Back Feeding volts to your RX... Is this a real thing???

  • This is something I learned about this some 35 years ago... But is it true??
Old guys (back in the mid 80's) would talk about this, most were old fliers that moved to the ground.. Wise old guys would say "Don't work your servo's by hand, you could fry your RX". Are they right, do they know more than us younger kids (20's), What do they know???? Lets find out....
And as I work on my TT-02 Type SR, and with new tech with RX's (receivers), I think I found out a bit more about this "Myth".. It's one of those things you hear about but think, Nah, it will be fine...
As a rule, I try not to work a servo by hand unless its not plugged into an RX, other times I forget and do it... Sometimes I see people work the tires back & forth like it's their job...
Bottom line..... It does feed some voltage back to the RX, but is it enough to harm it??? Maybe a test for the more electronically smart person to test...
    Thanks For Watching

Hey Bob, never thought of that but yeah, a motor is a generator, too! I reckon the modern electronics are OK with a little back current. anyways, so sorry about the loss of Booth, he was much loved I know. Take care mate. 😎😎👍👍

For sure man... This was going back some 35 years ago with the old plane guys talking about it using those old radios with crystals... When I seen the LED light up in my RX when I turned the wheels, It reminded of it, so I did a video... Can it hurt anything... That all depends on the circuitry in the servo and receiver... Some diodes only flow current one way, think of it like, plugging your battery into your esc but reverse polarity.. However, how much voltage/amps can a servo back feed to the RX???

So true Bob. I'm one of these old men. Yes you might ruin the servo gears. Especial back in those days with 5kg plastic gears. Now the servos can resist more force, but the input from your hands might still be to strong.
And yes powers generated back into the teceiver, but it shouldn't be more voltage than the receiver can take.
Sorry for your loss. Pets are family.

I first learned of this with 3D printers that use stepper motors for each axis. With the power off and unplugged you can still work the steppers by hand moving an axis around and it will power up the blue screen of the 3D printer.

I think it could fry weak Bec's too. Had a Tble 02 BEC die after a crash that turned the front wheel real fast. Esc still works with an external BEC though.

Yeah, back in the old days, it was a bad thing to do.... However, every electric motor, even in a servo, can generate current (that's way the LED lit up).. If you have 2 brushless motors sitting around, connect the wires, and give one motor a spin on the shaft, the other motor should spin also.. As for a TBLE-02, I got one that didn't work from day one (Daughter's BF's esc out of a TT-02 kit)...So, I cut the on/off switch off and put the switch on a HW1060 so I could mount the switch in the stock location on my Wild One. Thanks for the View & Comment!!!!

Obviously it is a real thing mate....
Thanks for sharing mate, thinking about it though it certainly makes sense.
Oh I remember that car well, the parachute TTO2.... one of the best crashes on the speed run challenge last year! 😂
So sorry for your loss of Booth mate, my sincere thoughts are with you.
It cuts like a knife, and it's still very early days.... but in time we learn to accept the void, and focus on all the years of happy memories that were made.
    They always stay with us.
Keep ya chin up fella. 👍 👍 👍

Thanks James (Guy's).... Cancer Sucks, even for pets!!!! Vet only told us back in Nov or Dec, next thing I knew, he wasn't barking, lost about 20 pounds or more, then the day came when he could hardly walk but that thick headed SOB did not want any help getting up or down the steps.... Till that last car ride... He took his last breath on my Son's 36th birthday, Jan 22nd... I do miss him and we are looking for another English Lab... Some around here are 3 grand, for a puppy (smoking crack if you ask me) that you can't bread, I don't need a show dog.... Just a buddy to stay at home with. A $300 dollar puppy lives just as long as a $3,000 dollar one...

      So sorry mate.
I can feel ya pain, and can totally relate as I have been there myself on more than one occasion.
Much as I hate to admit it, but loosing 'special' pets cuts me up more than family members.
Pets are so innocent, and can't comprehend what is going on, makes you feel so helpless towards them. There's only a certain amount that the vets can do, and quite often in those cases it's only prolonging the agony for both us, and the animal.
At least he is no longer suffering, and I'm sure as hell he had a great life with you.
I know it wont make you feel any better at all at this moment, but time really is a great healer.
I'm certain something will come along, things have a way of fitting into place if it's meant to be.... I've always found animals tend to find us, rather than the other way around.
You can never replace them, but having a new soul to focus on will always help take your mind off the darkness to a certain extent, which in turn helps the acceptance of your loss.
Focus on the happy memories mate.
My thoughts are with you fella.

@@yodadarksideGreenHawksRC Thanks man and I agree, Lost my mom (mum) in 2018... Lost Nella, Our Yellow Lab (a good story behind how/why we got her) 2 years ago in March... That loss was way much harder than losing mom.
Nella came to me in a dream about 2 weeks before our anniversary.... So, I handed Jen a map and said "get us here", she asked why... I said just do it, you wont be disappointed. So about an hour or 2 later and out in the sticks... We rolled into this farm house.. She asked again, why are we here? So, we go in and there was about 11 Yellow Lab puppies... But only one went to her and fell asleep on her lap... So I bought her the pup.. On the way home, Jen says she's got a name for the puppy, I said no, she already has a name and it's Nella, short for vanilla but with an E not an I... Then Jen asked, How do you know her name, I said cause I named her, I had a dream of her and in the dream, her name was Nella... It just played out that a female pup went to Jen.. Call it what you will but to me, it was what it was.. We had 12 years with Nella too..

Amazing story about Nella man, how cool!
I have similar dreams, dreams that I look at as some kind of spiritual guide that I actually base major life decisions on..... It's almost like some kind of psychic link that filters into my sub conscious whilst I'm sleeping.
I also have a lot of lucid dreams where I am fully aware of what is going on, and can even control where the dream goes.... despite my body being totally asleep!
I also have many dreams that actually show me what is coming in life, warnings as it were.... the detail and accuracy is unbelievable.
I write them all down in a dream book and keep a record of every one.
I've also had much loved pets I've lost come to me in the dreams, and it provides great comfort after they have passed.
Hopefully Booth and Nella will come to you to.
People that haven't experienced anything like this think your nuts.... they can't relate at all.
Sometimes I wonder whether the 30+ years of heavy weed/mdma/acid/amphetamine/coke use have opened up some kind of different neurological pathways in my brain?!!
Who knows, all I know is that when important dreams happen, they happen for a reason, and I have to break them down and interpret what they are trying to tell me!
Take care dude, and soldier on.
      👍 👍 👍

Hey Bob, hmmmm🤔🧐interesting 🤔 back EMF 🧐🤔 interesting that the small servo motor is able to send a voltage back towards the receiver. Love the dedication to Booth ( we’re all thinking of him). You’ve got me curious…is that something that happens to all combinations of receivers & servos? 🧐🤔🧐 if I get some time, I might hook up a DVM to measure if EMF is sent back up and / or if there is a small current being forced back. I would have thought that modern receivers would have protection against that ? Interesting 🤨🤔🧐best wishes to you all 😊😊

Hi John, Thank You... It's still rough going for us but getting through it... The reason why I did this video is because I seen the LED light up when I grabbed the chassis and the wheels turned... Old timer plane guys would talk about that back in the day when radios still had crystals in them... Read the comment I replied to Mark... I said something to him about some circuits only flowing one way...
