I completely understand how that second person feels about not wanting to be a controlling DM but also wanting a tory to go a certain way. I've come to terms that I simply am not capable of making a long term campaign at the moment due to these restrictions and more, but I love running one shots and short adventures for my group and they seem to really love them too. Some people are just more suited for different ways of DMing, much like the different styles of playing.
For the called shots. Thus we encounter one of the issues I have with the general understanding of D&D HP. I view the majority of the HP as endurance, or the ability to minimize impact. Not every hit should be drawing lots of blood or wounding, because it makes no sense that a night of sleep fully restores that. If it’s an armored enemy, the shot hits and winds the person, but doesn’t kill them. Or the monsters hide is thick enough that it hurts it, but doesn’t tear it’s leg off. Things like that. The One Ring has a great endurance/wound system, where almost all attacks are simply tiring you down, but crits have a chance to wound. Otherwise, the kind of ambiguous damage in D&D can be confusing for new people.
I'm watching this while working. I'm grooming an aggressive golden retriever. You guys make me not feel like I'm going insane, you're voices are much nicer then an angry dog barking in my face. So thank you for the distraction ❤
I think it is brenden lee mulligans whose take on called shots is that a critical hit represents what a called shot does because even if you want to shoot someone in the face doesnt mean you will be able to and hitting that 20 represents hitting that weak point. It also steps on other class traits like the battle master and weapons like the sword of sharpness which is a very rare weapon. For creature like the hydra it is how much damage you do decides how many heads you cut off because it loses a head for every 25 damage
49:52 as someone who reclassed from rogue with gun to gunslinger, gunslinger is so much more satisfying anyway and you can still have a pretty stealth build.

If they don’t want to take healing spells then 1) they know the risks! And 2) we have healing potions and other healing items for a reason! No need to worry!

I know it's a month too late, but that second one? I feel like OP would have a BLAST playing solo games. Get Ironsworn or Scarlet Heroes or any number of solo rpgs on itchio and have your private game in one of those. You can play any time you feel like it for whatever amount of time you have to play and it's just for you. You don't have to write a book. There's a whole genre of ttrpgs for you. There are dnd 5e solo resources too if you're really married to the idea of playing dnd and nothing else. Mythic GME 2 and Elminsters Guide to Solo Adventuring are my favs for that, but there's a bunch of stuff out there.
If your cleric doesn't want to heal more, don't worry about adding a bunch of brand new homebrew rules, just start with adding more potions, don't even change it so they're a bonus action. If that's not enough, then try homebrew. As for the rogue, dnd combat is never going to be realistic, hands down. It's not fair to other players at the table if they're following the rules but one player is pressuring the dm so they can do anything they want.
Based Cleric. Cleric and Warlock are my faves and when I pick Cleric I never take healing. Multiple reasons. I think it's funny, there's other spells I want. I'm trying to show people that Clerics are so much more than healers. Just throw the players some healing items. Or let them know they should seek out healing items
Haha, Isn’t the world a gym really? Oh so many online games with voice chat sadly can be toxic environments. Yeah I agree, as a DM you can’t think of your game as a perfect story where every goes the way and hit the beats you want, you can have ideas where you would like things to go but sometimes the players can come up with something you didn’t think of which is better and that’s where the fun is for me. Main thing is it’s all about everyone having fun.
If you can get over your dislike of dwarves, Deep Rock Galactic is an excellent multi-player game with a super kind community. It stinks that so many multi-player games get so toxic.
