      I filmed this last summer when I did a revisit to the old cabin. Once I got back home I did some reserch and found the trapper that held the permit had died. He had stopped trapping years ago. The old cabin will most likely fall in dissrepair, collaps under the snow load one winter and the old canoe will then be lost to time unfortunately! Thanks Paul✌️

    I have used and restored wood canvas canoes for a long time, mostly Chestnut Canoe Company canoes. That canoe looks like an old Chestnut Ogilvy with the close ribs, even the decks look like old Chestnut decks from the 20’s/30’s and those round headed slotted gunnel screws look like what Chestnut used before the “Robertson” square drives came into existence around the early 20’s. But, I could be all wrong too, I’m no expert. I don’t even think Chestnut made a 14’ Ogilvy, 16’ was the smallest. Anyway, that’s a nice restoration candidate if the fiberglass comes off without too much difficulty/damage to the planking. The nice thing about wood canvas canoes is you get to enjoy them during the warmer seasons and then perform maintenance during the off season, which can be very rewarding. I enjoy older gear so any time you can share your knowledge about use and maintenance I’ll be there. Thanks P.S.- Keewaydin Canoe Camp in Temagami still uses paddles to portage their wood canvas canoes.

    • @OpenAirOutdoors
      @OpenAirOutdoors 2 часа назад

      Nice to know these old school methods are still being used by somebody! I looked the canoe closely for any tags or badges and there were none unfortunatly. Judging by the content in that old cabin that pointed at its use going back to possbly the 50's one can asume the old canoe is from the same era. Thanks for your insight Robin, you have a wealth of knowledge! See you again✌️

    Wow my friend, that canoe must have some great stories from one or more beaver hunters. It was part of the life of someone who also lived in that cabin. Just as some people collect old cars, someone might also like that canoe and repair it for the pleasure of having it. I found the explanations you give about the use of oars and the way they rowed interesting. The best for you my great friend.

    Nice to see this old beauty. I can sure appreciate its history and purposeful care and maintenance given its condition having had 2 cedarstrippers. My first canoe was a similar but newer 14 foot Huron model I got for 125 dollars in 1970. Same year I found an abandoned trappers canoe not far from the family cottage. It was in rough shape but my brother and I dragged out of the bush. My father replaced the gunwales, thwarts and seats, added a keel and fiberglassed it. Its a Tremblay and still in the family after selling the camp 3 years ago.

    Hello Marc, how much heat escapes if you were sitting by the fire 🔥. I can see if you put a pot on top of the logs where the fire is that it’d boil quickly. I haven’t seen the long logs being burnt this way when I go camping.

    • @OpenAirOutdoors
      @OpenAirOutdoors 6 дней назад

      The idea behind it is the fire/heat extends the length of your body while sleeping. Also stacking logs this way will have them burn less intense but for longer duration. Take care Paul, see you next time✌
