this album. 3 tracks are worthy of 10 out of 10. TBIB, DLTSGDOM and Ticking. You’re so static, I’ve Seen the Saucers and Stinker are all worthy of an 8. And Solar Prestige .. illustrates the musical talent of EJ and BT. Ticking is a genuine classic.. up there with the likes of Hurricane by Bob Dylan. I agree that the production could have been better. Agree the cover was very tacky.
Yellow Brick Road would not make my top 10. It's bloated with plenty of filla songs and seriously, I don't need to hear grating songs like Candle In The Wind and the dreadful Benny & The Jets ever again!
I love this album! I bought the cassette tape in the summer of 1992 the first time I saw it at my local music store (I was 12!). In those pre-internet days, I had heard some rumblings about a new Elton album coming but had no idea exactly when, as he hadn’t put out any new material in over a year. I was so excited. I quickly took it home and listened and I loved it then and still love it now. The Last Song is beautiful, but it’s too sad so I have to be in the mood to listen to that one.
You ever heard of Sara Vaughn?
Thanks doe review. An average album of covers - Credit to Elton taking risks with new/ emerging artists. Not a patch on Two Rooms album from early 1990s.
DIM released this 12’ `and 10 7” singles (separately and in a box) in 1978 - exploiting their access to Elton’s back catalogue. You may recall by 1978 had left DJM (1976). At the time 12” singles were coming to prominence. Nothing new musically only the art work on each record. Most of Elton’s 12’ singles were released in 1980s.. sadly with no significant remix or extension - just jumping on the trend.
I bought the album when it was released, have a soft spot for it and I still think it’s a great album! The 2 albums before this were much stronger!
We got a lot of radio play of "Honky Cat" in the U.S. and no radio play of "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" that I can remember. Honky Cat stuck with me my whole life, like Crocodile Rock a #1 hit in the U.S. Also Daniel was a #2 hit.
What is so sad about Johnny B Goode is that Michael J. Fox did it better in the movie "Back to the Future."
I actually had some fond memories of the entire Victim of Love album. I got it on CD in about 1991 when I was 11, and I was intrigued because it was an Elton album that really no one seemed to know about or have any familiarity with, so it was like I was discovering a treasure trove of new music that wasn’t easy to find by the early 90s. I listened to it quite a bit, and I still have it, but it wasn’t until later that I realized that Elton John singing disco songs that he didn’t write or play on was just wrong and an abomination. He didn’t seem to be having much fun singing the material, and Johnny B Goode is just a half-hearted rendition. For all but the most dedicated fans, Victim of Love can be skipped entirely.
@@GroovyMurdock I would not willingly listen to Victim of Love. Elton was in a bad place when he did that album. He should not sell any more copies of it. He's too talented to do that kind of crap. I would rather listen to his cover versions of pop songs from 1970s, he at least had fun doing those songs like "Spirit In The Sky" and "Superstition" and "In The Summertime" etc.
A real significant difference between Rock of the Westies and the Captain Fantastic album. I honestly enjoy ROTW much more than it's predecessor especially the tracks Dan Dare and Billy Bones. I still play this album in it's entirety monthly.
Hello my friend. If I sent you a similar comment, 😮 I don't remember. I enjoy watching all of your reviews and agree with almost all of them. Hope you give new reviews some. Peace and safety. 👍
Carla is the name of Clive Franks wife.
Great and intelligent review, Mark Ribot and Tom, you can't beat that.
My top 20 Elton's 80s songs: 20. Saint 19. Blue Eyes 18. Empty Garden 17. Sad Songs 16. Nikita 15. I Never Knew Her Name 14. Cold As Christmas 13. Give Me The Love 12. Crystal 11. I Guess Thats Why They Call It The Blues 10. White Lady White Powder 9. Healing Hands 8. Nobody Wins 7. One More Arrow 6. Sacrifice 5. Durban Deep 4. Who Wears This Shoes? 3. Spiteful Child 2. Kiss The Bride 1. Im Still Standing
Hi John, I differ with you greatly. This is easily a 9/10 album for me - full of lyrical and musical depth, beautifully sung and played, subtle and imaginative. Quicksand and Oscar Wilde, 10/10. It is up there with Elton's and Bernie's very best!
Hello my friend. First time commenting. I have watched lots of your reviews. I think your taste is similar to mine. My 1st was Caribou, I listened to my sister's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I like A Single Man plus all. Thank you for your reviews. 👍
Take Me Back is a cute little tune, always liked his country stuff. also- Dear God is simple, honest and sweet, you know ? But , as an Elton freak at the time , I needed this album ! Even Elton said "this is more of what elton john is about" Little Jeanie" sweet , pretty , soulful . Saw that tour- Fri. Oct !0 -1980.
Okay, you lost me be saying "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" is a great pop song. I think it's his worst song ever-by a landslide.
Elton's best album is (by far ) Victim of Love . Street Boogie,Baby ! ( probably the greatest tune I ever heard ) ( in my life, so far, on this here planet ) ( Baby) !
Let's just say we shouldn't have an Elton listening party.
I'm really impressed with how psychedelic and amazing this record is! I think I like it better than the Empty Sky album in all honesty! Great review John 💪🔥
Return to Paradise was at the end of one of the Chevy Chase Goldie Hawn movies, I believe. Your review of this album encouraged another listen. Great channel.
Wonderful Album
I always liked shoulder holster, but felt it was the weakest of the album.
I think people take this album too seriously. I think of it as a great action film . It doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's a lot of fun.
I’ve just caught on to your channel recently. I enjoy your videos. I definitely have different opinions on some songs as there’s a style of his l like more . But all your 10’s are definitely 10’s. The two that lost me are Bitter Fingers and especially Grimsby. Two songs I can’t crank loud enough. Not 10’s , but fun songs that just scream 70’s Elton Rock. Haven’t seen your final tally but look forward to getting to it. Cheers !
love the video Elton John did for Believe. Too bad, the critic never knew it was a similarity in sound to what Elton John & Bernie Taupin made from John Lennon's Imagine.
My first Elton John record, Made In England. I can't believe he didn't like this record. It is so overlooked because of The Lion King's success. A great throwback sound to Elton's 70's sound & a serene orchestration overall.
The album doesn't seem as enduring as some of Elton's others from the period, and especially Tumbleweed Connection. The feel on most songs is good, but there is a lack of depth. It is true about the lyrics. The album superficially sounds good, but i think it would have benefitted having more time spent on it. Of course, Rocket Man and Mona Lisa And Mad Hatters are the standouts. I particularly like Salvation and Slave, too.
This album isn't that well produced. That is its drawback. Its contents are impressive. I have no problem with the harpsicord, but the album needs a complete remix.
I thought that for Years…it’s needs IT DEFINITELY..
Discazo!!!!
When I think of a rock song by Elton John, the one that comes to mind is Li'l 'Frigerator.
I remember several different mixes of Act of War. I believe there was 4 mixes in all. I’ve not been able to find them anywhere.
I give this album nine out of ten…
Island girl. That song is so racist it always makes me laugh.
I loove this song. I was thinkinh that maybe monalisa,s and madhatters iis bernies poetic liiscense on hookers and pimps. Because mons lisa os a beautiful woman in profile whp is always wondered about and pimps dress flasy with weird clothes and hats in the 70s.
I love Spiteful Child, especially the piano at the beginning, its a great song.
I give this album five out of ten…
I rate this album ten out of ten…
I give this Album four out of ten…😏
I rate this album ten out of ten…
Love “Little Jeannie,” as Elton’s vocals are excellent. It’s the kind of song you might hear in a grocery store now, or a department store. Brings back memories of when that kind of sound that passed for “easy listening” or “adult contemporary” in the 80s was so prominent.
