I'll buy online from a reputable store. Most people can't grade packaging & vinyl correctly just as most can't grade sport cards correctly. Buy in person & be careful as the scam is on via the internet ! Greed , is NOT good.

I think what really killed the vinyl market is the exorbitant seller fees on discogs. It fucks the seller and buyers by at least 30%. I would also say that the hype and mania surrounding vinyl revival post-covid was unsustainable. Vinyl companies and labels got greedy with all their wildly over-priced gimmicky releases and reissues. They really felt like fans and vinyl nerds would pay anything for anything. When new releases cost $40-60 retail and close to double that on the secondary market, the value simply is just NOT there anymore. As much as i love vinyl I have slowed down considerably. Now I only buy what I find in the wild and is fairly priced

Another great vid! I recently had an eBay feeding frenzy of my own after being blown away by a recent concert by The Damned, suddenly feeling a great need to replace some long-gone 45s (kicked off by scoring a signed-by- Vanian copy of GENERALS at the merch table). I found a dealer with a few unplayed ‘85 Big Beat reissues (LOVE SONG Dave cover, SMASH IT UP), plus the’82 LIVELY ARTS green vinyl, all of which I used to have, all appear to be Tower mark-downs with a corner clip, but I don’t care! I also found the criminally less-known Magic Michael MILLIONAIRE 45 (backed by the guys during the MACHINE GUN ETIQUETTE sessions, and it sounds just like it), the one U.S. listing on eBay, for a reasonable price too! It’s not dead for me yet, but I sort of prefer saving up for an annual record show over hitting stores with pocket-busting frequency. Plus, there’s boutique blu-rays to buy!

Some interesting points there Dan. Regarding the Millennium S/S copy. Well, once you open it up, it isn't a S/S copy anymore, so you'd have to list it as Mint, and lose out on the bucks. Plus, always read the small print in ads. The one that cracks me up is, "visually graded by using a strong light". How many records have you got that look great, but in fact are so-so sounding?
As they say, "One man's mint..." My god! I would definitely avoid the Goldenrod album just by looking at the pics!

It’s the beginning of the end, I saw this coming around 2018. In a way it’s a good thing, the bubble will burst and things will go back to normal for us longtime collectors. Along with the crappy reissues they keep releasing, quality control issues that never get resolved. The public is getting tired of it. Most of the albums I’m selling on Discogs are mainly reissues that didn’t meet my liking. I think in the next couple of years, used record store bins will be filled with these new reissues, mark my words.

There are other reasons for the death of vinyl -
    - Record store day has become boring with a lot of the day's specials being colored pressings, live albums and and just average stuff.
    - The cost of vinyl versus other formats such as cd and downloads is exorbitant.
    - The vinyl itself is cut off a cd digital master - with no reference to the orginal analogue master tape. In effect the vinyl sounds the same as cd.
    - the cost of a good quality record deck, stylus, phono stage is into the thousands before you have bougt any vinyl.

I did a lot of online buying when I first got online in the early 00s. It was access to US psych or soul/funk records that I would have never found here in the UK. Still ended up with plenty of VG records sold as VG+ but they were relatively cheap so it was easier to live with. But as record prices/p&p went up and grading got worse I slowed right down to the point I rarely buy online now. I'll be at the market tomorrow and will have that excitement only real world digging delivers. Will I find a rare long time want cheap? Highly unlikely but I'll still get a buzz and find something I didn't know I needed... hopefully. UK sellers are the worst imho. Can't grade and charge more than anyone else in the world. Side note: Never buy old sealed records is my usual standard. Too risky. Sealed records are for sissies.
Price increases, so do not shop online?
I do agree that prices obviously have gone up. This mainly happened during the “we are bored, hey lets buy a record player!” “we are bored, lets spend our football/concert money on more records” pandemic days. No doubt that in general the market went nutso bizzaro for whatever reasons between 2018-2021. I do think those prices you are showing are extreme and do not really reflect the overall market. But point taken.
Deception in record selling? Nah, tell me it isnt true! ;)
In a free market society “buyer beware” should be a given. Be smart in your shopping. Tricky car salesmen are in every area of the marketplace. This is not something new with records. Example: In the early 00’s I purchased a sealed (yes I broke my rule becauss of the price) fairly rare album. Opened it and it was obviously a resealed lp. Had scratches all over and even fingerprints (I mean at least clean the fingerprints all over the thing off lol). Then when confronted the guy gave me this long “my dog ate my homework” story. Lesson learned.
    Point?
Deceptive sellers have been around in this hobby since the beginning. Nothing new. Be smarter and don’t knee jerk. If it is too good to be true, guess what? It probably isn’t true.
    Grading worse?
This one Im iffy about. Ive been a record/lp/45 hobbyist since 1984 and first started buying used through mail with Goldmine Magazine (remember all those tiny bunches up hand written ads to sift through with a magnifying glass? Ha) Grading was not always consistent then either. And there was little recourse. Also, you got ripped off in a Goldmine auction? Sorry for your badluck.
Im not so sure that grading has gotten worse as the mass quanities and opportunity to buy has increased, thus increasing the amount of poor grading. But I can maybe go with the idea that grading has became an increased dicey proposition.
Again though, buyer beware is the phrase of the day.
I still buy online but unlike with the old Goldmine days the advantage, if one will take the time, is we can have an online convo with someone. Heck we can even FT to see the item we are buying. Press the seller. If they refuse to communicate, move on. There are literally thousands upon thousands to choose from.
In the end it falls on the buyer to have a list of many records that he or she is searching for. Don’t get stuck on a list of five and panic. Make a list of 100 and be patient. Make the numbers and percentages work in your favor. Find trusted buyers online that you can buy several albums for a cheaper shipping cost. Dont be afraid to ask a seller for a deal. And don’t discount reissues. There are tons of well done, great sounding reissued lps out there. Yes, there are tons of poorly done reissues also. Again, this falls on the buyer to educate, read reviews, network etc.
I can’t really agree that record buying online is dead. It is just a bigger game that brings both disadvantages and advantages.
I also think that the stance of record buying online is dead may be due to a bit of bias. It is easy to make that statement if one has local record shops, lives in or near bigger towns for garage and estate sales etc. For those of us who live in the sticks? Online record buying is about it. So we have to either be smart and patient or be knee jerk/impatient and get screwed.
Take your time, buyer beware, ask questions, make deals, think before you push that button etc and buying online can be a great experience still.
Thanks for the video buddy! Good stuff to think about even if we do not completely agree 👍🏻👍🏻🎸

I wonder what reason a person would buy a $2,000.00 record for, because it sure as hell not for superior audio fidelity.

I think it's about connecting w a good dealer. I buy reggae records online all the time. I got guys I've been getting from for years. Most records I get are from Jamaica. So I don't think it's true. I got 2 huge record stores in my back yard(,Jerry's used records and the attic) no good reggae.....so enjoy your records!

Click bait here!! Countless numbers of vinyl records are purchased online from Amazon and independent stores that ship! Try another angle to get views

@@davepounds8924Dave. Of course it’s clickbait. A lot of albums are sold online. Always will be…..but do you not think $2000 K for an original Thriller is a bit much? It’s meant for Entertainment purposes Dave. Obviously not for you. That’s okay. I appreciate the comment and perspective. Have a good one! ☝️
