Advice 5: Alternatively, bring the character to another game. Say they fell through a portal and wound up in the new world or something, and their goal can be to return home, or if you put them in a game where they're starting at a lower level than where they currently are, give them some kind of brain damage or curse that causes them to forget who they were until they're up to where they are currently. A friend of mine played a campaign where his character got up to level 9, and then when he started a from-level-1 campaign, he dropped the same character in, but gave him amnesia and changed him from a rogue to a monk; after a while, he got sucked into the hells and that somehow caused him to remember who he used to be, and he's been playing his old character since then in the new campaign, so it's totally doable.

Advice 1: I'm wondering if the moving the sessions to monthly from weekly is also a bit of them taking the toy back after someone else picks it up, to use Jack's metaphor. Like, yes, they may be burned out, but it could also be a situation where they want to extend their ability to DM for as long as possible to prevent OP from getting into that position. I feel like OP should just hold onto the campaign they have as a campaign, and just let the current game run its course and have something to start up and have ready to go as soon as the game is done, or suggest playing their game during off-weeks after another session or two of DM's game to get it moving if they really want to start. The current DM's attitude shouldn't dictate OP's ability to play and run their own game.

It hurts me deep in my poor suburban girlie heart that yall don't have Bath & Body Works. Where do you get your perfumed lotions? Your nigh-unusable, but lovely scented hand sanitizers? Those candles are so worth the hype though. Some of the scents you don't even have to light to make a room smell good. Obviously, depends on how big the room is, but for a while I don't even burn them. I just open them for a little while. As long as you keep the lids on when you're not using them the fragrance oils in those last for ages. And when I do burn them down I use the canisters to store wax melts of the same scent and that keeps those from drying out too.

The big differencesbetween DOS2 and BG3, for me: 1. Bg3 is far more personalized, with a ton of options for character creation. You’re very limited in divinity, and the camera never gets down into a proper 3rd person perspective, it’s always above, so it feels less personal. 2. No real cinematics, mostly text boxes and things happening in the same top perspective. 3. D&D is far more popular now than it was in 2017. 4. Divinity itself paved the way for BG3, so I genuinely don’t think bg3 would have been as popular (and certainly wouldn’t have happened) without Divinity. 5. The companions are FAR more interactive, and you have a much greater feeing of choice impacting the narrative The similarities are fantastic, and you can see their growth from one game to the next, but BG3 has a ton of improvements that appeal to a wider audience.

Ok, hi, had this randomly pop up in my feed. I have lots of thoughts about the 2nd story. As a DM for about 6-7 years and a d&d player for nearly 10, I’d say this person has to speak up. What is happening is others taking away the character’s agency and ability to tell their story. The character needs to be allowed to discover their own path and to decide for themselves. If the other players just “convert” him at the beginning… where is the story? His story is over. As for the other player butting in on other player’s stories. This screams “I cant make my own character and needs to be the center of *everyone’s* stories”. They need to be connected to all the plots so they don’t miss out when the story isn’t about them. It’s not unsalvageable, but it’s teetering towards a toxic mindset. Now I might just be reading into this, but I’ve had players like this. Communication is Key in any d&d game, and if someone says *No*, then back off, esp if you are asking to be a part of their storyline.

Maybe I'm too petty, but if I was in that party with the 2 players who make everyone sit in silence as they roleplay their prewritten stuff, I would literally time the amount of time those two players are hogging vs the amount of time the other players actually get to participate, and just flat out say that it's not fair.

If Bully is our problem does that mean he's our dog now too? Yes? Perfect! Story 2: i mean maybe its just my experiences with my group but this is the type of conversation regarding characters interacting to this extent that would've happened IRL before it was introduced in the game!

Algorithm boost

For Tea, the person with aphantasia, a good idea could be playing online using something like One More Multiverse. It's like a little pixel art D&D tool/game that runs on your browser where you can create worlds, combats (enemies with set health & attack stats), characters & simple character sheets, etc and move them around the map. There's lots of premade modules from what I can tell, but you can also make worlds up from scratch. I'm sure there's probably a discord or some kind of LFG, plus it has a built in safety system so you can put what topics/themes/visuals you're ok with, dubious about, or straight up don't want in your games. It's super visual so for someone who struggles to mentally visualise things, it could be a big help :)

the random table one hit me because I'm literally basing a whole campaign off of random tables it's specifically meant to be a not very serious funny campaign but still I love the random tables as long as the effects are interesting and the people know what they are getting into like giving the deck of many things to someone who has no idea is bad of course.

I've been a lurker since episode 40-ish & as a woman living alone with ADHD I use your podcast to "body double" or, basically help me focus on mundane tasks that I struggle with such as cooking, cleaning, etc. I'm also currently packing to move to another country, so when I say it has felt far longer than a week, I say it with my full chest. Many takeout meals were ordered, and no cleaning (or packing) has gotten done. There is no other podcast that I click with nearly as much as yours. This is all to say, you were very heavily missed, though I'm glad you were able to take time off, all 3 of you (Bully included) deserve a break whenever you need it. But know you are truly and sincerely missed. Looking forward to your future episodes and streams, as well as finally getting some housework done before I move to get married and live with my soon-to-be-wife. ♥

40:46 i hate dealing with eating & rations specifically. at my tables i have like a weekly or monthly “charge” that just covers always having rations, maintained weapons, camp fire, water, etc. also i just ask my party to be reasonable abt their inventory. if they can explain how they have 4 great swords on their person, then let’s go

19:23 in my games, we actually rule that an attacking cantrip can be used as opportunity attacks. That way it doesn’t get too broken and overshadow WarCaster. I do see where this is coming, most combats do just turn into “Roll to Hit! High AC enemy, Get WRECKED!” and it’s just draining. I saw one house rule that said “Once you’ve hit an enemy once, you’re just rolling to see if you’re critting, which I get. 22:54 I NEVER UNDERSTAND THIS! why is a Nat1 to hit always an auto hit on an ally? My nearest ally is 30ft away, does my HEAVY weapon just slip out of my hand and just conveniently hit the squishiest ally. This actually happened at my table, and one of the players said that it really bugged them that a Nat1 only ever seemed to effect the PCs, so our DM changed it 35:40 I’ve noticed spells like Invisibility, Silence, or even Fly, people think these spells/abilities are broken but they’re really not. For me, they’re the Mewtwo of spells, beginners are gonna overuse it, but more experienced players know there’s MUCH BETTER work around.

I actually like that mimic bag of holding item, but as a separate item and not a replacement for the bag of holding. That sounds fun like if you just had them find a thing that looks like a bag of holding and it's nice and light for their characters to carry, but something just seems Off about it? And then one day they loot just one more thing or they're out shopping and [Witch Cackle] roll for initiative! Love that. Love that so much. I'm grabbing that with both of my yucky gremlin hands and running away now, byyye ♥

That third one. Oh god lmao. Putting a short timer on me would absolutely kill the game for me. My adhd brain does not deal with sharp time constraints well. I freeze! Guaranteed my character is going to stand there while we all get ripped to shreds.

Final Rule: That is fun, but broken. A way to fix it could be to do hit confirmation: if you still succeed, make the roll a second time, and if the second roll is also a success, it's a crit. Otherwise, it's a normal success.

Penultimate Rule: That sounds to me like the DM read the rules about how the Beast Master Ranger's features work and decided to implement them, but did them totally wrong. If OP was a Beast Master Ranger, commanding their animal to perform an Attack, Dash, Disengage, Dodge, or Help Action costs them an action, while commanding them to do anything else costs nothing; there isn't anything that costs the Ranger a bonus action for their beast until level 7, where commanding it Dash, Disengage, Dodge, or Help costs the Ranger's bonus action instead of an action. But even then, it sounds like OP wasn't having it do anything but move out of combat, which doesn't cost anything ever.

Fifth Rule: This sounds like the DM wanting to give lore to where mimics come from and doing it in the stupidest way possible.

Unarmed attack with that natural 1 rule and the weapon breaks... so my arms snap in half and drop on the floor?

Fourth Rule: That DM gives the same vibes as stories of players who mainline fire-based magic, and suddenly every monster has immunity to fire damage. Bet he nerfed every spell he could in the same way, or just straight-up banned spells he couldn't think of ways to nerf.

Third Rule: Okay, cool. So then the DM gets, what, 3 seconds to figure out what any subhuman monster with an INT Score of 6 is going to do on their turn? Gotta have it work both ways, right?

First Rule: One of the tables I play at has this rule, as a joke. One of their players had two characters who died, and they left the table after the second character died, so I came in to fill in his spot. Oddly, I'd played in a one-off guest spot alongside the player who'd left, and the character I'd played in that one-off died offscreen afterwards. The character I brought into the game died a long time afterward, the only other PC besides the one whose player left to have been killed. So the question jokingly came up of whether or not I should still be at the table, since technically two of my characters had died at that point. I went on and made my "third" character for the campaign, which is on pause constantly; I've been able to play as the new character I believe 3 times over the last two years. I read the rule as it's written as, "You make a character, they die without being resurrected, you make a second new character, they die without being resurrected, you're out."

When attacked, you can attack back as reaction. 22:46 - Critical failures break your weapon. 26:00 - Timer based off of a stat 33:12 - A bag of holding only holds 30 lbs (13.6 Kilos) and turns into a mimic if overfull. 44:44 - My pet raven was killed in combat (it was a non-combat pet) 51:29 - Hero rolls - roll with disadvantage but its an auto crit if its a hit.

I'm a warlock and I have a pet familiar. He was created when I threw a fireball on a dying man, pig and raven. So now he's a pig with wings and the most annoying voice ever. He sucks at almost everything. Instead of nerfing him, my DM made my character basically donate her blood which increased his intelligence ridiculously. What monster have I created lol.

Wow.. thats aweful. I get the motivation, i've had parties try and loot whole rooms and giant decorations. So I tend to enforce the, if it cannot fit in the openning it ain't going in. The weight? My rule of thumb is just don't take the piss. Ie not carrying five great axes.
