  • Buddies! I had the great fortune to befriend the latest guest on "Mind of The Record Collector' during my latest visit to the Austin Record Convention in May. Ari Crane has been collecting records for several decades, traversing the country in search of the obscure, the unusual, and the rare pieces of wax many of us only hear about. A fixture on the record show circuit, the stories Ari shares here are GOLD (just like the ones he shared in Austin with me during our first meeting). He's been a record store owner, served as Consignment Director of Vinyl Records and Music Memorabilia for Heritage Auctions, and now leads his latest endeavor - Vinyl4Vets.com - putting vinyl and means to listen to it into the hands of the heroes who serve this country. It's a wide-ranging talk, including why Ari believes encapsulation (ie "slabbing") will move a section of the hobby forward in a way similar to sports cards, comics, etc., and he may even pull out some mega rare records in his own collection that he's decided to archive in this fashion. All this and MORE, here on Vinyl Community Podcasts and "Mind of The Record Collector"!

    Another good interview. This is collecting on a whole different level with the grading and the slabs. It's probably not my style, but I am coming around to the mindset of preservation and people can do what they want with their records.
    Ari certainly has some good stories. The audio therapy portion of this interview is something I am going to dig into. I could use some rejuvenating by way of records/music. Also can sell it to.my wife as "this is helping me live longer, THAT is why I need this record."

As I'm unboxing it and setting it up, I got a sideways look from the wife. She didn't say anything with her mouth, but her eyes told me something. It was to the effect, "why is there another record player on my dining room table?"

      @@ConcertBuddie Haha, the life can be sucked out of you for sure when looking through crud in charities etc. but you just never know. I actually had my best charity find last year after 20+ years of looking. UK psych LP by Velvett Fogg for £1, current median £230. I don't do them weekly so it's a miracle to find something of that ilk and when I did them regularly in the 00s never found one psych or prog lp. I always think in the US (obviously depending on the State) you have a lot more potential to find gems as the amount of records pressed was far higher than the UK. All the best...Nige

    Hey I just stumbled on this and subscribed. I’ve been buying used records for about 15 years now and I don’t care if someone wants to buy a slabbed album. Do what you want with your money but I don’t see how this kind of thing doesn’t drive up the price to get into the hobby and buying records in the future. Thanks for the entertainment.

      Welcome! Thanks for subscribing and checking this one out. That's about the same length of time as I've been doing it. What kind of records (genres, labels, etc) do you collect? Would you ever get a record slabbed?

    • @Chasing_records

      @@ConcertBuddiethank you!! I started with classic rock like a lot of people do still listen to that but I bought a used rush hemispheres about eight years ago and it was my gateway to prog so now it’s more like Eloy, porcupine tree, genesis and funk also. I feel like slabbing an album will most likely be done more for investment purposes not a preservation one. If I had something crazy rare and valuable one that I already owned I would slab it but just so I could sell it later when it was at its most valuable. I just feel like with there being so many recopies of these “rare” albums made that only a very small amount will hold value long term. I do feel like this this going to lead to people asking crazy prices for used records you would usually get at estate sales, garage sales and flea markets though and that will be a bummer.

    • @ConcertBuddie
      @ConcertBuddie  Месяц назад +1

      @@Chasing_records Totally feel you, definitely on so many reissues being released the last 5 or so years. To me originals and early pressings are more likely to be worth more in the long run; maybe even some limited reissues. I do remember the days of hunting garage sales, estate sales, etc. and coming up with some great scores. Been a very, very long time since I've found any great vinyl that way; matter of fact, I think Rush "Hemispheres" was the last deal I got at a garage sale, and that was $8 a few years ago. 🙂

    Good interview, Chance. I dig what the subject is doing for vets! Can't stand his approach to slabbing. We all have our opinions. I didn't watch this on the YT but listened to it as a podcast when I was out for a walk earlier in the week. There were two instances where I noted that Ari was expounded on how great slabbing is, and you response was something along the lines of a subdued syllable. I could tell you were not in full agreement with the take but you were being a gracious interviewer and moving things along.
    My opinion on slabbing - since you didn't ask 🤪 - stems from being a hockey card collector as a kid. Things changed in the hobby when both Upper Deck came into the market as a 'premium' product (audiophile?) and when slabbing began. Everything became an issue of ROI. When a hobby becomes dominated by investment interests, the fun can disappear. Also, Ari mentioned a number of record slabbing companies getting into the business, and those companies will compete with each other for business. How will they compete? By offering better grades for bigger customers. It happened with sports cards. Money has the ability to corrupt.
    FWIW, Tom

      Hey Tom, appreciate the kind words sir. I do recall you aren’t a big fan of slabbing from the VMG piece month’s ago 😁. You are right, I’m still making up my mind on the topic, for a few of the reasons you call out here. I do feel that bringing the speculation aspect into this hobby is equal parts inevitable and uneasy, only because (as a collector) it’s more competition for the super rare pieces, and when they do get slabbed, I’m not sure I’m a buyer at that point. I’ve collected cards and comics both over the years, and see some merits of slabbing, especially the old/sealed pieces that are very, very rare and in great condition as/is. Ari makes good points towards that aim, and I agree. I also agree that it’s not for everyone (including myself) but I may change my opinion down the road. I’ve had a lot of trouble with old sealed dead stock that (once opened) had warping or the dreaded ”gassing” effect and then the vinyl is unplayable. It’s changed my approach to buying old sealed pieces, and in those cases I could see employing encapsulation in the right situation. I do appreciate Ari’s new project with Vets, and his enthusiasm for the hobby was sorely needed (by me) of late.
      Hope you had a nice 4th holiday weekend Tom ✌🏻

    I'd like to ask Ari what DFW area record shows he recommends. Are there any in the Tarrant County / Fort Worth area he could recommend? With my limited vision and transportation issues, I've been trying to find something going on that I could attend. Closer to home always makes it easier for me to work out rides and get to them. I've heard of a few here and there but I really don't know what record shows are going on in the DFW area nowadays?

    My biggest issue with this entire slabbing process is that nobody is addressing the elephant in the room, Heritage Auctions and WATA's alleged dodgy auctions setting false high watermark prices for video games, I noticed video games were conveniently not mentioned during the video. Until this is addressed I would be very hesitant about investing in slabbed records.
    While I get why someone may want to slab there vinyl, I don't get why it has to be sealed, not all vinyl records are sold sealed.

    • @ConcertBuddie
      @ConcertBuddie  Месяц назад

      Totally hear you. I only know very loosely about the WATA situation, but what I do know is that any sort of collusion or compromise on standards is bad for everyone. I think back to the Ken Griffey Jr Upper Deck rookie card fiasco in that arena; how the manufacturer had thousands and thousands made + held back and was not forthcoming of that practice and how they were manipulating the marketplace for it. I definitely feel standardization is a must, and feel that regardless of competition, any “grading service” in any hobby needs to adhere to a level playing field. Here in vinyl records, I still look forward to that happening sooner than later. Thanks for watching this piece. 🙏🏻

      @@ConcertBuddie So true, there is a lot of crossover to vinyl from video games, especially with the popularity of video game soundtracks coming out on vinyl these days and those collectors have already seen this before. If the slabbing of vinyl is ever going to be a thing, grading companies need to keep themselves completely independent.
