  • Have you ever thought about opening a record store? Our guest on this latest 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts thought about it - and did it! Joined by Billy Hurst, owner of RiverBend Records in Godfrey, Illinois, we pick his brain on just how he turned the dream most record collectors have into a bona fide reality. Before we get there, we learn about Billy's experience as part of the "Vinyl Community" on RUclips, his background in record collecting, and then what led him to the fateful decision to start a record store in the middle of a pandemic (really). RiverBend Records has been opened for just over three years, and there have been many learnings and challenges that Billy will share with us. Since opening, his shop has endeared itself not just to the local community (and St. Louis metro area), but has gained a following selling records through the Facebook platform on Monday nights. We'll learn more about that (including the last sale of 2023 the day this airs - Monday, December 18th, 6pm Central), and what future state + goals the shop has for the future. Been looking forward to doing this sitdown for sometime, and hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Like Billy, I too always kept buying vinyl after CDs took over. I really wasn't listening to LP's for almost 30 years but I always planned on getting back into it. It's always been my favorite music format and it's what I grew up with. I'd be down in Houston for the weekend and visiting various record stores, or maybe in Austin doing the same, and even though I didn't have a turntable hooked up and I was buying CDs and a lot of bootleg CDs, I'd still be buying vinyl LPs as well. And then when CD burners, and later wideband internet came along, I started trading CDRs (around 1998) of the non-official music and then downloading the lossless FLAC/SHN files where it was much easier through Torrance sites to get lower generation copies of concerts, outtakes, etc of the unreleased music. I still do that today. But I kept on purchasing vinyl even if it was sporadically at times. I don't know why it took me so long to finally go out and buy another turntable and start getting back into vinyl like I always had planned. But whatever the reason was, I'm glad I did it. And while I still occasionally will buy a CD of something I'm interested in, 99% of what I'm buying today are LPs. If I buy a CD it's just because I want to make it easy to take the music with me and I don't feel like ripping the album to a CDR. I just wish cars still came with CD players haha. It doesn't matter much since I'm legally blind and can't drive now. But the fact that cars don't come with CD players is a big reason I don't buy more CDs to be able to take on the road when I'm riding with friends. I'd still be buying the vinyl first, but I would be buying CDs or at least ripping them more often if the vehicles were equipped with CD players :-)

Always great to hear from you Brian! I’ve been guilty of dropping formats over the years, but not anymore. The reacquisition costs are a pain in the butt. 😂 Happiest of Holidays sir!

@@ConcertBuddie Haha very true on those reacquisition costs 🤔 Who would have ever thought vinyl records would become more expensive than CDs all of these years later? I hope you and your family have a great Christmas and Happy New Year also Chance! Talk with you later...

Terrific interview once again. Seems like the kind of guy that I would like to work for. Or at least just show up everyday and eventually he will have to pay me.

Great interview. I thought Chance was making an announcement about opening his own shop. So cool about Billy working with the St. Louis Cardinals.

This was a lot of fun✌️ loved hearing all about the store from the ground up. I dont like dwelling on negative things also, but I cant help being curious about the one guy Billy had to ask to leave 😁 and id also like to offer my services as a fully armed Nerf security guard absolutely free of charge. MERRY CHRISTMAS Y'ALL!
