  • In this video, I am up in the mountains of North Wales having just spent the night in my broken tent during a snow storm. I head down to a lower altitude to meet with a friend at Dulyn Bothy - a mountain refuge hut where we spend the night sheltered from the biting cold and snow and enjoy a warm fire, a few drinks and great company.
The Bothy at Dulyn reservoir is one of many owned and maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association. They are free to use and accommodate several people, offering shelter from the weather in remote mountainous regions. They are basic, but usually have bunks of some description, simple furniture, a place to prepare food and some have a fire place to warm up. You can join the Mountain Bothies Association for an annual fee that helps fund the maintenance of these fantastic resources.
I hope you enjoy the video.
    Thanks for watching.

    Hi folks, thanks for watching!
it seems the scammers are back at it again! If you’ve received a reply to your comment ‘apparently’ from me asking you to get in touch, it is NOT me, please ignore and report to RUclips. They are trying to imitate me in order to get information and scam you out of money. I will never do giveaways or anything like that through the comments section.
I hope nobody has been caught out.
    Simon

I got one too, I have been reporting them every time to RUclips, which apparently has done no good so far, so this time I simply gave it my best middle finger emoji and a thumbs down. Once in a while it's no longer reasonable to just accept it by ignoring, because that feels like pretending and condoning, and I don't condone them dropping this rubbish all over my favoured RUclipsrs' content. They are maggots and we don't need them. It's that or give up on RUclips.

I dont know if it's possible with the matress inflater you have but I found that on larger air pumps if you pull it out slightly to start inflating a matress the pump blows in air and the movement of the air going in also sucks air in with it. I used to have an air matress for visitors and if I held the pump about 1/2 an inch from the air valve it would inflate a lot quicker and then when it is mostly inflated push it in to get it up to pressure.

A bothy is a monument to humanity at its finest.
It is literally a shack in the middle of nowhere, which is maintained solely for the purpose of helping out random strangers who you will most likely never meet.

My dad's second favourite bothy after Cae Amos. When he passed away in 2021, part of his legacy was to make Dulyn watertight by replacing the leaky single-pane windows… I helped fit the newest windows in September just gone. Glad to see they have stood up to a Welsh winter!

Simon, you brought both a smile & a tear to me, a very old woman in a very bad nursing home in 🇨🇦. My dear husband died a cruel death here recently from Parkinson's & dementia. Before he died he said ''This place has broken my spirit". I will take to my grave my guilt that I didn't find a way or the money to move him to a better place. I watch RUclips to escape the unending sadness & dysfunction here & for some reason your video popped up in my feed. I'm leaving a comment because I noticed your address is Diss. My paternal grandparents were from there & emigrated to Canada (Toronto via Montreal where their boat docked) in the late 1800s. I have my father's Diss birth certificate, exquisite penmanship on a beautiful, lage document, pale green, dated 1900 [for reasons unknown, my grandmother returned to Diss alone, gave birth to my father, then sailed back here]. They owned a small farm in Diss and were staunch members of the Salvation Army. They had a very eccentric, reclusive relative, a man who lived alone there in an ancient house stuffed full of antique furniture. Names: Arthur Orford Flatman & Alice Philpot; children: Ivan, Madge, Earnest, Lily, & twins who died in infancy; the relative if I recall correctly was Thomas Flatman. Thanks for the video which for a while reminded me how precious fresh air, silence, & privacy are. I wish you well. 🙋

Stayin with a Canuck. My Mother was Canadian, my American Dad captured her while stationed in Canada and brought her here to Pennsylvania USA in 1962. She loved the outdoors and felt that Pennsylvania was closest to looking like Saulte Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada except she said our water was dirty. My mother loved the outdoors and the Queen of England. She never gave up her Canadian citizenship, she passed away in 2015 with it still intact. I wish we had these kind of remote places that were equipped like this place you went to, I am not sure, but I don't think we have that. Everything has to be Corporatized here in the United States of Corporations. Thank you, for making the video I enjoyed it very much. You ROCK. Linda in USA

As a volunteer with the Mountain Bothies Association can I plead with people not to leave food of any description or equipment for the next person; fuel and candles fine but nothing else please; it just encourages people with less sense to leave stuff for mice to eat and breed; everyone getting as far as a bothy has sufficient to survive; ultimately its all rubbish which we volunteers have to deal with; clearing chewed up roll mats, mouldy sleeping bags, bottles left as candle holders, food, etc; lugging out other people's "useful life-saving donations" means we miss out on hill time or have to skip maintenance tasks....

So fuel ie kindling anything to get a fire started . We don’t need food at all or drinks left , you we should be prepared for most eventualities otherwise you shouldn’t really be out there.
It really angers me when I have to clear other peoples crap up before I leave .

Very nice wrap up of this three day blizzard adventure.
These conditions are actually more dangerous than one might think. Wet snow and high winds will get you cold and wet very fast, much more than in conditions below zero. Also when the visibility gets low it's really easy to get disoriented and the wind and snow than pounds the face is very distracting. Good to use the compass and map and to take out directions. Difficult skill to master in those conditions with low visibility where it's hard to recognize landmarks to adjust bearing to. A compass & map basics would be a good upcoming video for you to make.

Completely medicinal watching as ever. I've spent decades frequenting bothies, and have stayed in Dulyn a few years back. Back then, there were no bunks. I always take coal with me - as calorific output for weight, it can't be beaten. A bothy is never full - folk will generally make space - especially in those conditions. Those Dowling stoves are great - if a little problematic to control if there is no flu baffle. Another cracking video Simon. Keep them coming. (18:25 - colloquially known as "bothy bollocks")

I visited Snowdonia way back when I was 19 with my best friend. We hiked a bit in the mountains and to 19 year old me it felt like I was walking on another planet. Interesting place. Cheers from North Carolina.

Nice video Simon. I stayed in that bothy a few years ago in similar weather to what you had. Didn't get much sleep as I'd forgotten my ear plugs and one of the other residents snored loudly all night. Lesson learned!

Wow! I’ve only ever seen a bothy (so?) once before, it sure does remind you how the small creature comforts of life that we take for granted gave the most pleasure to people who lived in them back in the day. I’ve never seen your blue eyes glow so brightly Simon, so good to see you enjoying the pleasure of great company too!!! Thank you so much for taking us along on another amazing journey!

Nicely done Simon. I’ve never camped in the UK, but grew up in NE USA and hiked/camped in similar conditions. Your cinematography is outstanding. Taking the time to shoot the B roll and your editing. Thanks for sharing a walk.

We biked here from Liverpool a few years ago.
Arrived in the dark, ditched our bikes on the mountain and walked around for an hour before finding the bothy.
In the morning we looked out the window and the bikes were about 100m away.

I've not done camping, hiking and navigating in adverse conditions for about 15 years. I learnt in the army and loved to escape to the hills whenever I could, escape the endless responsibility of an adult life.
I really enjoyed watching the video, it reminded me of good times in my past. I live in a year round warm climate now, the last claim of snow here was in the early 1950s and it was almost certainly hale, so the only snow I expect to ever see again is on my computer screen.
One other thing, I struggle to think of things from the UK I miss, and damn if you didn't show me something I'd forgotten about: Soreen Malt Loaf. I've got a craving for the stuff now, and there's not a hope in hell's chance of getting one! 😄 🤔 😒 😩

Great video! I'm wrapped up in bed, our wood stove dying down and having a hot drink with a dram (Glenmore ), it's clear with snow outside, -8 C at 1250 metres. I miss the Soreen malt loaf.

Absolutely beautiful. Mountain huts like that are just the most wonderful thing on a snowy, frigid night...not quite warm, not quite home, but a refuge from whats outside.
All the best from another Ethan...just not from Canada.
