Things I refrain from saying to others out of respect. Red Lobster is the Walmart of seafood. Olive Garden where they served frozen boiled in a bag entrees and call it Italian Food, breadsticks and salad excluded. 😂 I’m finding that gatekeepers are fewer than supportive viewers. There’s a way to handle GKs that sometimes ends in a Hallmark moment. Sometimes we’re so quick to get defensive that we loose sight of why the GK feels the need to express themselves in such a way. I’ve found that by first validating their feelings and opinion, and even their rude comment, allows for an opportunity for them to see and respect where I’m coming from. It takes a lot of energy. The lucky ones get treated that way. Then there’s those I immediately give a courtesy flush by simply deleting their comment and blocking them. That’s the easy This is MY house option 😤. You’re right, Gatekeepers are everywhere in life. We’re forced to deal with them on a case by case basis. The outcome will only turn out as good or bad as the individual on the other end. I like what Matt said regarding you have to have a thick-skinned approach to the negative, problem causing troll type of people. And if they are real bad or constantly problematic, just blocking them is my recommendation. They won't even know because of the way RUclips is set up. You can't let them get under your skin! Sage advice Brian. I've taken the 'bait" far more than I should have (speaking for myself), but there is a line that gets crossed when people feel they are better off not even being part of the community (VC or otherwise), and that's a real shame. Good chat guys. As a rule record stores populated with assholes don’t make it too long, with the exception of that guy in LA. I also reserve the right to ridicule any modern Crosley Turntable. That’s not being mean, but tough love so folks don’t destroy their records
I live down in San Diego and have made trips up and down the coast for decades now. I’ve been to the Record Collector shop you’re talking about years ago. I lasted maybe 2 minutes there as it’s definitely not a “normal” shop. There’s way too many Record Shop options now a days especially in LA county to put up with any of that.
So true! I haven’t been to SD in a few years, but it had some good shops too (M-Theory, Taang, & Record City come to mind). The guy in LA is something else, like you said when there are a TON of (better) options to choose from. But every collector should experience that guy at least once. Glad you made it out and can tell the tale!
@@ConcertBuddie I’ve been to all the San Diego Record Shops a million times including M-Theory, Taang and Record City. Record City actually moved to a completely different neighborhood a few years back. Next time you visit San Diego hit up Vinyl Junkies (South Park), Cow Records (Ocean Beach) and Spin Records (Carlsbad). Those are some of my favorites!
Very nice conversation, Chance (and Matt.) As to the "Crosley" question, I don't have a problem with someone buying one if they are just buying "thrift store" records ($1-5.) However, if they're dropping $40-70 an album, they are better off getting an entry level turntable (like an Audio Technica) for $125-150, along with a receiver and speakers (I've seen Marantz, Denon & Yamaha receivers under $50 on craigslist and in thrift shops, along with Boston Acoustics & Polk speakers in the same price range.) For $250, they can have a very nice little system to play their "overpriced" vinyl on (sorry, the CD Guy in me slipped out at the end.) I do have a suggestion for the next VC podcast...how about Ms. Concert Buddie & Stacey doing their own discourse on "Help me...I trapped in a relationship with a vinyl collector."
Totally agree with the (obvious to us) upgrade folks should make once they start dropping more coin on their records. I lived this once with friends who had a Crosley and after we returned from shopping at Amoeba (they lived in LA), they went to play a $200+ record on their TT - I had to stop them in their tracks and espouse precisely what you share here - there are levels to this, and now you've unlocked a new level with this purchase, time to "level up" your TT. As for Mrs CB and Stacey, a fine idea, but Mrs CB is keen on staying off camera. She's seen some of the "targeted commentaries" a select few have thrown at me, said about me, made videos about me, etc. and she knows if that would be aimed in her direction, I would break a few necks. So basically it keeps me out of jail :-)
@@ConcertBuddie Sorry, but Mrs. CB has already been featured on RUclips...I believe one of her hands appeared in a Mazzy Wack-a-Mole. In fact, she and Stacey could do the whole video with just their hands being shown across a table from each other...no cuts during the whole 87 min. conversation...while most of the VC will be dumbfounded by it, pretentious pricks, like those found in exile in the wilds of Northern Europe, will proclaim it work of "Godardian cinematic genius, beyond the comprehension of the simple-minded proletariat!" (Just don't try doing it with feet instead of hands; that would just bring the freaks out of their mothers' basements.)
Good conversation mate. I tip my hat to anyone putting themselves out there on YT. It's not something I could do. Us older types have had the luxury of making our mistakes, learning etc behind closed doors and not revealing it on social media. If you put yourself out there and are still too green then unfortunately people are gonna let you know about it. The 'danger' is people have a platform and start talking about a record or genre that they know virtually nothing about and give incorrect information or just sound a bit clueless. But there's plenty of middle aged and older collectors who don't know as much as they think they do. Everyday is school day when it comes to record knowledge, for every single collector bar none. I can assure you you're a real record collector Chance, not that you need my endorsement but sell me your Rodriguez Sugar Man and you'll really go up in my estimations 😄. Regards Nige

I don't think vinyl is all that suitable for discovering new music. It simply costs too much, and almost everything is able to be streamed basically for free. Get the record to hear what it really sounds like. Also, I am thinking I would not want to own a records store, because I'd be like the Record Collector Curmudgeon in LA. I don't want anyone touching my records. They'll scratch them, leave fingerprints, boogers... you name it! - Nice Show and Discussion BTW
What about people walking in with bags stealing vinyl? Retail can be a shite show more and more as we know. The average vinyl buyer orders on Ebay or Amazon -dealers through those networks with Paypal/CC protection against fraud. That record store in LA, over the years prob lost over 40% or more business because the owner chased potential customers away. I would have told him how much I spend on vinyl a month then how it's too bad he will never see a dime from me. I think that owner was just waiting for the value of his property to go up and he's an a hole that likes to f with people. So for him it wasn't about business. In the 70's some record retailers were known to be rude or perhaps rude to customers that rarely bought stuff. They also lost huge revenue over their retail years because of their attitude. They learned that a bad attitude in business, costs money, they pay for it.
Appreciate the kind words, thank you! Very good point about the state of vinyl + higher costs being a barrier to learning new music. Not like it used to be, esp with 45’s back in the day making it easier to try something new. Thanks for watching! Have a great Sunday ✌🏻
Hey Rix, great to hear from you! Totally agree, the real return is def the property - he owns the building, so I’m sure it has softened the need for him to make a lot of revenue selling records over the years, and perhaps made him dig in even more in how coarse he treats new customers. His assistant Henry told us several times each time we visited that Hugh Laurie and Michael Jackson were customers to the store (ie name dropping). My guess is the owner treated them FAR different than young people coming into browse. 🤔
Someone sent me the video about the store in La and asked me my opinion on it. I got a chuckle from his attitude, he probably doesn’t get a lot of Xmas cards. The internet allow people to say what ever they want with almost no consequences. Without the internet we had a little group of people that we knew, now we have a whole world of people we communicate with. That said we now have a lot of unhappy people that have a pulpit to spit bile from. Most of these people could never do it face to face with someone but hidden behind a name they say what3ver they want. Not much you can do about it. You need to have a good blow it off type attitude. I’m very good at that My experiences have been great but I have seen what they do to others, it’s not right but we have to deal with a lot of unhappy people who can not troll
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 well put Steve. It’s simply a bi-product of the culture and like you said the “no consequences” of saying a lot of nasty stuff, often to strangers. I’ve accepted it, but there’s a lot of people new to YT that it’s pushed them off the platform and even out of the hobby altogether, and that the real shame here. That’s what ticks me off about these people and these terms, ya know? Let’s have a great week Steve!
Late to this party, but it's because VC videos don't come up on my feed as much anymore. As a digger, I see the most popular VC channels as snobbish, clout-chasing gatekeepers (no offense, Chance!); pushing only new reissues, with no appreciation for the hobby or (God forbid) the music! Many put me down for collecting comedy and novelty, but that genre saved me from taking my life, so screw 'em! I don't need the hate, nor do I want to hate. I'd rather be a 'nobody' who cares than a 'somebody' who doesn't. (Btw, first Crosleys I saw were at record shows...their only purpose was for testing finds on-site.)
Good to hear from you D - only minor offense taken 😂 . The reissue train (business-wise) probably won’t slow down anytime soon, but hopefully the naïveté from novice collectors about the reissue racket will taper down some. For me, part of the allure of collecting records was/is the hunt and the idea I am giving new life to something that was “my turn” to appreciate, just like my collection will move on from me one day. It’s not as much fun opening a box from Amazon with a brand new record inside, right? ✌🏻
Random sidenote: The classic music snob business owner or kid behind the counter that is much more into music than anyone else could ever be and let’s everyone know with smugness etc has been in this hobby for ages. That will never change. Those “Tell me what you are looking for or get out and “No records for you!” guys are more prevalent than one might think. Nothing new for sure. You are probably familiar with the old Kids In The Hall “Into The Doors” comedy skit. If not, worth the 3 minute watch. Good convo Chance. I’d offer this for consideration… First, if I voice my dislike artist/band/song/album A then I should be ready to also be served a plate of dislike of artist/band/song/album B. Take what I dish out. A more interesting question imo in this area though is: “Ok, you don’t like artist/band/song/album A or B or maybe both, tell me intelligently what are the reasons?” Let’s discuss. Let’s learn. The latter makes for a discussion, the former is more random and confrontational without reason. Tit for tat never really serves much purpose ultimately. And tact, there is that quality which never hurts to inject. I am not too much into these phrases gatekeeping, cancel culture, virtue signaling etc. Certainly the concepts exist but when used as the reason(s), these many times fall short or even mask a good discussion or mischaracterizes what was occuring due to lack of information on the observers part. They can and have become knee jerk labels. By definition it is an assumption to apply these across the board if an opinion does not match up with ours. Or more so if we radically differ from the person. These terms can be used to dismiss as manipulation rather than perhaps there is wisdom in what this person is attempting to share. And then who’s manipulating whom? That which screams injustice becomes the unjustified. Most often these situations are much more nuanced than a label. Not every conversation nor experience ends with happytrails. And when they do not, assumptions are many times one sided. Depending on the perspective and evidence. These labels imo are limiting conversations by not getting to the root as to why the person is closing the gate or why the other is set on continually swinging a gate open. Life is not that cut and dry. Another topic for another time perhaps. Getting back to the exact topic… In the end, to learn WHY an opinion is what it is is more interesting to me. And in doing so I also gain insight to the others taste, why they like what they like and may in the process be introduced (at least in the case of music) to new genres that I once had less knowledge and acceptance of. I believe that folks and this includes myself, are too easily offended and many times even shy away from conflict. That isn’t to say we should be looking for conflict around every corner, but rather what can we gain in a musical journey by allowing respectful differences to occur. Life is not all positive and if this more robotic, less personal experience of youtube/social media is to grow into a more personal and interesting experience (aka real life) then it must grow beyond what it is. Can it? I don’t know. But unless it does (and really mostly has not) then this is why topics are repetitive or a struggle with much eventually becoming a hamster wheel of stale. To allow varying aspects of opinion with the mindset of “what can I learn?” rather than “how can I show I am correct?!” I would think is a more interesting approach. Seems to me that this would also remedy to a degree the generational gap concerning musical tastes. Or not. More importantly, are we ok with this chasm? Even more importantly for me is “What am I missing that this person is attempting to share with me that I just completely cut off due to my box I continue to place myself in?” I don’t have to like Glenn Miller Band, nor do you have to like Lead Belly. Now tell me why you like them please? Art is interactive and even the listener is part of the artistry. Conflict is natural. Especially in art. How much was Elvis’ musical style fostered by support or grown through literally grinding against the system? Not simply conflict for conflicts sake. Not deconstructiveness but coal to diamond gentle pressure. It does not have to get to the point of Indianna Jones saying to the evil Beloq “Now, you’re just getting nasty” But if it does, what we ultimately do is free will to do that which we do. How we grow and what we learn from this as mankind, even in and I would say especially in our musical journey, can make the journey more fulfilling. What we do with that conflict can inspire creativity, imagination and growth. And I agree equipment shaming is not cool. Equipment profiles make little to no sense as useful. Unless I have exactly the same system as the one described and even furthermore the room in which you are listening to said system in, then how in the world am I possibly going to make much of your judgement on sound quality opinions? But even in this there could be the question: “You know your system is way better than mine, I admit. What suggestions do you have?” Approach is important and can disarm or weaponize. “I don’t want to be a product of my environment, I want my environment to be a product of me”- Jack Nicholson Is this wise?
Thoughtful POV John. I agree with much of what you shared here. I think if others were more open-minded on the "why" of any disagreement, and civil about discussing it, there would be a lot more of a "communal" vibe overall. I am the first to say I don't know everyone, won't know everything, but enjoy surrounding myself with people who know a TON about things I've interested in so that I can hopefully draft some of their tribal knowledge into my head. On a select few I've encountered in the VC, the rush to judgment and condemnation is faster than anything I can recall; fueled likely by some territorial thing, perhaps even a jealously thing, I dunno, but I've never understood why some "authors of anger" choose to go 0-60 in the shame game instead of opening a dialogue to find common ground and (gasp) perhaps TEACH the other something rather than yell at them, slight them, or make them feel lesser about themselves by simply opening the conversation. It's a real shame, IMO, that this "Twitter" approach has pushed several people out of the community, and then those select authors of acrimony then gloat about it, like it was a good thing. Seems like cowardice disguised as confidence, to me. Great to hear from you as always John! Hope you are well sir -
Closest I know is when Rob the Waxed and some other LA collectors went in there and talked about it in a video, but did not get a lot of footage or speak with Sandy Chase (owner) or Henry (assistant) on camera. Plus, I think he knew one of the group (Jim - RCN). I was contacted a long time ago by a documentary group to use my Yelp review in their feature about the owner, but it must have not gotten off the ground/finish line. I bet I wonder why...
Chance, I *could* teach you how to develop great taste in music, but I won’t because 1) I’m very insecure in my own tastes and 2) I invested so many decades and money becoming a music aficionado, why should I just give away that precious knowledge to some rando? Good conversation!
For social media I believe content creators should have someone else read & block/delete comments.
The negative ones hurt even when you know they are not true.
Getting a summary of the good comments is enough to keep you going without over inflating your ego.
I like this idea. Would take any emotion/knee jerk reactions out of a lot of this. Thanks for bringing this to the table, and watching!
Interesting thoughts about trolling. I always think of the internet as the manifastation of that film 'Liar Liar' Suddenly people are happy to say whatevers on their mind (although the cloak of anonymity also helps) Ive been pretty lucky (& looking at your comments below it seems your aware you might have got sucked in on occasion) Ive always dealt with those comments with humour & a smiley. It also helps that a lot of the time I'm trolling myself. It seems to work. Dude! Vinyl Reckoning hit the nail on the head! All you do when you judge other people for what they listen to and how they listen to it, is make yourself look nerdier. I’m finding that gatekeepers are fewer than supportive viewers. Sage advice Brian. I've taken the 'bait" far more than I should have (speaking for myself), but there is a line that gets crossed when people feel they are better off not even being part of the community (VC or otherwise), and that's a real shame. Others simply do not know how to play nice, or not saying anything at all. All we can do is try to be better than yesterday, and be inclusive where others have not been.
Very nice conversation, Chance (and Matt.) As to the "Crosley" question, I don't have a problem with someone buying one if they are just buying "thrift store" records ($1-5.) However, if they're dropping $40-70 an album, they are better off getting an entry level turntable (like an Audio Technica) for $125-150, along with a receiver and speakers (I've seen Marantz, Denon & Yamaha receivers under $50 on craigslist and in thrift shops, along with Boston Acoustics & Polk speakers in the same price range.) For $250, they can have a very nice little system to play their "overpriced" vinyl on (sorry, the CD Guy in me slipped out at the end.)
I do have a suggestion for the next VC podcast...how about Ms.

Random sidenote:
The classic music snob business owner or kid behind the counter that is much more into music than anyone else could ever be and let’s everyone know with smugness etc has been in this hobby for ages.
I’d offer this for consideration…
First, if I voice my dislike artist/band/song/album A then I should be ready to also be served a plate of dislike of artist/band/song/album B. Take what I dish out.
A more interesting question imo in this area though is:
“Ok, you don’t like artist/band/song/album A or B or maybe both, tell me intelligently what are the reasons?” Let’s discuss.
Getting back to the exact topic…
In the end, to learn WHY an opinion is what it is is more interesting to me.
Even more importantly for me is “What am I missing that this person is attempting to share with me that I just completely cut off due to my box I continue to place myself in?”
I don’t have to like Glenn Miller Band, nor do you have to like Lead Belly.
But even in this there could be the question:
“You know your system is way better than mine, I admit. What suggestions do you have?”
Approach is important and can disarm or weaponize.
“I don’t want to be a product of my environment, I want my environment to be a product of me”- Jack Nicholson
Is this wise?
