This album was the soundtrack of my bus journey to school! Eltons voice in Susie (Dramas) is mental
Honky Chateau is a fine album, but not one of my favourites. Weirdly, I enjoy most of the songs on it individually, but somehow don't end up making this one a go-to.
I'm a bit skeptical about the supposed "demos" they're advertising. My impression of the sessions at the Chateau d'Hierouville for all three albums that were recorded there (Honky Chateau, Don't Shoot Me..., and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) were that Elton would get up early, write the songs until the band got down for breakfast, then the band would figure out their parts on the songs Elton had written, then they would go in and record them. Nowhere in that process were demos recorded. Listening to the "demo" of "Mellow" seems more like an alternate take with some studio chatter thrown in. That's cool to listen to, but if all these "demos" are like this, then the word "demo" is a misnomer.
I think the thing I'd be most interested in is the booklet. I would honestly prefer to be able to buy the book separately from the album so I don't have to re-purchase music I already own.
It’s gotta be one of Elton’s top 5; love that it’s basically just the musicians playing. No string arrangements $ Gus I think let’s the music speak for itself no overproduction. Totally look forward to getting it.
Honky Chateau is a fantastic album, every song is terrific . It's great news that a 50th Anniversary is coming out.
Thanks. Yes, a most welcome addition. A favourite song?
@@eltonmusicfan Mona Lisa & Mad Hatters , but I love them all John . It's the whole feel of the album that I love . The first one where the whole Elton John band kicks in .
Susie (Dramas) is a great car song, play it loud. The production and sound of the piano is great on this album. And his voice was so good back then
Agreed. I so much prefer the real grand piano sound, so great on Gybr and Caribou tracks like Ticking.
John, Honkey Chateau is a majestic album. IMO all songs are excellent, illustrating Elton’s range.. I see it as a cross over album from the previous 3 contemporary albums to subsequent 3 pop albums.
I've had the LP/cassette/CD (with bonus tracks) ever since the mid 70s. No. I'm not interested. It's one of my fave LPs from that era (Elton or others), but I'm not interested.
Might have to pass on this release, only because I'm kind of spoiled after the big box releases of Jewel Box and Madman, but March 24 happens to be my birthday so you never know, might have to buy myself a present, lol.
I think the double LP version is a bit bare bones, which could be an indication of how well the Super 4 LP Madman set sold. It has been mentioned the Honky set was rushed as Elton didn't think there was enough material for a super set, but that's hear say... That being said, I'm looking forward to the CD as I think they really gave us value by including album, demos and live concert all on two discs. I'm in it for the bonus material and if I'm going to buy the CD again, give me all the bells and whistles, which they have done.
The whole live version would be nice to have. I'm particularly pleased that it has a live version of Amy on it, which I really do hope is good. Not sure I've heard that live before. Otherwise would doubtless enjoy the demo's. I'm a little gutted that there wasn't anything else, some other demo or other, a song unknown to us before, to drag out of those session recordings, same with Madman, apart from Rock Me When He's Gone (which doesn't count as it's been available elsewhere, aside from the extended version).

I RATE THIS ALBUM NINE OUT OF TEN….
Its a great album. But it is an utter disgrace it was not treated to a proper deluxe edition, like Madman across the water. The demos should have been a separate cd to leave the original album intact. The edition should also have included the 5.1 surround from the SACD. Very disappponted that this is not up to Madman standard.
Agreed. I follow the Paul McCartney reissues which are brilliant box sets with four discs and books. We are only getting crumbs sometimes.
Great album, but this 50th anniversary is 1 year too late. They should be releasing the DONT Shoot Me and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 50th anniversary albums this year. I think I’m going to stick to my original vinyl copy
I can't wait for Don't Shoot Me which I think is a superior album. I would like several different versions of each song please to see how they changed before the final choice.
I think the 2014 remaster of GBYBR is awesome if they release a deluxe they wouldn’t have to remaster because it’s already remasterd.
Thanks John, I do have a soft spot for Honky Chateau and still play my original vinyl copy purchased in 1972 quite regularly. It is hard to believe that it was 50 years ago with 30 odd albums following and a lot of water flowing under the bridge since then. Looking forward to the release, think I will go for the C.D option this time and your review as usual.
I think this album at that time got the best rock critics reviews from all EJ seventies albums. Its my number two or three, voice and piano playing and sound are fantastic. No weak track, although I never really cared for Amy and Slave. But it has two of his greatest songs: Rocket Man and Mona Lisas. Love Salvation, Mellow and Suzie too.
Hi John, for me H C is the best recorded LP of Elton. I love the sound, the piano so smart, the right balance of every instruments. And Rocket man has been the very first Elton' s songs I ever heard ( I was in the car with my father and I fell in love with the Song immediately) . Thank's for the video and for remembering me that......we're still standing!!! Hi!
How good to remember the exact moment you heard Rocket Man first. It must have made quite an impression. The band sound is mighty good on this album though the songs lack consistency for me.
It's a fantastic album. I'm torn because Mona Lisas is one of the very best songs; while Rocket Man is one of the very worst. I'm not overly keen on the second disc, include a whole concert or a DVD of the Festival Hall performance or something aside from demos.
The live stuff was top quality on the seventies though. His voice and piano sound were amazing.
