- Tryfan North Ridge Guided Hike.
I was booked to take a friend on a guided hike up the North Ridge of Tryfan. This is an excellent scramble / hike and Ryan had only ever scrambled once over Striding Edge to Tryfan. He was apprehensive at first and unsure if this was something he could achieve but rose to the challenge and smashed it.
This is my 3rd time up the north ridge and it's one of my favourite scrambles - it's got a bit of everything. If you haven't done it before it's certainly one to consider however take precautions as this is not for the faint hearted.
Summits:
⛰️ Tryfan (918m / 3,011ft)
If you're interested in booking me to run a guided hike for yourself, a group or even for your team then do get in touch.

Loved this hike! 🏔️
Aah thank you. It’s my favourite mountain Tryan as it’s something different. It looks great, it’s a challenge, lots of scrambling, epic views, lots of danger and rewarding. Perfect
Cracking Video. That scree slope was the stuff of nightmares when I went up. Should have never attempted it solo for my first time. What a buzz when at the summit mind.
I’ve been up some dodgy places on my own too…it’s what we do hey haha. Awesome achievement though well done. Definitely always make sure you can contact people if solo. I always have a satellite communicator with me when solo.
What an amazing video.. Ryan, absolutely quality effort..
Cheers Michael
Fantastic lads well done ,thought you disappeared kris ,but forgot the bloody bell ,so at least I've got a few to watch now.
Cheers Lee. Did have a 7 week break of uploads which I explain in last nights video but back to the weekly uploads all being well. I appreciate the support
Very good guide , thank you . Lucked in with the weather
Cheers Roger. Always plan for the weather but this one was booked in advance and definitely helps when it’s sunny. Got to be careful up there in wind and obviously any rain makes it far more dangerous.
Well done lads, love heights when it is someone else; just can't deal with them myself! Great video
Haha I know what you mean. I know it’s different for everything I don’t think I liked them 15 years ago but love them now. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for this video! I done this solo by accident yesterday when my Garmin died with almost no scrambling experience and I shat myself. Glad to see I chose 'the right' route tho. It was amazing getting to Adam and Eve but I definitely won't do it solo again. Cheers, great video 👊🏻
Well done though you’ve done well on your own. It’s basically straight up but do have to be careful you don’t stray too far left or right as it really gets steep and higher grade. It’s my favourite scramble but also you have Bristly Ridge to tackle after this if you ever return. Thats awesome too and straight after Tryfan in front of you.
@@krisgleaveThanks man! Can't stop thinking about it tbh 😁 will include Bristly Ridge next time with friends! 👊🏻
@paul_is_feeling_forty You’ll love it and there’s a couple of ways up. Good luck
Excellent, confidence-inducing video.
Aah thanks for that 🤙🏼
I wish I had the nerve to do something like this, but even watching is making my hands sweat 😂 great video though 👌🏼
Haha thank you. It’s not too bad when you’re on it. Ryan doesn’t like heights either but managed it so I’m sure you could work up to it.
Looks unbelievable added to my list
It’s an awesome climb and my favourite mountain.
Amazing video... i had my first ever scramble this weekend and it was the north ridge...
The photos i took don't do it justice, this video is fantastic!!
Turns out I'm very scared of heights but loved the actual scrambling side of it 😃
Awesome well done Helen! Now you’ve done it, has that made you want to do more? If you go back there you have Bristly Ridge too just in front as you descend to put you on top of the Glyders and that’s fantastic too but definitely steeper so have to be careful. I have other videos on here of that one with the 360 camera. Well done though especially for your first scramble…it was the same for Ryan on this one
What a Fucking awesome video 🤙🤙🤙.
That was crazy, 👊🏼👊🏼. Must be harder to video on a scramble like that , when you film yourself then you got to go back for the camera again. Liked and subscribed
Aah thank you and tell me about it haha. You go up and down lots more times setting the camera up but it’s worth it. This is my favourite mountain too its got so much to offer with views, difficulty and terrain it’s ace
Fantastic vid mate! I will be here on Sunday. Looking forward to
It.
Thanks Shaf, how did you find it, did you manage to get to Tryfan?
I'm loving this - subscribed 👍🏻
Thanks so much and glad to have you as part of the channel 🤙🏼
@@krisgleave Hey mate, following you on Strava too under my name - Mark Hulme, keen to catch up on your routes and adventures as an avid hiker myself…. Keep up with the great adventures bro 👍🏻
@scoundrel1975 Aah great stuff. Literally all my hikes are on there so if you scroll through hopefully you’ll find some routes if you fancy tackling them. If you use strava in your browser rather than the app it’ll let you download the GPX file to follow.
@@krisgleave Cheers mate I will do that 👍🏻
Stunning views! What a climb! Tired watching you
Rachel & David
It’s a great mountain have you ever been? There are some good locations just at the foot too for your camper van 🤙🏼
@@krisgleave hi no we haven’t but I think it needs adding to the list! I could sit in the camper and watch David climb 😂😂
@LeisureBit Haha great thinking
Great video of Tryfan, same way I went. That bit you described as lords rake is called the "nor nor gulley" as you said, don't do it if you you're not up to it. Accounts for. A 3rd of all ogwen mountain rescue callouts does tryfan! You can see why if the cloud comes down it's so easy to get off track.
Good to see you back, and look forward to the next 👍 thanks
I’ll remember the name of the gully next time thanks for that, I didn’t realise it had a name. Yeah I can imaging a lot of people over commit and maybe feel the pressure of having to do something they’re not comfortable with. I’ve never done it in poor conditions as try my best to research the weather first but imagine it really makes it tough especially if wet.
Smashed it Ryan!
Well done!
Thank you
Great video, this will be my first climb here, and i want to tackle the north ridge.
It’s really good you’ll love it just be careful. There’s no set path up but watch mine as a guidance and as you ascend you’ll kind of see the way.
You’ll get to a point where you’re not too sure as no exact route. Just try and stay pretty central. As long as you don’t go too far left or too far right you’ll be fine as they turn into Grade 2 scrambles.
@@krisgleave thanks Kris, I’m taking a friend who’s suffered from mental health, and i want him to overcome challenge’s. Your video with your friend was perfect to convince him he needs this 👍
@@clamp65 love it. Good luck and let me know how you get on
Fantastic great views
Thank you. It’s a great mountain, probably my favourite.
Really enjoyed this video pal
Thanks Francis glad you enjoyed it
I’ll be there in September for the Welsh 3000 and to finish my Cambrian Way. Will be watching this with interest.
Aah brilliant that’ll be a great challenge for the Welsh 3000s. Tryfan is an awesome mountain.
@@krisgleave it will certainly be on my RUclips as part of the Cambrian Way and Welsh 3000.
Look forward to seeing it
Good guide to the North Ridge. 9:30 the ET path to the top section of Nor Nor gully is the best bet for most as the north tower is G2 these days as it's so polished and greasy
Thanks for the feedback. Aah I didn’t know the name of the gully thanks for that. I do live a good climb up the north tower too though haha
Good video, love this mountain! The diversion you took around to the left of the Northern Buttress is harder than going up and over imo.
Aah really? I don’t even know the sections up there to be fair. Love Tryfan and exploring there though
No way mate, your getting mixed up, the northen buttress is a grade 3 + on the east face!! with the terrace wall which is a sheer face never go up that way without a guide or if you have rope experience yourself. The lads on this video went up the top half of the nor nor gully which is a lot easier than the north tower ridge which you say is easier no way is it easier your more exposed in the wind the nor gully protects you a lot safer !
Amazing video! Because of the fact that it visually shows the path but I had one question, why does this path not show the north tower or east traverse path? Is this a different route up? Because it looks alot more manageable less high risk (not that I’m saying it easy) 😂
Hi Rifi thanks for your comment. I always go a similar route up there and think the two you mentioned are just to the side although sometimes I go straight up the north ridge too. I think the east traverse is to the left but lots of videos online specific to those too.
Great video! Did Tryfan with some friends back in September, we used the Eastern Traverse like you, as opposed to doing the North Tower. Would you regard doing the North Tower as harder than the Eastern Traverse?
It’s certainly more exposed and more of a scramble on the North Tower. I tend to do a hybrid. I go up most of the tower then pop out higher in the gully to get to the top. But whatever you’re comfortable with
So you didn't go up the north ridge, you went up the east gulley?
I can’t even remember the exact steps on this one as didn’t film all of it and we were up and down a few areas around there as I was showing around the different sections. Ryan isn’t a big fan of drops so we took the best way up for him.
What trainers you wearing mate?
These are hiking boots/trainers and they’re the Adidas Terrex Freehiker GTX Version 1…not the newer 2nd version which are quite different.
@@krisgleave thanks mate 👍🏻
Is it easier to get down ?
You come down the opposite side and you don’t have the exposure on the other side like on the way up however you will need to climb down rocks too. Once you descend those its paths all the way down past the lake at the bottom which will take you back to the road.
I'll wait until the ropes ladders and safety nets are installed.
Haha love it!
Shoulda taken north tower for a real boxer-stainer 😂
Haha I love it and been up there myself. No chance I was taking Ryan up there 😂
@@krisgleave I took my partner up there today for her first scramble (she is a trad climber so thought it would be fine) but she wasn't too happy 😅
@@DrDarashin haha oh dear really? How did she find it? I want to take my gf there one day…she’s not a fan of drops but I’m sure she can do it.
@@krisgleave we made it up without any issues but there were a few swear words involved. She's only 5'3" so the first 2-3 metres were tough and then the exposure higher up got to her a bit, after that though it was plain sailing and big smiles
@@DrDarashin brilliant sounds like you helped her through it. Well done
