Interview: Who is Kris Gleave and What is this years challenge?
Over the past couple of months I've researched into a new endurance event taking place in August 2024 in the Lake District. The premise is to summit Helvellyn on a set circular route 9.2 times over 48 hours which will be the equivalent ascent of the height of Everest 8,848m (29,035ft).
I won't be doing this one alone...I've assembled some awesome people as part of my team and looking forward to taking on the challenge....although nervous about it to. My team mates include Andy from @BackpackingUK who I did the OMM with last year, Paul Messner (@PaulMessner) and Al from @BUSHMANandBLUE....what a team!
For us, we are all just looking forward to taking part and pushing ourselves and see ...

  • @peterlewis3540
    @peterlewis3540 День назад

    Its probably the most popular route up the mountain, but its certainly not the easiest. Its all on rock, much of it heavily worn by the now, millions of visitors over the years, and in wet weather, its very slippery. My choice for the easiest way up the mountain, is the Snowdon Ranger, as its all on a very easy to follow gravelly rock. Its pretty exposed to the prevailing weather, but its still the safest way up the mountain.

    Just completed Scafell Pike via the Wasdale route for my first mountain. Looking at doing this route next up Snowdon. Wondering if this would be comparable in terms of difficulty? I'm aware it's a bit longer.

    • @krisgleave
      @krisgleave День назад

      Yeah you’ll be fine with that. Well done on you first hike. Your route up Scafell is quite a quick route so yes the Pyg Track will take you longer. I advise going early to avoid the queues of people at the summit as it does get busy especially this time of year. Pyg Track up and the Miners Down is a good way to go and easy to navigate too. The path down to the miners you’ll fine quite steep but you descend quickly and then a long more or less flat path back. Good luck

    Hi Kris. When you said your bag was about 11KG, Is that with or without water? I’m starting it at the end of the month andtrying to organise my bag. Mine is roughly 13kg with 2 litres of water.

    • @krisgleave
      @krisgleave Месяц назад

      Hi Mark, that will be weight without water I think or maybe 0.6L can’t really remember. I don’t count water weight as don’t really carry it as I have a filter. So I tend to top up and drink when I see a water source. I often just carry 0.6L in a bottle with electrolytes and drink as I go. Your weight sounds fine. Honestly the best thing is don’t worry about weight so much. Have a local walk with all your bag packed and see how it feels. Obviously the less weight the easier it’ll be on you. Definitely take a water filter as always points to top up so you don’t need to carry as much then.

    Hi Kris I've just ordered one and waiting for it to come. I was interested to see how compact you made the fly sheet and inner tent. I have a question about the poles - I'm a cyclist and I wonder about the longest section length (not the pole length but how long is the longest section (they may be all the same) I want to know this in order to think about how I'm going to pack the tent away? Great channel which I've only just come across.

      Awesome you’ll love it. I’ll be getting out in it again soon for sure as the Mrs loves this one with the room and it packs pretty small for the size of the tent. The poles are just standard size if that helps. I’m sure you can strap to the middle of your bike if bike packing. I think they’re all the same roughly in size packing wise.

      Hi Rifi thanks for your comment. I always go a similar route up there and think the two you mentioned are just to the side although sometimes I go straight up the north ridge too. I think the east traverse is to the left but lots of videos online specific to those too.

      I didn’t take any. On this route if I remember rightly I don’t think I even took a stove. I sometimes don’t on my long distance hikes if I know I can pick things up on route. Rather save the weight. Easy to buy at shops and snack as you go. I do always take some chocolate and protein bars and haribo to keep fuelled on the hike.

    That looked really sketchy. I had an experience like that on Striding Edge in March, but the whiteout conditions were so bad at the top, I couldn't confidently find Swirral Edge and went back over Striding Edge so I could follow my own footprints. Gave up on making a video and opted for a short instead! Enjoying your videos, Kris.

      Yeah definitely sketchy looking back but honestly loved it. I remember when I was about to leave the top of helvellyn I thought to myself…what have I done here 😂. Up to that point I was fine I’ve been over striding edge quite a bit in poor conditions and snow solo so fine with it but definitely have to be more careful.

    Amazing video... i had my first ever scramble this weekend and it was the north ridge... The photos i took don't do it justice, this video is fantastic!! Turns out I'm very scared of heights but loved the actual scrambling side of it 😃

      Awesome well done Helen! Now you’ve done it, has that made you want to do more? If you go back there you have Bristly Ridge too just in front as you descend to put you on top of the Glyders and that’s fantastic too but definitely steeper so have to be careful. I have other videos on here of that one with the 360 camera. Well done though especially for your first scramble…it was the same for Ryan on this one

    I swear by the trangia base - pots and kettles sit in it and if you hit it or drop something next to it or bump it - stays stable.

    • @krisgleave
      @krisgleave Месяц назад

      Yeah I never use the Trangia though. I have one but far too heavy for me, plus it’s just bare fluid and if you know it over you’re in trouble. I use the little speedster type stoves, I actually make my own as really easy. They have fireproof material in which soaks up the fluid. So still lights and works the same way but if you tip upside down no fluid will come out as it’s soaked in. Far safer.
