Mind of The Record Collector: Ari Crane
Buddies! I had the great fortune to befriend the latest guest on "Mind of The Record Collector' during my latest visit to the Austin Record Convention in May. Ari Crane has been collecting records for several decades, traversing the country in search of the obscure, the unusual, and the rare pieces of wax many of us only hear about. A fixture on the record show circuit, the stories Ari shares here are GOLD (just like the ones he shared in Austin with me during our first meeting). He's been a record store owner, served as Consignment Director of Vinyl Records and Music Memorabilia for Heritage Auctions, and now leads his latest endeavor - Vinyl4Vets.com - putting vinyl and means to listen ...

Gotta admit I lost some interest when it was suggested that Elvis “dethroned” Sinatra as the Voice, 😂
Appreciate you watching - feel free to jump in and share in the comments or onscreen sometime. Water is always warm. Have a good weekend!
The question answers itself.
It’s not just your four steps, he’s literally walking up to 30,000 steps a day😓
The regular carrier didn’t do this. He didn’t mind 30,004 steps in his day. Not all heroes wear capes ✌🏻
A fun listen as always chaps. It just took me a few listening sessions to get to the end (everyday stuff just getting in the way). Had to laugh at the Rhino tease. Not an inspired choice for me but again I'm not the target audience. Got the sweats when you showed the Parliament poster/booklet as I couldn't remember if I had them but thankfully I have 🙂. There's a great poster in Funkadelic's America Eats It's Young as well Chance if you still need that lp. Cheers Nige
Nige, you've successfully activated my radar for that poster as I don't have that one. As you know, the posters and supplemental "goodies" are often much, much more difficult to find than the records. Thanks for listening to our shenanigans!
Here someone put Goodwill under contract to get first Dibs on all records donated to their organization
@@SikNic unreal! 🤯
I wish I could have been there for the live stream. The release of the Rhino Hifi Titles was hilarious. I thought Jose's head was going to explode.
@@memyselfmyvinyl894 lots of heavy petty going on. In fairness, he got it very early so had to play coy 😬
Thanks very much guys✌️ Edit: how many hits on that LSD LP?
@@dimebagdave77 thanks for watching the nonsense! Have a great weekend buddy!
@ConcertBuddie you too Buddie✌️ you're currently showing my favorite Scorpions album
@dimebagdave77 it’s mine too (clearly) 🔥

@@dimebagdave77 gone too soon 🙏🏻
I have totally backed off of anything audiophile. I also believe it won’t hold value in years to come. I got burned in the great 90s card meltdown. Luckily the cards all got washed away during the flood lol. Now I try to just buy for enjoyment and not think about possible value
That's right, you were a card collector as well. Lots of similarities between some of the "reissue boom" in vinyl now, to those 90's card dealers. Have a great weekend Steve!
If I could have said “dead wax” instead of “junk wax” one more time I would have. 🤦♂️
🤣🤣🤣
Always great to see an OG. Brandon is class! Nice interview! 👍👍👍
Thank you very much for the kind words! He’s a great collector, even better human!
I’m a little late listening to this one but you guys talking about hype stickers…. I got an album from the 70’s with hype sticker and shrink on it that says “you going to play this record on that dull needle?” It’s like a anti-hype sticker lol
I love this - so weird and awesome at the same time! Thanks for sharing and watching 🙏🏻
Great video, just subbed! I started my vinyl record obsession in May of 2022 thanks to a record I found at a local Goodwill store. I started collecting, and even started my channel. But due to the lack of finding anything worthwhile at Goodwill and thrift stores, I have been (happily!) going to record stores and scouring through their bargain bins. I think what really turned me off was what you pointed out, the Shop Goodwill website. Gonna check out your videos
Nice to meet you Mark and welcome! There are still gems in the cheap bins, it just takes more canvassing to find them. Estate sales, flea markets, even bookstores are still places to pull solid records. What kind of genres/artists are you into, and what's been your favorite find so far? I'll go over and check out your channel as well!
@@ConcertBuddie I'll need to explore my local book stores. I think the bubble has been burst here in Philadelphia, as resellers have really taken over. I'm into mostly 80's and early 90's. I am big into 80's Rock and New Wave , with some New Jack Swing thrown in for fun. My favorite find at a thrift store was my Empire Strikes Back Soundtrack.
@valuevinylwithmark big 90’s fan/collector here too. Are you familiar with the channel “Pieces of Vinyl”? Rocco is a Philly guy and talks record shops in that area as well. ✌🏻
@@ConcertBuddie yes, I have been subbed to him, and enjoy his channel. I am really enjoying everyone's videos, and am always looking to check out others in the VC
Great interview Chance. Ari is obviously deep in the game and knows his stuff. I love nothing more than hearing stories of rarities being found for cheap. Personally I have no interest in the slabbing aspect but appreciate it's something that could really catch on. Cheers Nige
Thanks Nige! It’s those stories of great finds on the cheap that keep me hunting myself. Even at the charity shop 😂
@@ConcertBuddie Haha, the life can be sucked out of you for sure when looking through crud in charities etc. but you just never know. I actually had my best charity find last year after 20+ years of looking. UK psych LP by Velvett Fogg for £1, current median £230. I don't do them weekly so it's a miracle to find something of that ilk and when I did them regularly in the 00s never found one psych or prog lp. I always think in the US (obviously depending on the State) you have a lot more potential to find gems as the amount of records pressed was far higher than the UK. All the best...Nige
Hey I just stumbled on this and subscribed. I’ve been buying used records for about 15 years now and I don’t care if someone wants to buy a slabbed album. Do what you want with your money but I don’t see how this kind of thing doesn’t drive up the price to get into the hobby and buying records in the future. Thanks for the entertainment.
Welcome! Thanks for subscribing and checking this one out. That's about the same length of time as I've been doing it. What kind of records (genres, labels, etc) do you collect? Would you ever get a record slabbed?
@@ConcertBuddiethank you!! I started with classic rock like a lot of people do still listen to that but I bought a used rush hemispheres about eight years ago and it was my gateway to prog so now it’s more like Eloy, porcupine tree, genesis and funk also. I feel like slabbing an album will most likely be done more for investment purposes not a preservation one. If I had something crazy rare and valuable one that I already owned I would slab it but just so I could sell it later when it was at its most valuable. I just feel like with there being so many recopies of these “rare” albums made that only a very small amount will hold value long term. I do feel like this this going to lead to people asking crazy prices for used records you would usually get at estate sales, garage sales and flea markets though and that will be a bummer.
@@Chasing_records Totally feel you, definitely on so many reissues being released the last 5 or so years. To me originals and early pressings are more likely to be worth more in the long run; maybe even some limited reissues. I do remember the days of hunting garage sales, estate sales, etc. and coming up with some great scores. Been a very, very long time since I've found any great vinyl that way; matter of fact, I think Rush "Hemispheres" was the last deal I got at a garage sale, and that was $8 a few years ago. 🙂
If you are looking fo vinyl records forr dollar, you cant find that anymore, if you want to collect you have to spend money
And if you can find them, they are generally beat up pretty good & titles no one wants (hello Barbara Streisand). Thanks for watching!
While it’s so dry now a days yes, “teeny bopper collections” are real. I got Of Monsters And Men, Halsey, and Zeppelin Physical Graffiti nice 2010s reissue for 1$ each. So if you happen to be the first one to see what someone happened to donate that day I mean anything’s possible. I just don’t count on it in any capacity
Timing is the biggest factor, for sure. But I have seen some of the newer reissues hit the thrift and then get priced WAY up and put behind the counter/glass/table like a historical artifact. There’s truly no rhyme or reason (cough, cough) consistency in how they do what they do at the store level.
@@ConcertBuddie ugh yea man. This video was huge for talking about the specific pricing goodwills are starting to do and obviously will be doing more and more until they are just the resellers themselves. And the shop goodwill thing. Ive gotten a couple CDs from various eBay stores of different shop goodwill stores in different states and they do know about some stuff like this Underoath CD I got that should have been 3$ at most being from goodwill but they priced it at the going rate of it which is around 30$. Gah!!!!
@@arzabael $30 for a cd at the thrift? COME ON MAN! haha. That's wild.
@@ConcertBuddie yep. Yet yesterday at a local independent thrift store I paid 25 cents a CD and got a stack including Cocteau Twins, Alanis Morrisette, U2, Paul Simon, Genesis, Dave Brubeck, Neil Young, Christopher Cross, their and each were either their best albums or greatest hits comps. Treasure matey!! Happy hunting Concert Buddy. I got some concerts coming up myself. Thanks again for the highly topical and valuable video dude
@arzabael enjoy those shows sir! And that new stack of cd’s 🤘🏻
I started collecting CDs and Cassette Tapes because of what’s happened to Vinyl at the thrift store
I think that’s exactly how a lot of us got started, mainly because it was too cheap not too AND there was good stuff pretty regular. Both a far cry to the thrift of today. Thanks for watching this video (and the other one as well)!
Another good interview. This is collecting on a whole different level with the grading and the slabs. It's probably not my style, but I am coming around to the mindset of preservation and people can do what they want with their records. Ari certainly has some good stories. The audio therapy portion of this interview is something I am going to dig into. I could use some rejuvenating by way of records/music. Also can sell it to.my wife as "this is helping me live longer, THAT is why I need this record."
I like where your head is at Kevin - mind if I borrow that idea? My wife will totally go for it 🙂
@ConcertBuddie We are in this together...of course you can and should use it. Speaking of...just got a new (to me at least) turntable. As I'm unboxing it and setting it up, I got a sideways look from the wife. She didn't say anything with her mouth, but her eyes told me something. It was to the effect, "why is there another record player on my dining room table?"
@memyselfmyvinyl894 hahaha. Fight the good fight! Gattica!!!
Him getting into the healing frequencies subject is something that needs to become more popular
Totally agree. First I’d heard of it, but it makes a TON of sense. I think the mission of vinyl4vets is AWESOME and look forward to seeing it grow
@@ConcertBuddie abso freaking lutely dude. Some science backed spiritual kind of shit for veterans that involved doing something interesting like putting on records is just a lot of good shit together at once
Thanks for putting this together and bringing him on. I love seeing people get excited about records and collecting
Thank YOU for watching it and the kind words. Sincere thanks! 🙏🏻
Enjoy these interviews CB, thanks as always for sharing them so we can all grow our collecting chops. All boats rise with the tide and I appreciate you bringing some great folks like Ari to your channel.
Sincerely appreciate those kind words, thank you! Takes one to know one 🙂
I'd like to ask Ari what DFW area record shows he recommends. Are there any in the Tarrant County / Fort Worth area he could recommend? With my limited vision and transportation issues, I've been trying to find something going on that I could attend. Closer to home always makes it easier for me to work out rides and get to them. I've heard of a few here and there but I really don't know what record shows are going on in the DFW area nowadays? Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
Excellent interview, Chance, and an interesting perspective. Hope to run into you and Ari at future record shows!
@@MarkMorris-1962 thanks Mark! That would be awesome to meet up one day 🤘🏻
Interesting conversation. Not sure if I agree or not but feel more educated on the topic.
@@tokyorecordstyle appreciate you giving it a watch/listen! Thank youuuuu✌🏻
My biggest issue with this entire slabbing process is that nobody is addressing the elephant in the room, Heritage Auctions and WATA's alleged dodgy auctions setting false high watermark prices for video games, I noticed video games were conveniently not mentioned during the video. Until this is addressed I would be very hesitant about investing in slabbed records. While I get why someone may want to slab there vinyl, I don't get why it has to be sealed, not all vinyl records are sold sealed.
Totally hear you. I only know very loosely about the WATA situation, but what I do know is that any sort of collusion or compromise on standards is bad for everyone. I think back to the Ken Griffey Jr Upper Deck rookie card fiasco in that arena; how the manufacturer had thousands and thousands made + held back and was not forthcoming of that practice and how they were manipulating the marketplace for it. I definitely feel standardization is a must, and feel that regardless of competition, any “grading service” in any hobby needs to adhere to a level playing field. Here in vinyl records, I still look forward to that happening sooner than later. Thanks for watching this piece. 🙏🏻
@@ConcertBuddie So true, there is a lot of crossover to vinyl from video games, especially with the popularity of video game soundtracks coming out on vinyl these days and those collectors have already seen this before. If the slabbing of vinyl is ever going to be a thing, grading companies need to keep themselves completely independent.
Great interview Chance! Nice to hear the future of vinyl. Makes me want to think what albums I would get slabbed.
Thanks for checking it out! My fear would be sending in something “good” to me, only for it to return with a soft grade. Maybe one day I’ll give it a shot 🤔
I totally understand. I would probably send one of my sealed Pearl Jam’s or Soundgardens
Good interview, Chance. I dig what the subject is doing for vets! Can't stand his approach to slabbing. We all have our opinions. I didn't watch this on the YT but listened to it as a podcast when I was out for a walk earlier in the week. There were two instances where I noted that Ari was expounded on how great slabbing is, and you response was something along the lines of a subdued syllable. I could tell you were not in full agreement with the take but you were being a gracious interviewer and moving things along. My opinion on slabbing - since you didn't ask 🤪 - stems from being a hockey card collector as a kid. Things changed in the hobby when both Upper Deck came into the market as a 'premium' product (audiophile?) and when slabbing began. Everything became an issue of ROI. When a hobby becomes dominated by investment interests, the fun can disappear. Also, Ari mentioned a number of record slabbing companies getting into the business, and those companies will compete with each other for business. How will they compete? By offering better grades for bigger customers. It happened with sports cards. Money has the ability to corrupt. FWIW, Tom
Hey Tom, appreciate the kind words sir. I do recall you aren’t a big fan of slabbing from the VMG piece month’s ago 😁. You are right, I’m still making up my mind on the topic, for a few of the reasons you call out here. I do feel that bringing the speculation aspect into this hobby is equal parts inevitable and uneasy, only because (as a collector) it’s more competition for the super rare pieces, and when they do get slabbed, I’m not sure I’m a buyer at that point. I’ve collected cards and comics both over the years, and see some merits of slabbing, especially the old/sealed pieces that are very, very rare and in great condition as/is. Ari makes good points towards that aim, and I agree. I also agree that it’s not for everyone (including myself) but I may change my opinion down the road. I’ve had a lot of trouble with old sealed dead stock that (once opened) had warping or the dreaded ”gassing” effect and then the vinyl is unplayable. It’s changed my approach to buying old sealed pieces, and in those cases I could see employing encapsulation in the right situation. I do appreciate Ari’s new project with Vets, and his enthusiasm for the hobby was sorely needed (by me) of late. Hope you had a nice 4th holiday weekend Tom ✌🏻
I lived in Kansas City in the 90s. The Music Exchange was incredible. Back then you could find almost anything there. I used to go there a couple times a week.

Chance, killer that was a grail for you. I’m familiar with Hurt because of satellite radio back in the day. I’m pretty sure I was a Sirius guy and not an XM guy. I listened to and loved vol I & II. It’s been dead for years now in Michigan, I was in hobby in the 70s, when no one wanted to buy vinyl.
@@donnieodom7844 I bet you scored some great deals back in the day!
It’s been dead here in Chicago for years. I don’t even waste my time.
I feel ya. Up until these recent drop ins, hadn’t stopped at any thrift for at least 6 months. Have a great Fourth Mike! 🇺🇸
Are these Goodwill stores you see selling on eBay part of that online website you showed? They've always been high-priced on the items I've looked at. I've only bought one or two albums from them via eBay and I wasn't really happy in the end. I definitely didn't get a good enough price break but it was more of a condition issue with what I got that left me unhappy I don't really get the opportunity to check out thrift stores too often due to the lack of transportation where I live. I felt kind of bad about it for a while, but after a lot of the videos I've seen discussing just how bad the stores have gotten, I don't feel so bad nowadays :-) Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
@@Bootradr not missing much my friend. What good records do show up at the store level are gobbled up quickly; just a matter of “right place, right time”. I’ve seen some eBay sellers are actual Goodwill stores (ex. Seattle), so I’m not sure how/why they do that as opposed to being forced to use the ShopGoodwill website. Didn’t use to be so sketchy, ya know? Hope this note finds you well Brian! Happy Fourth! 🇺🇸
@@ConcertBuddie yeah I kind of figured it was probably like you described. Thanks for the feedback Chance. I'm doing well and I hope that you and yours have a wonderful 4th of July also buddy 👍
"The THIFT is gone." - B.B. King (probably) I've never had much luck with that or garage sales. Same with antique shops. Im having a hard time finding USED records in VG+/VG+ condition record shops now.
Weird Al parody - tailor made! 🤣 You are spot on re: used…it’s drying up out there in these streets!
I constantly find people that have no idea that records are worth anything. I think because we are so into it and it has grown, we think everyone knows they are worth something. Basically, what I am trying to say is that people are just giving away records every day to get rid of them. I just got 16 Uhaul boxes of records donated to me. Although 14 of those are classical albums. But all of them are pristine and some sealed still. Tons of awesome soundtracks. Keep searching. Thrill of the hunt!
The thrill remains, fo ago. Better look up those classical records before moving off them - I recently heard about one being worth 15k 🤑. How’s the new spot coming along?
@@ConcertBuddie The new spot is coming along. Shouldn't be too long. I have my son going through the classical records just to make sure there isn't something valuable. Let me know if you want to stop by the shop and take a look before I open.
@Axel_Foley1970 yesssssss! Gotta break in the public restroom 😂
@ConcertBuddie too funny!
It's mostly dead, but as soon as you've completely lost faith, then some gems show up. Found both 2LP and single LP Blue Note Horace Silver comps at one of the most hopeless GWs ever. Nothing like the old days, though.
Sounds like an all-time find! I’ve only found one Blue Note (Jimmy Smith) and it was beat up, big time (and yes I still bought it just in case it was a butterface record - sounds great, looks terrible 😂). Thanks for dropping by!
How very dare you Chance...flimsy UK sleeves? I'll have you know those are the finest sleeves ever manufactured in the UK 😄. Joking aside, Capitol was part of the EMI group in the UK so sleeves printed by Garrod & Lofthouse also manufactured The Beatles sleeves in the 60s (along with The Animals, The Yardbirds, The Hollies, Manfred Mann, Pink Floyd etc). Admittedly they aren't the heavy pasted card that the US used but with the lovely laminated fronts and flipbacks they don't tend to suffer ringwear or seam splits. The equivalent to Goodwill in the UK would be our charity shops that every town in the UK has multiples of. Like the US the prices can be insane priced by a volunteer who doesn't know anything about records. But people still score, especially if you do them daily. Like you and most normal people I haven't got time to do that but will have a look every few weeks. Keep on looking though mate. You never know when that unassuming private press hard psych rock rarity may go under the radar of the staff and other grippers and awaits you there 🙂. All the best... Nige
Spot on assessment as usual Nige 🫡The laminate looks to be virtually ringwear/seam split impossible. Card stock a little light, yes, but it gives it a unique patina that is not something seen often around these parts. And it’s the “Chairman of The Board” AND Dino? Couldn’t resist! But yes, time being the most precious of commodities, I bet there are people out there still getting “the good stuff” through sheer frequency; have already heard some great stories along those lines since this aired. Be well my friend!
Chance, I guess I come here as the voice of reason...which makes sense, as I'm a proud "CD Guy." You know why the thrift stores have raised their prices? One word: "FLIPPERS." I'm sorry the days of buying a record for $1 at Goodwill, then flipping it on Discogs or eBay for $30-50, have come to an end. Knowing that the proceeds from most thrift stores go to charitable causes, I find it very selfish for VC members to complain that these stores are now asking $5-15 dollars for those same titles. TOO F**KIN' BAD! You want cheap records to flip, put in the work that The Waxed does, check out estate and garage sales...but remember, anyone can check prices on Discogs, so don't be surprised as the prices rise there as well. END RANT.
Strong rant Karl. 7/10. More censored profanity would’ve lifted the score (the Albanian judge loves it) 🤣. Kidding aside, no doubt “pricing abuse” blame lays on both sides of the proverbial aisle. Flippers (and sharing online - let’s face it) only made those Goodwill execs aware and wanting more of a cut. Won’t stop me from romanticizing those days back in the day when $20 would need an instant collection for any geek off the street. 😎
@@ConcertBuddie Come to The Dark Side, my friend... CDs are still $1 at Goodwill!!! (Unfortunately, I live in Eugene and the selection here is more like Bakersfield than Los Angeles...how many @#$%ing Buck Owens & George Strait cds did they sell in this town back in the 1990s? )
@@revkarl so many George Strait 😂
I’m just not going to do goodwill unless I really have a lot of time to waste. I just hate untidy stores, that is the retailer in me. I have checked out the thrift stores once in awhile more as a joke video. Kind of like an antique shop, no clue on how to price them
Like anything else, some are managed (ie tidiness) better than others, but that mothball smell never leaves the merchandise. So they have that going for them 🤣. Thought of you today when I saw a record with an old Kmart sticker on the shrink.
The thrifting for me had dried up as well here in the Chicago area. Like you said 10-15 years ago I was picking up hand fulls or LPs for a $1 each at the thrift stores . Those times are gone for good , my record buying has slowed way down this year . I’ve gotten into buying a few cassettes lately to add to my collection.
Funny you mention that, I've bought more cassettes in the past year than I had in the past 5 - combined. Not sure I'll go full into amassing a ton, but still fun nonetheless. Really appreciate you stopping by and sharing! Good vinyl (and cassette) luck!
@@ConcertBuddieyes I’m not going full swing into the cassettes. Just being really selective for the most part.
Many thanks Buddie. Last record i bought like this was Don Johnson's Heartbeat 😁
What a way to go out! Tied for first with Bruce Willis’ “They Call Me Bruno” for Goodwill Classic!
The Goodwill well has completely dried up in Texas. I think you would be super lucky to find even a Croce or Beatles record at a Texas Goodwill. I think people have gotten smart about it and they're more apt to think they have some gold and sell it to a Half Price Books. At least that's the way it is in Houston.
HPB wasn’t even on my radar for records until 2015-ish, but I bet you are into something there; because where someone is getting rid of a lot of their old books, “oh hey, records” probably is part of their purge too. I’m still counting on you to build that time machine so we can get all the best 1st pressings from the mid century - how’s it coming? 😁
I gave up on Thrift Stores. In NYC they have essentially records that people put out on the sidewalk on garbage night. If you see a Barry Manilow or Barbra Streisand in one of these stores you’ve struck gold! 😂
Babs is the undisputed queen of the bins no doubt! Leading contender for lead suitor usually involves a face off between Herb Alpert or Bob Goulet. And the smells…musty cologne is back! 😷
I find I have better luck with CD’s in thrift stores. Since I’m not into Kate Smith, Andy Williams, or Lawrence Welk, vinyl is a no go😆
Andy Williams will move forever in thrift stores. Probably will be the records the apes find the forbidden zone in 1000 years 🤣. Thanks for checking this one out!
I did a video about ShopGoodwill a year or so ago. Desirable lots are always bid up past where I'd pay, and the rest of the bundles are stuff I wouldn't take for free. You get to pay shipping and the "grading" is just random words like "used".
