I think people conflate "slow to trust" with "paranoid". Rather, "slow to trust" should usually just be taken as "slow to build personal relationships". My "lone wolf" character came into the party acting essentially like they're a contractor; they're there to do a job and trusts that everyone there is competent enough to do the job. But they didn't start having connections with other memebers until some characters made a point to show they cared about my character beyond just being another adventurer.

17:44 Op filled out a 32 page character questionnaire and feels like it has been under utilized.
29:50 Op is just no longer enjoying the campaign anymore because of reasons. They end up checking out mentally.
41:34 Is OP wrong for letting a player come back as a changeling pretending to be their old character.
48:51 Is OP an asshole for not trusting another character in the party?

  • @Gamerdudegames
    @Gamerdudegames 2 месяца назад +5

about that last one: "plays a collaborative, team-based game / plays a character who doesn't trust the party or talks to anyone or opens up at all" either the lone wolf character needs to be banned by the DM or the player needs to be a good enough roleplayer to still let the character actually open up, even if it's done slowly. This is why I don't allow backstory secrets between players; secrets between characters is fine but don't keep your fellow players in the dark.

I'm a lurker in the server and listen on Spotify as well. But I can relate to what you said at the beginning Margaret, even though you made me cry about my dad at work lol. Grief really is a rollercoaster sometimes and I also take the time to reflect on how my dad affected my life so positively too. Much love and thank you for being so transparent and relatable 💜

Tearing up hearing about Mag's dad, grief is one of the weirdest emotional things to go through, I won't go into detail but I've lost so many people in my life and it's always heartbreaking, but sharing those happy memories is so important, I think it's always important to remember your loved ones, talking is so important, grief hurts but shared love eases it. Thank you for your openness 💜

Thanks for feeling your feelings and sharing. Hearing Margaret talk about her dad was wonderful. 💜
I’m in my 40ies and the refrain growing up was ‘why do you have to be like *that*?’ and I wish families realised just how much damage this attitude does. It’s really not that hard to just pause for a moment and peer over the rim of that box you’ve put yourself in. Hearing you two talk about this I felt really recognised. (also I now live 1000 miles away from my family so…)

I started tearing up right along with you Mags when you were talking about your dad, my mum passed 12 years ago and I couldn't talk about her until recently, it does take intentional effort but it's so worth it! I sometimes feel childish for crying about her, so seeing you talk openly about your grief on stream has come at just the right time to remind me it's okay, so thank you ❤️

Mags I really appreciate how open you are talking about your dad. I appreciate you showing how sad it makes you. It really hits me in my feels as well, makes me think of when my dad passed away as well. It makes me appreciate the bond I formed with you guys thanks to the podblast.

11:20 that full saying is "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" so even then they knew family wasn't always the end all be all
57:00 it sounds like OP trusted other party members w/backstory just not the angel. Could be the DM needs to encourage both of them to meta make some bridges

The penultimate story had a really cool plotline and I don't know why the rest of the party acted so weird about it. Unrestful!

Fourth Story: The fact that OP was lied about by villains to B could be a way for OP's character to come to B and actually build a sort of relationship there. Maybe showcase a lack of hostility, and even open up a bit to show that they're sincere about the friendship they want to build with that character. It kind of feels like that could be the reason the DM did what they did: to make OP's character be forced to prove themselves, and become more trusting and open to the person that is most opposed to them in terms of alignment, and thus open up more to everyone else. I could be reading too much into it, but I feel like OP's character having a conversation with B's to sort of open up and show that they can be trusted would be beneficial, and could be a good way to grow the character; even if it's not what the character would normally do, OP's character could see the lack of belief in them as a result of their prior behavior, and talk to B as a way to start to change.

My party recently teamed up with a very powerful NPC. He helped but always as a last resort. I didn't want to take anything away from them while meeting this big deal character.

With that third one it's so weird to me that the other players immediately jumped to it being that the person was playing their character "wrong". I would want to figure out what happened to this character to make them act differently, it's so so so weird that they basically didn't have enough faith in the player to play their character correctly, and even tried to *play their character for them*.
It feels so strange that they wouldn't even consider that it was part of the plot. It's like they had no faith in the player to know what they were doing at all.
I also think it was fine that it was kept a secret from the other players. It sounds like if the other players had played cooperatively, it would have been a really fun mystery to uncover as the characters spend more time together.

7:10 my dad sounds a lot like your dad Margaret 😢 he also passed away in 2020 and it’s been so hard. I try to remember that the suffering we feel only exists as one side of a deep love I got to experience. You sharing this made me feel less alone in my grief

Sorry to hear about your father mags, but you way you speak about him shows what an amazing person he was. Yeah I totally get the older generation really being less understanding, my mum has never really understood me playing DnD or trying RUclips. For a little context on her level, when Trump was president in the USA my British mum was like “he makes some good points”. But yes you can’t choose who you come from but you can choose your family! 💜
Yeah I think there is nothing wrong with using inspiration from other films, books, tv shows, I know I have as a DM, I might have used a few things from the discworld series haha.

Aw Mags I’m getting emotional about you talking about your parents. It hits home for me because I don’t have much longer with either of my parents. We all love you and you are both the reason the podblast community is so amazing. I’m so glad I found this channel.

In one of my campaigns a player complains about the amount of Roleplay which is miniscule and there's a whole other host of problems with that player. I can't help but laugh because my Astral Sea campaign (separate from the other one) hasn't had a fight in over 10 4-5 hour sessions and not a single complaint about it.
This is relevant to something said in the podcast briefly sorry.

I always feel a bit silly talking about grief, because the only loss I've really experienced is that of my childhood pet. It felt so disorientating because she was older than me, so I didn't know a life without her. About a year into my current relationship - which is my first relationship - I just had this moment of "Oh. My partner will never meet this cat who I love dearly and was a core part of my life." and even though at that point it had been about 4 years since she passed, it felt like I had just lost her all over again.

Second Story: I wonder if the referential stuff OP is referring to is as minor as "I put in a location from a game I like into the game", or if it's a guy in a village named Rick who makes pickles, and just shouts, "I'm Pickle Rick!" all the time. Or even if it's player characters in-character comparing things that happen in-game to, like, movies or whatever. Or possibly even as egregious as the DM having watched some Star Trek show and deciding that the Enterprise is going to fly down into a high fantasy setting because they think it'd be cool, when there's been zero sci-fi stuff in the world until then. I could see the latter examples being extremely annoying if they're happening a lot.

From the sounds of it for that last submission it seems as tho the dm didnt really have a plan entering their arc as they really could of played off that angel demon thing more effectively leading to a moment that would be satisfactory. Im more sure of this because the dm didnt have the same abilities and goodies for them than the others. Kinds smelly to me tbh

...32 pages. Absolutely not. I know there's always going to be a certain amount of homework in ttrpgs, but that's wild. To spend months setting up your characters and getting ready to play had to have set up the expectation that this was going to be an amazing game. I don't know what a DM would have to do to make me feel that that was worth it, but that's not it lol.
