I passed on the road below, had to stop and have a look, day trip to Holyhead to drop a trailer in the port, there was driving torrential rain Dec1/24 was speaking to some fellows that had just got down from the north ridge, last time I was up there was in the late 1970s with the school mountaineering club, I went to school in Wales,I would really like to get up there again, great video. Thanks 👍🏼
Best route description of the North Face I've ever watched. I have climbed 5 times . The first on my own, and almost killed myself... venturing too far to the left , insidiously easy to begin with.. and edging across the main eastern gulleys until popping up below Adam and Eve from the south side. Frightened to death! Subsequent trips has always been with others.... more fun and less of a self doubting-what- shall- I -do- now kind of scramble. As you say, it is almost impossible to do the same tactical route twice. And there's the fun! :)
Thanks! Yeah I know what you mean about being frightened to death 😄, some pretty hairy scrambles on the east and west faces. We did the Notch Arete on the West Face a couple of years back, lovely route but pretty scary in parts. So easy to stray off onto those harder routes!
Once again, I would like to say thankyou for the vid.. we have just completed tryfan and it was truly epic. Your vid helped us from the off with everything you explained on your vid. Thanks again... Regards. Rob
Great video,my mate took us novice climbers about 8 of us up this in the fog about 15 years ago, fair to say it was a challenge but we all got there in the end, looks like we done the same root just wish it was a clear day👍
One of the best Tryfan North Face videos I’ve seen, especially in terms of route finding. Plan to do this one in the new year , this is helpful. Have subscribed thanks!
I really enjoyed your video… and found it very informative, more so than the other videos of Tryfan. Taking my 13 year old up there in the summer! Thank you
Climbed to the summit of Tryfan a few months ago via the South Ridge. Turned back twice on the North face, once because of the light and once because of the weather. Its a mountain that requires the upmost respect.
This is a really useful video, thanks! Went up the Heather terrace on Monday, having missed the turning up onto the north ridge. Next time thanks to your video I think we'll find it. 👍
Tryfan is an easy climb, I did it as a kid, but like any mountain if you get lost it can be scary! I did the jump at the top but I’m not sure I would have the nerve to do it now. 👍🏽
Great video, really enjoyed the description. We're heading up there in a couple of weeks if the weather is good, so it's helpful to see a clear picture of what the scramble entails.
iv done this last saturday, super clear weather, built up the courage and went via North Ridge! then down via south Ridge, all i can say is OMG why did i delay it for sooo long!!!!! its mental! i love it, wanna do more scrambling!
Awesome! Glad you loved it 😄👍You'd probably enjoy Bristly Ridge which is just after Tryfan. Also definitely check out Crib Goch on Snowdon. Some awesome scrambles in Wales, and Scotland is even better 😊
attempted this in august 2020 but it was too foggy to see anything and the mountain turned into a waterfall with the rain. It was a very sudden weather change and it caused us to turn back because it was too dangerous. I can see from your video that we were actually very close to the top . I don't regret turning around though as visibility became so poor that one of us could have got hurt. i hope to return on a sunny day in April 2022 to finally get to the top!
Great vid, did this for the first time a couple of days ago and somehow I ended up with the cannon to my left so I don't think i took the traditional north face route, but having watched your vid I think i can see where i took a different turn. Cheers, will do this again soon ( Properly ! )
Cracking video mate, just sub’d your channel as well, done loads of mountains in Wales and Tryfan amongst a load of others are on the to do list, doing this one in a few weeks and your vid gave us a load of tips on where to go so thank you for that 👏 ATB Mark 👍👌
very informative video! when you mentioned Swirl Edge and Striding edge it sent chills down my spine hahahah didnt have a good experience hence why but love do to this some day, on my bucket list
I wish I watched this video last week, we came up via the south side from Pen-y-Pass and the Glyders and descended down the North Face yesterday, was a little hairy to be honest, looks a lot easier (and fun) going up!
I've never come down the North side, but I imagine it must be pretty hairy as you found, I find it's always easier to go up something than go down it, especially in rain 😊
@@ManontheOutside I’ll have to go back and do it the correct way next time although I doubt my missus will want to join me after my poor route plotting the other day! 😅
Thanks! I've done it about a dozen times, usually takes 3-3.5 hours on average. It's quite a quick outing really as there's no long walk in like most other mountains.
An Teallach in Scotland is amazing, probably #1. And Helvellyn (especially in the winter is probably my #2.... a lot easier to get to for me so probably takes the number one spot really :)
Really enjoyed this video - thanks for the great info & amazing footage. I typically stick with snowdon & forever tackling the pyg up & miners down.. 2 questions is tryfan much tougher than going up pyg track? & lastly how long does it take to reach the cannon stone?? Subbed 👍🔔
Thanks 😊Tryfan is much tougher than Pyg Track (I assume you mean the one on Snowdon). Crib Goch on Snowdon would be comparable to Tryfan in difficulty. Usually takes me about an hour to reach the cannon in good weather!
Is the north tower the only way up or can you go to the right up a gully? When there this weekend but started really early got to the tower but didn’t know if that was the correct way or is there any other ways up?
You can go around the North Tower to the left (heading East)....there's a bit of a broken pathway for a while which is called the Eastern Traverse if I remember correctly. Then you'll hit a gully which will force you to head up to the right, then you can break into the back of the North Tower at the top of the gully (there's a big jammed chockstone in the gully so it's easy to recognise). Going this way avoids the majority of the tricky stuff on the North Tower. Don't go right (West) at the North Tower, as this will take you onto Tryfan's West Face, as you'll be getting into much higher grade scrambling then (grade 2/3 and upwards), it is possible to go this way but it can get very tricky. There's a good article which explains it here: www.grough.co.uk/magazine/2018/06/28/thinking-of-heading-up-tryfan-read-this-first
About 8am I think. Head to LL57 3LZ and drive on a bit past Ogwen Cottage and look for the free laybys. It gets pretty full by 9am so I'd arrive a lot earlier!
We're heading up Tryfan this saturday coming, i think Heather Terrace but stumbled by your video as has previously failed to achieve Crib. in your opinion, in order, which do you consider best? Helvellyn via striding edge Ben Crib Great video, thank you
I do love Helvellyn via Striding Edge, especially in the winter. Love Crib but it's way too busy now unless you avoid weekends. Ben (I assume you mean CMD Arete) is great but just a long drive! In order I'd say (in summer): Crib, Striding Edge, CMD. In winter, CMD, Striding Edge, Crib. I would say my favourite scramble is probably Aonach Eagach but it's a big step up from this, but not too difficult on a warm summer day,
They're not actually that far apart - about 3 feet I would say. I've seen people straddle it before. It's the kind of thing that if it was in your back garden, you could jump it over and over. But with the massive drop behind Eve, when you get up there, most people have a change of mind 😄
If you enjoyed this Tryfan North Ridge video and found it useful, I've love if you'd consider buying me a coffee, this helps to keep the channel going and helps me to bring you new videos and adventures! www.buymeacoffee.com/manontheoutside

Made this exact same mistake about a week ago. Luckily a very clear and windless day
I did exactly the same thing . Had to climb back up to find the route down. So, easy to lose the paths on there.
Great video, I am hoping to travel up next week for a few days of hiking and this is one I want to do. Very well explained thank you 😊
It's a scenic route with many obstacles that were bravely overcome in this wonderful video.
This awesome mountain brings back so many memories of some great times, shared with friends.

Glad you got down safely. Yep, it's a tricky mountain in bad weather or low light. On a warm, dry, summer day, an absolute dream of a mountain!
This is a really useful video, thanks! Went up the Heather terrace on Monday, having missed the turning up onto the north ridge. Next time thanks to your video I think we'll find it. 👍
Cool, glad you found it useful. It's a tricky mountain and easy to stray off course. Hop you find it on your second attempt!

Fantastic vid my Scouse mate, From a Manc!! Brilliant, must do it, liked and subscribed, more please!!
