I'm guessing the total claims would have exceed the funds the insurance company has. Thus bankrupt and those who qualify would recieve some 1 time payments from the government. Nearly all the big insurers have abandoned this market after m.j any nearly went bankrupt before. And without government help, many big names everyone knows would no longer exist at all. I believe in the last decade, something like 9 insurers folded in Florida. Currently, if you have insurance, you don't give it up. There's no one to replace them with.
I ALWAYS ask for a copy and to date have always been sent one Very often the adjusters (in the field) are honest hard-working individuals It is the corporate "desk jockeys" that are usually to blame When you have a copy of the correct amount, from a licensed adjuster, insurance companies are far more likely to pay
I had an automobile insurance adjuster come out and he was so friendly, he emailed me a copy of the final damage report. Months later when my own PIP insurance denied my daughters medical claim because they said there was only $650 worth of damage to the car, I was able to send my agent a copy of the damage report that showed it was over $10,000. Needless to say, they re-evaluated my daughter and extended her medical coverage another year. I always thought it was just an incompetent claims person, but after watching this video, I am thinking it may have been done on purpose. Crazy.

I had geico car insurance when I was hit at a red light. Despite the geico lawyer saying outright that the other driver was absolutely lying and the evidence proves it, I was still found at fault cuz the other driver had USAA veterans car insurance. He literally said Geico absolutely thinks it was 100% the other driver's fault but they had better lawyers and it was cheaper to pay them for them HITTING ME and increasing my monthly rate from $70 to $170 than to defend their client, me.
They caused that fraud!! They removed the Attorneys Fee Statute so lawyers cannot afford to represent homeowners properly. Now insurance companies can do what they want.
Thank 60 Minutes for covering this. This should be national news on blast constantly in every aspect until it is fixed for property insurance, health insurance and every other insurance.
But if customers make a false claim, it's insurance fraud and they go to jail... ya, makes sense.... Same thing happens in health insurance... even though we pay them a fortune for it...
Yep, brother is going through that. Pay 600+ a month for years, finally need to make a claim, they denied it for preexisting condition. IT IS NOT a preexisting condition. There is NOTHING that he has ever had done, because he is pretty healthy. He doesn't have any preexisting conditions. It's absolutely crazy!!!

I'm sick and tired of insurance companies. They are a casino, where all Americans are chained to the seats, while they're allowed to rig the payouts entirely.
I had extensive damage from Ian, I made a claim and received 3 estimates. My insurance company came no where close to the amount to make my house whole again. Due to the fact, my pool was exposed because my fence was obliterated and there’s kids in the neighborhood that I didn’t want to wake up and find the young kid face down in my pool I put a fence up. I had a knock on my door and was served by my insurance company because I made an authorized repairs because I did not use their preferred provider . It’s been 2 years with my lawyer fighting them. I’ve wrote multiple letter to the governors office and insurance commission with no response. I’ve spent thousands on tarps and have to be on the roof at least three times a month fixing or replacing them one of the bedrooms I had to cut the entire ceiling out because of mold now that room is vacant with nothing but buckets in tarps in it. The system is absolutely failing us.
Now I realize all the complaints after we taxpayers paid for a special session to fix this problem in Florida. Another fraud. I had to cancel my homeowners Insurance with USAA when they raised it 40% about 12 years ago with no apparent reason.(Except I called them the month before to ask for a way to lower the premium.) Now it would probably be another 300% raise like my neighbors.
Then the construction companies do by overcharging the insurance for work they never do, never come back to finish but take the money, leaving you with a home you cannot live in, then have to file suits and wait

The fact that a customer has to spend money on a lawsuit just to get the insurance company to pay for something they should have paid out, is absurd. The fact that insurance companies are committing these crimes and there are no legal repercussions just shows that no one cares about the consumer, who has been doing their part by making their payments.

Our roof in SW Florida was damaged by hurricane Ian and caused some interior damage. Insurance company offered us $1000! One year later after hiring an attorney they paid out $91,000. Of course, a big chunk went to the attorney. Our neighbors with different insurers also received low offers on their claims until they sought legal representation.
Insurance carries have been complaining to the state and say the reason why insurance premiums are so high is because 40% of the claims paid out went to lawyers. But if they paid claims in good faith homeowners wouldn’t need to hire lawyers in the first place.
Yes, I went through this. Unable to fight back. Exhausted from the heat, and the rain. For one thing, it's very difficult for an individual to PROVE their case. Businesses know this. In an emergency situation you have to hire SOMEONE immediately just to stop further damage to your home. I hired and ended up with horrible work done. And a dishonest contractor demanding I pay for horrible work that had to be redone. The regulating Agency passed this contractor's work without even inspecting. When I wouldn't pay, he put a lien on my house and foreclosed the lien. Very difficult to find a business that will help you fight another contractor. None of them want to critique another person's work. My house STILL needs the repairs it should've had. I spent all the money I had on an attorney just to stop the foreclosure. No one would help me. I've been learning how to do it all myself. It's taking YEARS. And as you said, "No arrests." However, the Agency that passed the work of the first contractor did arrest ME for violating Code by having construction materials in my backyard for more than 7 days. In my city it's a CRIME for a homeowner to have constuction materials in their backyard for more than 7 days. Yes, you got that right. It's not a Crime for a Contractor to CHEAT an elderly lady, but it IS a Crime for that elderly lady to have construction materials in her own backyard for more than 7 days. The City Took everything -- all my materials and my scaffolding, ladder, etc. Even my wheelbarrow and rolling metal carts I was using to move the materials. And they ARRESTED me!
I had a neighbor's tree fall on my house. The insurance company kept saying: wind damage: $6,000 deductible. It wasn't wind damage on a beautiful day. I access a website that showed the wind speed every 5 minutes in my area. No Wind! I submitted that to the insurance company, along with a description of what damage could be expected for different wind speeds. What could they say? My deductible was $500. Take THAT! You just have to stand up and be the squeaky wheel. It's a nightmare dealing with insurance companies. After we lost everything in Katrina, I said: it's not insurance, it's an illusion of insurance.
Maybe I’m just negative but I just expect insurance companies to look for reasons to not pay. I think people find themselves in these horror situations and forget the insurance companies are a business. Lol Aka absolutely they’re not going just hand over the money easy peasy. Fortunately you pushed back and got paid but think of all the others that don’t. That’s a ton of money that they end up saving.
Btw my family also loss everything during hurricane Katrina. My mother’s house had 13ft of water. Lol Luckily for us my mom is a smooth operator. The adjuster handled my mom’s house plus my aunt’s house down the street. They quickly befriended him. Lol Both received 100k (Maybe more) checks and it definitely didn’t cost 100k to do all the repairs. My mom was so grateful she ended up gifting him a gold chain that I initially thought was my surprise bday present. 😂
@@shaun5047 From my experience, they don't. If I have a Falling Objects loss like this, I order a Windstorm Report - this comes from a 3rd party vendor and not your insurance Carrier, generally Benchmark, CoreLogic, Haag or similar. If we have a high wind event in the area on the reported date of loss, it's attributed to Windstorm. If not, then Falling Objects. Then I'd follow up to see if there are signs of rot/disease, and whether there is any written record that the neighbor was aware the tree was a risk and someone requested it be removed. That's pretty much how all of us adjusters investigate these types of losses.

I say that as someone who has blown things up over corporate behavior I thought was unethical. Ultimately it didn't matter much in the grand scheme of things. They like deregulation when it saves them money. The only reason they'd care about this if they get personally impact or someone they like does. Why should a stranger be expected to do so much for people who clearly hate themselves and their country enough to vote for the evil people doing the most to hurt them? Maybe they shouldn't have been lining their pockets with all our money they were being paid for several years prior to the back to back natural disasters 🤔
I was just talking about this with one of my oldest friends over the weekend after the Hurricane. Insurance companies have never been about being there for you in my lifetime, but now? Despicable. I pay soo much for absolutely nothing, unless I can afford an attorney. God Help America.
Insurance companies have been pulling out of Florida due to homes becoming uninsurable and there's been fears of what would happen when the next major hurricane hit and now we're at the "find out" phase. There's the public Citizens Property Insurance which DeSantis has been trying to get rid of.
I mean this respectfully, but if you knew even the basics about climate change, you would never move to Florida. The state's population has grown since the pandemic, I have no idea why an educated person would buy property there, given the risks. You can't replace the roof on a home every five years, it's not economically feasible. So we either have to drastically change the engineering in these homes (this is a long shot), or we move out of the region. But you can't even begin to have this conversation, because half the country thinks climate change is a chinese hoax, or that it's no big deal. DeSantis famously removed all mentions of climate change from state curriculum, pretty astonishing. Conservatives will sit there while these storm surges destroy their homes, winds rip the roofs off, and the constant storms make some of the most valuable real estate in the country uninsurable. They are baffled. And they will never know, this was all predicted decades ago in the UN IPCC report. This wasn't a surprise. But instead of using the last 30 years to prepare, we instead did nothing. That's because we Republicans in power who prevented action at every turn. These Republicans and their fellow travelers, who bitterly complain that 60 minutes is biased and apparently untrustworthy, apparently didn't think the oil industry was biased, and believed their word over the scientific community. And here we are. Insurance companies lie and commit fraud, and they _still_ lose money in FL. They _still_ say they can't afford to operate in the state.

The solution is to end this industry of criminals that are these insurance companies, how? By building concrete houses with hurricane-proof concrete roofs, the problem is solved. A wooden house in a place where there is a Hurricane is pure stupidity.
I live in MS and had a Progressive-hired adjuster come out to estimate roof damages after a hurricane and they said my roof had $518 worth of damage. The roofing company brought out their own adjuster and submitted it to Progressive saying they were very wrong. Progressive caved and wrote the check for the new roof. I can't imagine having to go to court over it. If the shoe were on the other foot, you bet the common homeowner would be charged with fraud.
We live in the desert, no hurricanes or floods here, but State Farm (years ago) raised our rates considerably, and when asked why, they said it was because of the hurricane damage in Florida. We cancelled them!!
This is happening in the state of Florida where the governor has paraded his mettle with going after Disney, but why is he weak on issues that really matter to his constituents?
Yup. The one time we needed it after losing everything…they initially approved replacement of all we owned. Two weeks later, they denied our claim. Not sure what I was paying for?
When my homeowner's insurance went to $10,000 a year I started self-insuring. It took a lot of work to pay my house off early but it was well worth it.
I think that’s what more and more people will need to do as well. In the end most will be better off. And that’s how it used to be way back when, where people just had to save money for the unexpected then times changed and insurance became a thing to give people peace of mind, sadly it is only a scam and not worth the hell in return.
I REALLY want to do this too. 8k insurance for an Orlando home purchased in 2009 for $120k. What do I have to show for the $35k+ in insurance payments, NOTHING. I could have 30 grand in 4 years saved away to cover most any "insurable" issue with my house! 2025 insurance will likely go up too! Good grief..

The insurance companies dont pay out on legitimant damage claims and then cry about litigation & legal fees bc homeowners and contractors have no choice but to take them to court to get the homeowners covered. The insurance companies are making more money than ever and screwing the homeowners.

This isn't new. In 98 a tornado hit my parents home in TN. They were scared to sue because of age, and bank financing agreement. They had to " take what they could get." They underpaid them by thousands! Tree down, roof gone, rain damage, broken windows got them 7 grand! Our family members did most repairs on the home. To see my father on the roof trying to fix his own chimney when he paid his insurance faithfully, was heartbreaking.
They have set policies percentages of how much they are going to pay out, like 15% etc, Warren Buffets Insurance company has a policy of simply not paying out, according to RUclipsr that covers these topics.
I'm a whistleblower. I thought people would be happy when I exposed the corruption in our local Metro Area Building Department. I spoke to the city council and exposed it. Instead I was threatened, was fired from my job, and the Building Department surveilled me and then had me arrested for having construction materials in my backyard for more than 7 days. Turns out the Laws are written to favor the contractors and give immunity to the Building Department. It's not a crime for the Contractors to cheat YOU the homeowner. It's not a crime for the Building Department to falsify inspections and approve sub-code work. @JimAllen-Persona In my city/county the Roofers profit by doing sub-code work with materials much cheaper & thinner than the minimum required by code. The Agency in charge of requiring that all roofers do the work according to code doesn't enforce it, and I've spoken to workers of more than 30 roofing companies. The real answer is you don't get a choice, home and auto insurance are mandatory. Turning what should be a market decision into a tax that businesses get to decide the amount of. Health insurance is also basically mandatory, because trying to pay for a single IV bag out of pocket is $100 for you and it's $2 for the insurance company.
@JimAllen-Persona I keep liability. I can do a $100k repair. It would take a big fire or a direct tornado to cause that. I overbuilt my roof, windows, garage and doors to get me in this position. Its a CBS home.

Regarding property insurance claims, always contact a public adjuster first to represent you. Never do it through the insurer. The adjuster is paid via commission, by FL law it cannot surpass 20% of the settled amount. The adjuster representing you negotiates on your behalf to obtain the largest payout possible as their commission is dependent on the amount settled.
I believe in this report they have "public adjuster" confused with "independent adjuster" who as you mentioned are hired by the insurance carrier, to go on site, inspect, take photos and write an estimate that is sent to the insurance carrier. In addition to the fraud going on here with the insurance carrier changing the settlement, they should not be charging the homeowner the $1000 fee the independent adjuster is receiving. He's being hired in lieu of the insurance carrier not having their own field adjuster physically inspect the claim.
Absolutely! I found this to be true on my last claim. My insurance’s adjuster was displeased that I hired someone who works outside of their company. It helps to level the playing field.
Unfortunately its the moms and pops who own insurance stocks and get left holding the bag- the algorithms and computers got it figured out already and the big boys dump their stock before the mass panic.
there should be a law where the home owner gets the original report from the adjuster and has to agree to the damage in it before it's submitted. or something like that. something to improve the transparency and protect home owners.

You've been traumatized by storm and loss and psychologically can't deal with a lawsuit. Kicking people when they're down. No arrests?

I submitted that to the insurance company, along with a description of what damage could be expected for different wind speeds. What could they say? My deductible was $500. Take THAT! Those differences of opinion are really hurting people. I have to assume they don't care if they still treat the evil neighbors doing it like pariahs.
When we choose to cultivate such an individualistic society, we are choosing to create an environment where individuals are better served looking out for their own interests and its actually detrimental to individuals to do the right thing. People who want to be all individualistic for personal wealth accrual but want to be collectivist to protect their personal wealth, are revolting.
Those CEOs and those people that made those changes should be held accountable for jail time
Amd they just raised insurance! Criminals. They all should be in jail.
Because they're mad they can't line their pockets with our free money anymore thanks to all the natural disasters we've had back to back! They actually have to pay for what we pay them to do, THEIR JOB! Nothing pisses me off more than hearing someone say insurance companies are losing money now bc of the natural disasters.
They need to be investigated.
That's why Warren Buffet calls it the best business ever. It's the American way
@@KevinW1985that explains higher insurance premiums for the rest of the country
I agree! It is a con job!
And these con jobs need to be made accountable for all insurance companies that are not trustworthy!
Sorry... The best that our pathetic politicians can do is award these companies huge subsidies for doubling our premiums and scamming us, so that the other companies agree to follow their lead.

Really don't think "caved" is the proper term. It states IN YOUR POLICY DOCUMENTS that you have a right to hire a second opinion.
Do you work as an adjuster or for an insurance company?
They’ll just raise premiums really high for the upcoming billing cycles as retribution. Insurance companies gonna get their money one way or another.

State Farm did this to me. The repair cost me $12,000 to repair. They paid me $1,700.
State Farm is the worst. Highly recommend everyone stay away from State Farm.

@@conniegravelle1803I was told State Farm is the worst home insurance that ever existed
You need to sue them. It's your right.
Because its inconvenient to him.
He's only concerned with protecting the insurance companies. You know, the ones that put $$ in his pocket. Sadly, the grift is real. Vote accordingly.
I don’t even think they offer insurance at any price in blue states like California
@@Priust189what’s a “blue” state?

I was talking to a colleague (who is retiring in FL). Plans on buying and paying down his home and self-insuring. He started his insurance savings long ago and has been investing it. It will take some work. But he says it's much better than playing Russian Roulette with insurance premiums.
@@skibik3r it almost seems like it's part of some system somewhere to drain people of their money. If you bought your house in 2009, you should have gotten a pretty good deal on it at least. That's when I bought mine over here in Polk county when they were giving them away.
@@BionicOne seems like the insurance rates are live and based on value vs purchase price (like property tax).
Zillow says 390k now. The insurance prices must really hammer people that bought at the current rates, they get triple hammered. High Property tax, high mortgage payment, and high insurance. Thankfully, we only are getting hit by one.
Always, Always, Always get your own adjuster!!!! Do not rely on the one the insurance company sends to you.
As a 27 year old who is going to buy a home in Florida relatively soon, comments like this legitimate help me learn new things. Thank you
These adjusters did their jobs right. Had nothing to do with the shenanigans of the insurance company.
Homeowners Insurance: You pay. They don't.
Deepest, thanks for the honesty and integrity of the whistle blowers.
The insurance companies dont pay out on legitimant damage claims and then cry about litigation & legal fees bc homeowners and contractors have no choice but to take them to court to get the homeowners covered. The insurance companies are making more money than ever and screwing the homeowners.
Ron desantis gutted the state mandate to vet/audit insurance companies. They can do whatever they want in Florida now. How can Floridians vote that bozo a second time is insane. Glad I moved to South Carolina.
Exactly!!
Omg
I knew something wasn't right when he approved a cancer causing compound to be used in asphalt.
Because it’s Florida. They get what they vote for.
Prayers for the whistleblowers. Instead of supporting wasteful rich RUclipsrs we need to support whistleblowers to help expose corruption 🙏🏻

But it is a crime if you, the homeowner have your own building materials in your backyard for more than 7 days. Check the laws in your area.
Where is our Governor Ron DeSantis and all the other law makers?? Insurance is one of the things that is making it impossible to live in Florida and the governor is not doing anything about it
Probably a fruitless task to expect a Republican to reign in big business.
...because they contribute to him and keep him in office. DeSantis doesn't care about the little guy. He only cares about his millionaire buddies, like the ones who run the insurance companies and those who want to turn our State Parks into golf courses. Floridians need to wake up!
Maybe ole Ron has stock in the insurance there...worth looking into
Ron and the MAGA Florida legislators helped create the problem, they are not going to help fix it.
Don’t they contribute millions to his campaign? He is in the insurance companies pockets.
Straight up crooks, but willingly to prosecute the little guy if they file a false claim, but do nothing to them when they alter billions of dollars every year in insurance claims!
That was criminal. How do insurance companies get away with it?
I had the same issue with a Florida-based insurance company here in Texas when the huge hailstorm occurred in the spring of 2021. My roof was totaled, and I received the check after filing a complaint against the company through the state authority. I can confirm that insurance companies play the odds.
This just in, all insurance is a dirty scam. These crooks should all be sitting in prison.
They need to track this down to who is rewriting the reports and who told them to do so, and they need to be prosecuted and incarcerated

Class Action and Federal criminal action, as this behavior is all over this nation.
All the roofing companies know that the work they do will pass inspection because IT WILL NEVER BE INSPECTED. It'll just be passed! They all know this. They all know they can cheat the consumer and get away with it. The Government Agency doesn't care. The D.A.'s office doesn't care. The insurance companies don't care. If you ever have a claim, the insurance company will likely deny your claim because the work wasn't done up to code. All of them leave the homeowner holding the bag and taking the loss.
Thanks for speaking out. Ethics seems to mean nothing anymore. The ones with licenses who actually read the mandatory ethics portion of the CEs or Continuing Education and are honest and the ones who get put down by the other workers. @JimAllen-Persona People need to get the thought out of their head that they will EVER see that $100,000 in the case of a loss. You MIGHT see $50,000 and PROBABLY will get $25,000. I think actually quite a few people using just investments as their original payments(say 6500/year) would actually have $25,000 self-insured.

Adjusters do not get commission. That would be unethical. They're paid by the hour for their investigative service and reporting.
