Thanks, John, for this dissection, and for your own options. I confess I gloss over every album after 1985; I just haven't found much that stacks up in my "ideal of Elton". But because of you, I'll re-try with your picks. Yes, I read somewhere that Elton felt he had to record piano and vocal together on "Ticking". So glad he did, as you hear the tone-painting at certain lyrics (i.e. the legato swirl at "gun butt felt so smooth and warm", or the arpeggiated barrage at "pumped you full of rifle shells.." Elton's best song, and a top 3 Bernie lyric. Also a fan of "Shoot Down The Moon."

Amazing performance if he did this while singing as well. Such a superior cut.

Between the songs that Elton curated for this disc and the ones you've added, some amazing tunes. Favorites from Elton's choices include: Ticking (probably my favorite Elton song ever); Tell Me When The Whistle Blows; House (I think you're short-changing the lyrics here - think of it from the perspective of the main character from "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" and you may appreciate it more); Blues For Baby and Me; My Quicksand (I think you found the lyrics here a little clunky - I think they're superb). Among the choices you've added, I love: High Flying Bird; Elton's Song; Pain; Birds. Some deep-cuts worth mentioning from my perspective: The Greatest Discovery (EJ); I Need You to Turn To; (EJ); My Father's Gun (Tumbleweed); All the Nasties (Madman - appears a couple of times later in the Jewel Box); Idol (Blue Moves); Burning Buildings (Breaking Hearts); When Love is Dying (The Union). Technically, I Feel Like a Bullet can't be considered a deep-cut because it was released as a B side single, but it really deserved a much better fate than it received.

I hadn't thought of House in that way. I have read the book so will relisten to the song. Not sure I can get past the plodding tune though.

Hi John, another great video , the Deep Cuts always provide some interesting surprises , that can be often overlooked on the released albums .

Yes we need a deep cuts tour from Elton or possibly a musical made up entirely of deep cuts.

They left a good few rarities and B-sides out. They should just do a B-Sides anthology in a few volumes. No album tracks. No singles.

Regarding 'Ticking': It's a masterpiece. Some of Elton's songs are pure Art, and 'Ticking' is one of them. The story it tells, .... his playing ... the emotions it evokes .... and, as you alluded, I have Always been Amazed at ... how should I put it .... since there is no percussion on the song (unless you consider the piano to be a percussion instrument, as some people do), Elton would have had to have an Unbelievable gift for keeping time If the track was recorded live (vocals and piano together), as the drummer isn't there to do it for him. I kind of laughed when you started to say you wondered if they were recorded together, and I yelled, 'Yes!!' ... *** as far as some of Elton's other 'Art Tracks', I would include I Need You To Turn To, First Episode At Hienton, Sixty Years On, The King Must Die, Madman Across The Water, Have Mercy On The Criminal, This Song Has No Title, ... and .. oh heck, I could go on all evening! 8-)

Excellent suggestion. Another of Bernie's great story creations.

    1. Ticking 8.5/10 - no need much to say - brilliant storytelling, emotional song.
    2. Crystal 9.5/10 - I love this one, great pop song
    3. All Quiet on the Western Front 4.5/10 - not a fan, pretty predictable, corny and bland - I'd choose Princess or Good Times Gone
    4. Tell Me When the Whistle Blows 5/10 - not a fan unfortunatelly... too thin sounding song. I'd choose Tower of Babel
    5. Freaks in Love 6/10 - it's fine song, nice melody, though nothing spectacular. I would choose Porch Swing or It's Getting Dark
    6. Never Too Old 5.5/10 - yes, it's kinda boring song, not bad, but so many better songs. I'd choose Roses, Love is Dying or Mandalay.
    7. The Emperor's New Clothes 8.5/10 - great choice and one of my favorites from SFTWC
    8. House 7/10 - a fine song, but there are so much better deep cuts on MIE like Belfast, Latitude, Cold etc.
    9. Meal Ticket 6.5/10 - it's ok, but I'd choose Better Off Dead
    10. Understanding Women 8.5/10 - interesting and good choice IMO to see all Elton's sides.
    11. Shoot Down the Moon 5/10 - to be honest, I don't think this one would fit Bond movie... it's ok, but somehow too slow and corny imo. Didn't hear that song in ages, maybe I should give it another try. I'd choose Soul Glove or This Town.
    12. Have Mercy on the Criminal 9/10 - dramatic, dark, brilliant.
    13. Blues for Baby and Me 9/10 - another brilliant ballad from DSM. I like it more and more with every listening.
    14. My Quicksand 5/10 - oh well, not crazy about this album anyway, but I'd choose brilliant Oscar Wilde song.
    15. Street Kids 6/10 - it's a fine rocker, but Billy Bones would be my choice.

I agree with most of these except House which is a skipover track for me. Understanding Women is definitely improving in my estimation after hearing it on the Jewel Box.
