Brushless Clod: I have some bugs to work out.....
Well, I have a few things to figure out with this thing...
Are the ESC's & Motors drawing too much current causing the servo to flat line momentarily? Is the servo too old (it is an old one I used for many years, maybe a 2000 servo)??
I am using a Non Futaba receiver (RX), I do have a Futaba RX and my system is dual esc ready.....
I might have to go with SOA (servo on axle) and a rear steer lock out kit... UK Monsters will be my choice if I go that route. I might need a "cap pack", I don't really know... This is my first time trying a Brushless Clod build so I don't really know what to expect... Yes, I did pull a power wire from one of the ESC's to the RX (after my first run and it did the...

@@UncleBobsRC exactly!
Crikey mate..... The clods busted!!!! That's a new one to me Bob,guessing it's guna require a thorough process of elimination test of all the electronics? Is this the same one that went swimming?!! 👍 👍 👍
Yes, same one that went swimming but new electrics, RX, ESC's & motors... I did bump up the BEC voltage in the ESC's from 5.5 volts to 8.5 volts.. Tested again today out front and seems to be better... Its still the stock steering & a 20 + year old servo.. Again today, on 2S, speed was over 20 mph... The only thing added to this kit is bearings (must have, even if running kit motors), Steel pinions (again, a must have even if running stock) of the the stock size, so no gear ratio change, stock body, stock suspension & the Castle Creations Copperhead 10 "Basher Edition" with 4600kv motors... I wonder how it will be on 3S??????
@@UncleBobsRC I've said it before, and I'll say it again - You're the king of clods Bob!! 20mph is mad in one of these lumps, think mine is half that speed! 3s could be interesting?!!! Glad you have managed to get it sorted anyway mate.. Thinking perhaps an uncle bobs clod speed run challenge next year?...... 😁 👍 👍 👍
@@yodadarksideGreenHawksRC Well thanks man.... It hit me the other day that, I can go into the ESC's (on some) and change the BEC voltage, so I did (Castle Link needed for that). These esc's also have data logging, so I can see esc temps, motor rpm, battery ripple and so on... One of these I had in my Losi No Prep Drag Car, if you ever seen that run... The Castle Copperhead 10 ESC is the bottom of the high end units but on the top of the low end units, think middle of the road esc. Combos, with 5700kv motor and lower can run 3S, above 5700kv YOU MUST only use 2S... Some people don't read that and run 6900kv or 7700kv on 3S and then bitch when their stuff burned out... Then they say Castle stuff if junk.... I never had an issue (but I know how to read).... The hard part is, a Copperhead 10 combo isn't cheap at @ $175.00+ each (this is the lowest I seen) then you still have to get the Castle Link somehow (they come with a code for a free one but I don't know if that the States only).
I just had similar issues with my fms jimny and it was a bad potentiometer in my controller. I replaced it and the receiver with a known good one and had no issues
Steering servo horn is stripped. Super cheap and easy fix! Stock steering horn is too small anyway.
Or the receiver dumped...
Well, I'm not using the stock horn, Hitec Servo's (at least the ones I used 20 years ago, like this one) come with thick & longer horn(s), that's what I use..
@@Poopdogsays Keep in mind, I'm using a single 2S lipo pack, powering two, Castle Copperhead ESC's feeding two, 4 pole, 4600kv Castle Creations brushless motors... Yeah, the RX is a china made unit that can be paired with my Futaba 4PV radio, I use a lot of these and never an issue but this could be a first.. I did bump the BEC voltage in the ESC's from 5.5 volts to 8.5 volts, lets see if that helps...
When you reversed, Bob - "Oh that was not good"!!!! 😅😅 But that think has some power! Time to get those 2 ESC's working in unison, mate! I'm sure you will work it all out, I wanna see that sucker FLY!!! 😎👊🦫👍
They are set up the same, with a Castle system, you can set an esc, save the file, then copy that file to another esc, which is what I did.... However, Also with Castle Link, and an esc that supports it, I just went in and changed the BEC voltage from 5.5 volts to 7.5 volts... Also see my reply I left on Peter's comment & others... These are 4 pole, 4600kv motors. I know this truck has at least 22 mph in it... LOL
Oh, wow, that's a powerful machine! Are all steering links connected? I had on a Slash just the other day, I broke the steering knuckle, but it could still drive, but the wheel would steer weirdly by itself, a bit similar to this... Anyway, I'm sure you'll get it sorted, get this mean machine in shape, dude!
Hey Mads... I think the issue is, one lipo pack powering 2 ESC's that feed a pair of 4 pole, 4600kv brushless motors might be dropping the voltage too low to power the digital servo. I will try a Cap Pack and see if that helps... Also, this servo is @ 20 years old and well used..
Definitely might be that servo; you said it was an older unit? I hope your’e able to sort it out easily Bob!👍😊
Yeah man, the servo is @ 20+ years old and its very used, used it in 2 other race Clods from back in the day, its taken a few hits but still seemed to work fine.. I think the issue might be, one 2S lipo pack powering 2 ESC's that feed a pair of 4 pole, 4600kv brushless motors might be dropping the voltage too low to power the digital servo.
Jaix thats inconvenient. My crawler does drive away for some time now. I use a broken receiver antenna wise. It hase a very limited range. After a few meters it drives on its own. But this thing has no failsafe. I thinks its only the esc settings.
Yes sir, a broken antenna will cause that but this is mostly all new stuff.... One lipo pack powering 2 ESC's that feed a pair of 4 pole, 4600kv brushless motors might be dropping the voltage too low to power the digital servo...
@@UncleBobsRC yea that could be from the look of it. All together can draw some amps.
@@Nordlicht05 That's what I'm thinking anyway.... I could be wrong... LOL
Looks really cool, I hope you will get it sorted 👍
Thanks, I'll figure it out or crash it big time trying!!! LOL
Hey Bob, I hope that you’re keeping well. That’s very odd that the steering is doing its own thing! It’s almost as if the steering servo’s are getting some signals down the signal wire as interference ? Is the ESC inducing any interference through the receiver? Best wishes to you and the family 😊😊
That's the funny thing, That RX is out of my TT02-SR and never had an issue with it.... The servo is @ 20 years old and was used in a 2 of my old race Clods, so it's taken some hard knocks.. However, I think it's a power draw causing the issue, I will try a Cap Pack and see if that helps. ATB back at ya John, and the family.
Hmmm, I suspect the receiver. And if it isn't, there might be something going on in the ESC. Hope you'll find it soon Bob.
2 ESC's brother.... that might be the issue.
One lipo pack powering 2 ESC's that feed a pair of 4 pole, 4600kv brushless motors might be dropping the voltage too low to power the digital servo.
You’ve got interference somewhere.
Maybe but I doubt it.... It's more like the servo loses power.... See my reply to both Addams & Peter Smiths comments.. I seen this before with high powered brushed systems years ago (25-30) when not using high end esc with a low turn motor and a shitty battery pack, LOL... The reason some racers used a 5cell battery along with the esc, just to power the servo..
Surface Vehicles: With their high torque requirements - going from 0 to 100% throttle isn't easy on controllers or batteries - RC cars and trucks put enormous loads on brushless power systems. Use Castle Creations CC CapPacks in high performance applications (IE drag racing and high speed runs) to help your system power through the abuse.
Uh-Oh, that doesn't add up. It has to be some sort of earthing problem between the receiver and the ESC. Have you tried swapping the front motor wires to the rear and vice versa to see if that helps? It could be a break in the wiring between each of the electrical components. Sorry Bob, I'm about as much use as a chocolate teapot 😝😄🤪
Well, I'm not sure, just about everything is kind of new.... swapping a wire will make the motor(s) rotate the other way... But no, I have not tried moving the front esc motor wires to the rear esc and vice versa, as they are programmed and set up right... The servo I'm using is @ 20 years old, it might be on its way out... I am using one battery pack to power both ESC's but only one esc is sending power to the RX (I tried it both ways). These are only 4600kv motors and the esc's are Castle Creations Copperhead's. The ESC's have 3 caps (capacitors) built in each and I'm using a single cap in the RX (I might pull that out and give it a go). This is all new to me, learn as I go...

Use Castle Creations CC CapPacks in high performance applications (IE drag racing and high speed runs) to help your system power through the abuse.
Interesting.... I know you did but the first thing I thought of is if you are using two ESCs that one of the power wires was pulled from it to avoid overvolting the receiver. I honestly seems more like a brown out type of thing where the receiver is not able to keep up with having the dual servos but the throttle seems to work fine... I am not sure dude, you have gremlins of the worst kind. Clicks pops and grinding are much easier to pinpoint and diagnose. Electrical gremlins are a nightmare for sure! Best of luck with it!
Well, I'm only using one servo, an old Hitec from about the 2000's.... Each esc has 3 built in capacitors plus I have a single one plugged into the RX... I tried it both ways, both esc's sending power to the RX and then to only one esc sending power the the RX... I might try a Castle Creations "Cap Pack" but I have no experience using one... It's a learning curve that's for sure...

@@UncleBobsRC that will be interesting for sure
This is interesting mate. We are going to be running a holiday buggy in the brushed category for Peters speed challenge. The first of the three motors we plan to run will be a superstock RZ with a 70c 2s. I have a rough idea of what to expect now fella! Those lights on the roof have me worried..... They look very vulnerable, especially with mine and Taylors driving! 😂 👍 👍 👍
LOL, take them off if need be.... I'll be adding the bearings (video of that in the works) soon.. I'm not sure if I want to add bearings to the BZ now or wait... If I do it now, I won't know IF they make a difference or not.. I can tell you, the 23 turn BZ motor is slower than my Trinity 27 turn stock motor (I linked that video). I plan on ending this series with the 380 back in the buggy..

Over the years, magnets get weak, these motors use old tech magnets (4.0 wet magnets) unlike motors that use 5.0 wet magnets that are stronger from 20 to 25 years ago and newer. with all that said, no brush motor has the rpm of a good brushless motor, most Castle Creations brushless motors max out at 100,000 rpm but will never see that, like the one I have in my DT-02 now....
Awesome and ver useful informations. Thanks for showing Bob.
Thanks Dirk.... Lots more to this coming later....
Hiya Bob! Great stuff dude, you got there in the end. Very well explained and some good advice thrown in along the way. That motor sure spins well after the truing, I could do with one like that for my speed car! All the best Brother! 😎👊👍
Thanks Mark. In part 2 you'll see the ad for these motors and what they claim the rpm is/was (you never get what they claim anyway).. I'm getting closer but still so far off. Over the years, the magnets lose magnetism (gauss), springs on the brushes make the brushes sink into the comm ever so slightly and springs get weak... All that ads up to a slower motor (this one is over 30 years old). Even if you buy a new vintage motor still in its packaging, it will not have the performance it would have had when bought new within a few years of when it was on market. A magnet zapper would really help with this but I don't have one...
Good stuff! Sorry the motor lathe wanted to fight you the whole way LOL! 30k is a great starting point for a speed run motor!!
thanks Addam, In part 2 of this, the advertisement for the Triad Motors show an rpm of 50,000 (you never get what they show) for this 9 turn motor, I'm getting closer to that but old magnets are not helping. I wish I had a magnet zapper...
✌🏽👌🏽
Thanks man!!!!
Wonderful shoutout
Great shout Bob! Craig and Mini are awesome..... I'm looking forward to the day when Mini starts taking some cars around the orchard raceway and beating her dad! 😂 👍 👍 👍
I had a slight problem, I know its hard to understand you Britts from time to time, but stumbling on a Britts written word has to be a new one... LMAO. With all honesty, I wasn't really ready to make that video.. I had forgot Craid sent those to me till I went looking for a snack and seen it in the fridge (I thought he sent chocolate) and it's been in there for weeks... Oops.....
