Camping In Insane Black Fly Country, Moose Steaks on the camp fire, Pike fishin' the Boreal Forest

- Welcome to the Boréal Forest, where the black flies are totally insane! From a forestry road I portage my canoe and all the gear needed for a 3 days back country adventure in the wilds of Ontario. The black flies have hatched and they are hungry for blood. Undeterred I press on to my destination fishing for pike along the way. Once on my camp site, A site I have be working on for years now I assess the winter's damage.
CAUTION! Do not watch this video on an empty stomach as I am cooking up a storm of suppers and breakfast that can fill any tank! Moose grilled over a camp fire 2 different methods, testing some new to me craft beers. Breakfast is also done over a camp fire and today I serve up an old favourite of mine never shown before on the channel. Buckwheat pancakes!
Join me as I utilize both heavy winds and camp fire smoke to combat the blood thirsty black flies on the island camp site of Secret Lake.
Buckwheat Pancakes recipe
-1 cup buckwheat floor
-1 cup milk
-2 eggs
-1/2 tsp salt
-1/2 tsp backing soda

Crazy amount of flies! That's a great spot to catch a little wind at least. Drone footage was a nice addition. Buckwheat pancakes 👍🏻
Yes the camp site is on the very top of the island and with the cutting back of brush and dead fall over the years the wind can blow through the site. I'm still learning the drone so expect more of that👍

Hey Marc. Id say that's the worse case of bugs I've ever seen. That was quite the trip, you didn't disappoint. You are the king of outdoors.

A nice outing for sure despite the black flies Marc. Knowing what to expect and being prepared is half the battle. I sure dont miss those conditions where you cant escape them so being on the water is the best refuge. Hope things are getting better healthwise and being outdoors improves things.
As a kid we always stopped in Sudbury going camping on Lac aux Sables so seeing the slag cars dump their firey loads was a highlight. Dad grew up in Sudbury in the 30s and 40s and shared lots of memories of those times. I can still tell them he repeated them so often. His Dad operated an IGA store on Elm Street for years before starting Ritchie Falls Lodge during WW2.
So now, thanks to you its time for pancakes:) Salut!
Thats awesome stuff! And in those days Sudbury was a black rock!! Your father and grand father wouldn't recognize the place now!! Born and raised in the north we are always ready for flies season and most couldn't handle it!😆

Sudbury has indeed been transformed from those days of barren and blackened rock. It has been heartening seeing the vegetation restoration success over the years and fortunately my Dad was able to see the changes before passing at the age of 92 in 2019. Be safe out there Marc:)

Black flies at my camp this year were few but if I went into the bush , oh ya big time . In the 70's I'd go to sudbury and everything was black , no green anywhere. They found a green plant that could live in the ground and now Sudbury is green again :)
The re greening program of Sudbury has been a great success but it all started with the reduction of mining pollution! The flies were especially bad this year but now with a heat wave it s okish.

The flies LOVE you Marc!! The wind-fallen tree could not have been more perfect. Have you ever looked up the Jack Links "Messin' With Sasquatch" videos? They are too funny. Check them out. Bummer about the nasal infection. That must be uncomfortable (but probably not as uncomfortable as sharing a tent with Doug after he eats baked beans). We Love pancakes! Yours looked delicious too. We've been lucky with the blackflies this year, so we're wondering what mosquito season will be like now here in NS. Spent yourself some pretty marvelous days out there...that's the way to live. Hope the nasal infection has cleared up as I know that they can be brutal. Take good care and enjoy the new week ahead.
We have had a heat wave so the black flies has been mostly killed off but as soon as night falls the mosquitoes come out in full force! I'm healthy again so back to business 😆

Great video and awesome food! I was going to head out this last weekend but they called for 50mm of rain on Saturday and 50 again today. Oh well, just have to make it a different weekend. I went out this weekend knowing it was going to rain. I was out from Friday morning and the rain didn't start until Sunday 3AM. Got lucky!
