Model Train Fun
Добавлен 1 ноя 2011
Fun with model trains.
Model trains is a diverse hobby where you can enjoy hours of fun watching model trains run around the track. I will be running modern Märklin H0 gauge model trains from the simple beginnings to more advanced setup's / layouts. The idea is to help you get started in the hobby and to show more advanced model train concepts. I am no beginner, but still have much to learn, so I hope this can become a channel where we learn and help each other :-)
I am doing this for fun out of my hotel room and expect to cover topics like:
- Having fun running trains
- Getting started
- Mobile Station 2 & Central Station 3
- Hope to build a skeleton layout
Tips & Tricks, comments, ideas, suggestions - let me know :-)

CS3 Layout Automation: Experimenting with Stations (Automation Episode 7)
Hello Bo, as one of my favourite you tube sites, I am missing your input. I hope you are going to continue, and are well and in good spirits. If you think you’ve covered everything, please don’t. I am sure you have been working on different projects or trying more things. How to see some more videos soon, from a very grateful viewer, best regards………..TonyH
Hello Bo, Super and clear description of an example of a shelter station. I would also have liked to see, what steps you have to do in the CS3. Do you have a copy of the events available? So that I have an example to be able to control and secure a shelter station with four tracks. Mvg Johan
Hello In your presentation you place a simple switch and I would like to know if possible if you put red caps on the switch or you may have cut the bridge under the track to separate the two rails. Thank you for your answer. Best regards
Hi Daniel, A simple switch is placed in this video. Are you talking about the other video with contact track? In this case - no should not alter the turnout/switch. You only need to make contact track of the tracks between the turnouts/switches. Did this help? Enjoy ;-) Bo
Thanks alot for the videos about the Märklin MS2 ! They are very intresting, you explain very well ! I found the answer for my technical problem ( =an MFX loc who would not connect himself any longer to the MS2) in your answer to the question of @verynormalreviews8692. Your information about how to reset an MFX loc was the perfect solution to my problem. I am very gratefull ! I subscribed to your channel ! Greatings, take care, Roger, Antwerpen ;-)
Could you put here also the layout of the circuit you show on the video?
Bo. Thank you for these videos, they're very helpful. I have a problem that I'm stuck up. I've created and added four contact tracks and three work perfectly, I cannot get the fourth to recognize when there is a train on it. I've double and tripled checked that I've connected it correctly, but it down's work. I've touched to spade connector to the spade connector on the powered ground wire and the connection shows up on my CS3+. But nothing happens when a train goes over it. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.
Hi David, I would guess you have connected the brown wire to the wrong end of the contact track. See here for the most common issues I encounter with contact track: ruclips.net/video/2FMWxEPm__Y/видео.html. Alternatively, there could be a poor connection between the 3 rails that work and the fourth - or you mistakenly put a red insulator the wrong place or side. Enjoy ;-) Bo
@@ModelTrainFun Bo Many thanks. Turns out that I did not completely disconnect the detection rail. Used a multimeter do sicker. All good now.
Bonjour si j'ai un aiguillage sur une zone de contact celui ci ne fonctionne pas c'est normal ?
Hi Nicolas, the turnouts/switches should not be made into contact tracks. Insulate on all sides of the turnout/switch and make contact track of the track between the turnouts/switches. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Good evening After cutting the bridge under track C to have a contact rail and a power supply rail, how to do it with the switches, should we isolate them with red caps or should we also cut the bridge. Which video to watch? Thank you for your answer. Best regards
Hi Daniel, you should not modify the turnouts. only make contact tracks between the turnouts. You should only modify straights and curves. Enjoy ;-)
This is perhaps the most helpful marklin video on RUclips! Your videos have helped me immensely!
Him I am glad this video helped you - thanks for watching. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Very helpful! Thanks 🙏🏼
Hi, glad you liked the video. Enjoy ;-)
Hello again, I realise this video is two old, however, I keep going over all seven automated videos. I have watch all your videos several times, trying to embed the information into my mind. For some time now I have been expecting to move home, so all my layout and locos, CS3 etc. are in crates. So, at the moment I am writing down against my new layout plan what and how to do specific things. I was thinking of the breaking modules because I intend to keep my locos sound etc. when stopped, however, I have notice you may have a cheaper, and better solution. When creating Routes and macros, you seem to be able to change a locos speed. Is it possible to enter 0kmh so the loco stops with the sound and then starts up again, similar to the braking module? I expect you to say yes. Even if this can only control one particular loco, within the Route macro. I would be grateful if you can confirm and or add any comments. Not seen many new videos lately from, I do love them………. TonyH
Hi Tony, yes changing the loco speed to 0 means it will brake and stop the locomotive. You can see here how the BR 185 starts with speed 60 increases to 80 at C12 and breaks at C11: ruclips.net/video/ieAltkA_WDw/видео.html. Making automation with the CS3 events requires a lot of patience and testing - but always fun when you make it work. However, start with something simple - as an example movement where the trains cannot collide. Enjoy and have fun with events ;-) Bo
Hello Bo, thank you for the added info. I will take it slowly as you advise. TonyH
Thanks for this video - I needed your explanation of the red isolater caps because I kept shoving them in the the middle of the two metal bits !
Hi Peter, glad the video helped. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Hi.. If switching from AC power to DC power is the initiator for the loc-decoder to start breaking, isn't sufficient just to install a switch relay, where the breaking sections is either 1) Powered with AC directly (train continuous through the breaking section) 2) Powered with AC running through a 24V rectifier bridge, which will enable the breaking functionality in the loc-decoder Will this not give the same result ?
Hi Stephan to a certain extent you are correct - however you need to consider the crossover from the track with track power (what you call AC) to the DC area. The issue is that this will short circuit the layout and damage the locomotive decoders - potentially also on other locomotives on the layout. If you are looking into braking modules also consider other brands as the Märklin ones are rather expensive. However, Märklin guarantees that theirs work with Märklin equipment. Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
I am about to get the marklin batman train set
Hi Joshua, Awesome! this is a really great set - hope you enjoy it! HAve fun ;-) Bo
Thanks! Fantastic content. My dad is getting back into Marklin HO so I enjoy learning more to help “look over his shoulder” making him a bit more tech savvy. Cheers.
Hi, I am glad that you like the videos and I hope your dad enjoy getting back to Märklin. I hope you will have fun with the trains. I assume getting back also mean discovering digital model trains - which to me is truly a delight to play with. Thanks for the Super thanks - all donations go to making new videos on the channel. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Hi I bought this set but I can't connect the wires to start the train. Could you help me?
Hi, It's been a while since I bought this one so I barely remember it ;-) If you look in the video at 3:30 (click the numbers) then you can see the instructions. Look to the left for "N-gleis". You have to cut the connectors of the wire and connect it to the track connectors as illustrated. You can see the wire you need to connect to the track at 4:00. You cut the existing connectors for Ho-scale off. At 4:29 you see the connectors you need to put on the track. If I remember correctly, you push them into the track between two ties - one from each side so they connect to each their track. Then you connect the wire to these - you can see at 5:19 how it looks when it is connected. Also ask your favorite model train store for help. Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
These videos are so helpful. A real resource for the community. Thank you.
Hi, glad the videos are useful! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Hi Bo. You've really made such wel informed videos. Thank you so much for your hard work. Do you know if there is a slider conversion for Hornby or Bachmann? Cheers in advance
Hi Roger, Glad you like the videos and hope you find what you are looking for! slider conversion for Hornby or Bachmann - well I do not know of anything out of the box. You have to experiment in the same way I did in this video. You can use a Märklin slider and there are many variants. The issue will probably be limited space under the boogies. This could be handled in two ways: create space or even put the slider on a trailing car that is permanently connected. Unfortunately, I do not have direct experience with these two brands. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Seems to be a great idea for laying track but the cost of this stuff is for the (very!) wealthy of model railroaders!
Hi Will, indeed this is more costly than flex track. However, it is easier for beginners to get reliable track using these tracks. For a larger layout I would indeed consider cheaper alternatives. I like the Kato N-gauge track as I build temporary layouts where they are very useful. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Excellent done! Great video and learned (again) nice things. I'll come back like you aks at the endin the video. In the meanwhile we're 4 months further and I don't see new video's. Hopelfully you come back soon with more. Thanks in any case for the many great video's! See ya 🙂
Hi, glad you like the videos, and you find them useful. Yes - unfortunately work has been busy, and I need to get back to filming again. I hope to soon put more videos on the channel. Enjoy ;-) Bo
@@ModelTrainFun Thanks ! Understandable, work is priority. No stress 🙂 . Looking forward (but a your tempo) to your interesting video's of this wonderfull hobby ! Thanks in advance Bo !
These videos really are very usefull and agreable to watch. I already learned a lot by watching them.Thank you so much for making them!🙂
Hi, I am glad you like the videos! Have fun with trains ;-) Bo
Tak for videoen.
Ja - den nyeste version of Märklins vectron er blevet markant forbedret. Hygge ;-) Bo
My son is 7 years old. Is this set the right thing for this age?
Hi Benjamin, according to Märklin the set is suitable for kids from 6 years and up. I do not have kids, nor have I had kids play with my set, so I cannot confirm this. However, it is reasonably sturdy, and the controller is easy to use. If you decide to get it, please let me know how your son likes it. BTW - one of my viewers has a young grand son and I see he is able to play with the MS2 - which is more advanced. check out his channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCl_CfAmK885Ir3DSJCkp1aQ Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Very helpful thank you. I have just bought a sound equipped three rail locomotive (by mistake) so rather than return it to Germany, I thought I'd experiment with 3 rail.
Hi, glad you liked the video. Indeed the 3 rail Märklin does not run on 2 rail. It can be converted to a 2 rail, but it is often not easy. Have fun with trains! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Good evening I have been following you for a week, I have a CS3 control panel and I am on the video for the Link 88 and S88 Link, I have a question before continuing on this path: I heard at the club that I am part of that it would be necessary to cut the strip under track C to make retrosignaling and that it is necessary to do the same thing to all the tracks. Can you confirm this operation. Thank you for your answer. Kind regards
Hi Daniel, if you are asking about how to make the contact track, then yes you need to cut a certain place underneath the C-track. The C-track is made for this operation. You can see more about how to create and troubleshoot contact tracks in this video: ruclips.net/video/2FMWxEPm__Y/видео.html Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
This is super helpful, excellent work
Hi Stan, I am glad you liked the video! Enjoy ;-) Bo
this helps me out perfect thx!!!!!!!
Hi, I am glad the video helped! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Another great video that is a big help to all Märklin-users. Ayone who knows the answer to these questions, please: 1) Does the WiFi router need to be connected to the internet, or is it enough that it has power (to receive and transmit signals)? 2) How is a slave CS2 or CS3 connected? Via ethernet cable to the router? 3) How many WLAN Mobile Stations can be on the same WiFi network?
Hi, I am glad you liked the video! Answers: 1) The WiFi router does not need to be connected to the internet. It is important that the MS WLAN and the CS2/3 is connected to the same router. 2) The CS2/3 must be connected to the same router. The CS2/3 must be connected using a cable as it does not have Wi-Fi capabilities. You can buy some USB Wi-Fi devices that can be plugged into the CS2/3. I have been told it works but have not tried it myself. It was even mentioned in a video on the Märklin RUclips channel. However, no mention of USB WiFi device brand or other requirements, so it might work or might not. 3) If you are using the WLAN receiver box, then 4 MS WLANs can be connected. I do not remember a limit on number of mobile stations (wired or WLAN) that can be connected. I seem to recall 10 mentioned somewhere, but cannot find the source again... There might not be a specific limit? Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
@@ModelTrainFun Thank you very much for these good answers
What a mess of cables, you've gone around the track so much that I've gotten lost. Well, I'll try it tomorrow, now a whiskey and go to sleep. thanks
Hi Pellas, yes - a lot of cables. Try it out - it is not too difficult, but the contact tracks can be sensitive. Ensure good power, well connected wires and clean track/wheels. Have fun ;-) Bo
The fact that 2 wires can run all those LEDs in that combination signal is impressive.
Hi, do remember to size your wires according to power consumption. But yes, LEDs do not use a lot of power, and they last a lot longer. Enjoy ;-) Bo
sir, what if the ethernet port is damaged? Is there any alternative for the connection?
Hi Mohammad, if the ethernet port on the router is damaged I would buy a new one. If you are talking about the ethernet port on the CS3, then you should be able to get a USB WiFi device that can plug into the CS3. The use of USB WiFi was mentioned on Märklin RUclips channel - however, they did not mention brand or requirements to the device. I have not tried it myself. It may/may not work. Look for a device with low power consumption that works by default with Linux (the CS3 runs Linux). Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Enjoy watching Marklins series about this, but enjoyed your video even more. Been looking online at the few retailers here in the US that sell Marklin trains to see what kind of sets they have available.
Hi, I am glad you enjoyed the video! As you are from US, please do remember that Märklin do not produce many US locomotives and cars. If you are into local trains, then perhaps Märklin is not the right for you. Märklin is also not compatible with the brands you typically find in US as it uses a 3-rail solution. Also consider choosing a system/brand your friends have so you have somebody to exchange tips'n'trick with. If you decide on Märklin I can highly recommend it. Enjoy ;-) Bo
@ModelTrainFun I actually ordered a starter set and cars under the Trix line since it's just a 2 rail version of Marklin. In theory, I should be able to run Trix on the same layout I run my US freight trains on. I figure later on, I'll buy a Marklin set and run the Trix wagons with it.
@@SOU6900 Sounds great - have fun with the starter set! Enjoy ;-) Bo
I tried that connection for signal 76493, but for some reason all the lights of the signal just are on at the same time. The decoder's relay seems to be working, though.
Hi Anselmi, Not sure what is wrong - did you manage to fix it? Enjoy ;-) Bo
The older signals such as 70391 are also mfx. The new models 70393 are in addition to mfx also DCC and FX. Maybe it is so that other system can use Marklin signals?
Hi Anders, you are absolutely right the 70391 also supports MFX. I agreed, I believe the reason Märklin added DCC is to support Trix and other systems. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Hi, nice video. Do you know how should I program the main signal(76493) into the Mobile station in the same way you programmed those signals into it? What DIP switches, for example, should I use?
Now that I tried programming and set the address to 27, the signal decoder does click when I press the red/green buttons, but nothing happens with the signal. The signal just shows all of its tree aspects(Hp0,hp1 and Hp2) at the same time.
Hi, Did you manage to make it work? Enjoy ;-) Bo
@@ModelTrainFun No I didn’t. I took the signal to the local model railway shop and I’m now waiting if they could make it work.
@@vljt8960 Sounded weird - hope they make it work. This is the benefit of buying in the local shop. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Are these tracks compatible for running HO scale model trains ?
Hi Faizul, these are N-gauge and are not compatible with H0 scale. If you are looking for 2-rail tracks that can be clicked together Kato also make some H0-scale tracks, but also Trix has this. If you are into Märklin (3-rail) use the Märklin version. Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
I'm hooked to model trains because of this so-called "teaser".
Hi Nendra, model train is a Great hobby I can highly recommend it. However, do look around to see what brand and type of trains you would like to have. I can recommend Märklin but there are also others around. Welcome to the hobby and have fun! Enjoy ;-) Bo
you said that m84 does not take pwer from the tracks, but if I connect it to m83 does it take power from this or does it always need its own power sup?
Hi Vito, both the m84 and m83 connect to the track power in order to power the electronics. However, the m84 can take power from another power source (as shown in this video) for the accessory you connect to the m84 output. The m83 will always use track power for the accessory connected to the output. You can connect m83s and m84s together to power the electronics of them all (chain them) and still have an alternative power for the m84 accessoires. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Nice and interesting video. I want to ask with the Cs3 can I connect a maerklin path and one with Trix naturally separate?
Hi Vito, I am glad you liked the video! Yes, you can connect both Märklin and Trix layout to the same CS3 - even at the same time. However, you need to ensure you are still within the power limits of the CS3 whan taking the total power consumption into consideration. If you mix the two layout types, you should also consider that some decoders in the "DCC" worlds do not like the MM protocol. Hence, consider using only DCC and MFX on the Märklin layout to avoid also sending MM to the Trix layout. Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Really nice video.when will you comment on how to use m84 for ghost station? How many light mast for example can I join for each red or green dot on M84?
Hi Vito, Glad you liked this video! I am not sure that I get the question on the "ghost station". How many lights you can connect? This depends on your power source and the power consumption of the lights. On the Märklin 60842 the maximum current load per group (red/green) is 5 amps. The Viessmann 5080 clock in this video is specified as 10 mA and I assume the Faller 180110 is about the same. Hence, if you have a power supply that can supply the max 5 amps, then you can theoretically have approx 500 clocks or lights per re/green group. However, the length of wire will also influence this - and any resistor you add would also have to subtract this, then you might only be able to have 100-200 lights? You have to try it out, but you using LEDs you can power a considerable amount of lights. Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Sorry I completely got the question wrong. I wanted to know how many groups of light poles, for example, can be placed on each exit of the m84, i.e. how many exit 1 can support, how many exit 2 etc. I hope I was clear this time. thanks@@ModelTrainFun
Just came across this video and product from Viessmann. Well presented information. Now I am going g to have to try one of these with my CS3. Thanks for sharing this. Tom
Hi Tommy, I really like these ones - work really well. Enjoy ;-) Bo
Another great video and explanation, thank you Bo! I have a couple of questions: 1. Can I use m84 decoder instead of m83? Does the Brake Module 72442 allow me to connect multiple traffic lights?
Hi Pedro, Glad you like the video! As I understand it you cannot use the m84 for this - at least not according to any manual from Märklin that I have seen. Can it be done - not sure? Multiple traffic lights (signals?) - if they need to show the same yes - otherwise one brake module per signal. This quickly becomes very expensive. If you have automation, consider using CS3 events or software instead - then you do not need the brake module. Check out the Automation playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLYAhs-Pox3sHzQJsNU-FmOEj1ylO-NPpV Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Hello. Again a great help thanks to your videos. Much appreciated. And yes I now can enjoy my new mobile station
Hi Stefan - great to hear - have fun with trains! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Hello Bo, I d like to slow down automatically all my loks entering the station area.Imagine there are two tracks, can I do what you did with my 2 tracks on same M83 output ( adress), inserting the M83 trigger in my différent évents ( one différent évent route to each track)? Using CS3
Hi Bernard, You cannot use the brake module to change speed of the locomotive. However, if you have the CS3 with L88/S88 then you do have more control over the trains and do not need the brake module. As an example, check out this video: ruclips.net/video/MtZ1MYwOLDY/видео.html. You can find all videos on automation here: ruclips.net/p/PLYAhs-Pox3sHzQJsNU-FmOEj1ylO-NPpV. However, this is a much more complex way of controlling your layout and it requires quite some trial and error. Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Very helpful, thanks!
Hi Ali, glad you found it helpful! Enjoy ;-) Bo
I love your way of teaching.Marklin should thanks you...
Hi Bernard, Thanks for your encouragement and I am glad you like the videos, and they help you! Enjoy ;-) Bo
What a job ! Brilliant..
Hi Bernard, glad you liked the video! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Wonderful ,it makes things so clear.Tlx.
Hi Bernard, I hope you have fun with the CS3- thanks! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Fantastic, so helpful.
Thanks Bernard! Enjoy ;-) Bo
Thanks to you, I'm learning to use CS3 more precisely. I run a G-scale train in South Korea, but the programming technique you teach me is very helpful. Once again, thank you very much for your hard work. 👍
Hi Bopop - glad you like the videos! Enjoy ;-) Bo
