Jack, it sounds like there needs to be a D&D riddle which involves the party cutting the actual grass to solve it. Just saying 😂😂

That was such beautiful advice on how to gently send off a player at the table that you just don't connect with properly. Very well said.

First Story: If it wasn't for OP being uncomfortable around this guy, and was just the backstory stuff, I'd say to keep them around and literally work every other character's backstory into the plot but theirs, and then when they ask about it, be like "I never got any information about your backstory at all, how was it supposed to get into the plot of the game?" But if OP wants to get rid of them, they should be able to, though I wonder if it has to do with the rest of the table being friends with him. Like, if OP kicks him, will he complain to his friends? If OP vents or explains their reasons for kicking him to the other players, will they go and tell him, causing him to retaliate somehow? That might be the actual concern.

For the picking classes, I like the "pick a few you want" but instead of surprising them with it, make it an eventual choice within the game.

That’s 2nd story with Ethan is me rn with my new adventure, but you’re buddy Matt’s method is what I’m doing and I agree it’s been a huge relief once I started writing and setting up the “bones” of an area and it’s up to all of us to flesh it out. Great question!

Hello! It’s Ethan! Thank you for the advice, and yes I’m bloodedbaron on twitch.
I think I am putting a lot of pressure on myself because I actually do D&D for my job. I only get good reviews so far but I hold myself to a really high standard because it’s paid. That being said your advice is really helpful! Thank you

Final Story: If the god is about betrayal, give the character dreams that basically communicate that if they leave or betray the party, it will somehow help their sick loved one. If the offering was meant to fully cure them, the god could lie and imply that the offering only staved off the illness, and to continue keeping their loved one healthy, the character must do things that go against the party, or even against their own nature, and they feel somewhat compelled to do these things, subconsciously believing it's the right thing to do. They'd start to question why they think that doing these things that go against how they'd normally act is okay, and that could be the setup for their downfall into paranoia. I also really like the idea of running into others who have been affected by this god, but maybe having them be, like, completely ruined and destitute, having completely lost everything to the deceit of this entity. Maybe they come for the warlock to kill them in order to "save" them, to prevent them from becoming another victim of this god. Or maybe it's promised others afflicted by its lies something in exchange for them going after the party. It could even be someone affected by the god who comes to the warlock to explain what their patron actually is, as a warning about what kind of a horrible entity it is.

Second Story: The concept for the game and the thing of characters gaining a class based on their backstory sounds great, but even if the brother is right and it turned out to be not as great as it sounds, it's also OP's first campaign. They're allowed to do weird experimental stuff and have it blow up and fail, because that's part of the learning process. The brother should've said something along the lines of "Doing something like that might be tough to pull off, you might want to do something a bit more generic and simple for your first campaign" if he was really worried about the players' experiences being ruined by OP choosing the wrong class for each of them. The way he condescended OP's idea rather than helping her by providing tips like the two of you did (which were all exactly what I was thinking OP should do, too) is weird.

Idk if that first one is so cut and dry. I think the rest of the group should be talked with before you just boot this player. I agree that you don't need an excuse to not vibe with someone, and as the DM you are forced to interact with them. But this is a friends DND gathering, not a game you are running for people you don't know. The post gave us little context, but we don't know how often these friends gather. Everyone in the post were adults who presumably have jobs and other responsibilities at this point in their lives. To just say "well you can start a different game with the rest of the group" is unrealistic.
As DM, there is definitely an element that it is "your game". And as a DM myself, I would agree that there is a level of control we need to be able to have over "our" table. But this is also a gathering of friends, and I don't believe the DM gets to arbitrate the friend group. They are more than valid to express that they don't want to dm for this person, but talk with the table.
As you said, if the DM was just a player, this would be easier, because they could just interact with them less, or leave the table if needed. But as DM, you are the center piece of this gathering and are forced into interaction with this player. I'm not saying this is the definite resolution, but the answer may be that you might be better off stepping down as DM. If you talk with your table and they really want to hang out with this friend still, that might be the better option for the group.
To be clear, cause I know im probably explaining my thoughts poorly, this DM is totally justified to not vibe with this person and to ask them to leave the game. But I do think when it comes to organizing DND with friends, you are dedicating a significant amount of your friend group's time they spend together on a regular basis. And I don't think you as DM should have full control over that group gathering.
Maybe this group has tremendous free time and can gather multiple times a week and so this isn't actually a problem to even consider. But if this is their once a week get together, and they can't find an additional time to hang out with K separately, then you might have to figure out something like playing every other week, so that they can hangout in between without you being in charge

Margaret, you might check with your doctor and be tested for PCOS if you haven't been. I frankly encourage ALL women to get tested, because it has such a massive impact on your life and can be very dangerous if untreated/unknown.
