      @@ModelTrainFun : Hello Bo, thanks for responding. Yeah, I am building my final life’s layout after we bought a new house 2 years ago. Half of the basement is mine, combining all the old Maerklin from 50-60 years ago, all my DC 2 rail tracks and now also K track with digital control into one. Another challenge is the theme: one side USA, other side Germany and the Alps incl. Neuschwanstein. Mountains in between to separate. Several stations and a very large switiching yard with 30 stable round house. The CS3 will help to realize to combine . And your automation tutorials finally pointed me in the right direction- very very helpful and perfectly presented!! You are a pro!

    Hi Bo, really amazing what you can all do with just a CS3! Personally, I still prefer the computer operated approach, simply due to the variety of options and easier programming, but am impressed by your efforts!
    Keep on TRAINing!

      Hi Axel, I agree with you that using software automation (computer operated approach) is easier. However, you can get quite far with the CS3. The purpose of this series is to help those who have a CS3 and want to do automation with it. On large layouts I would go for software automation as well. I have already played with TrainController and intend to look into this in future videos. I understand you have experience with this? Any tips? Enjoy model trains ;-)

    I wish you all the best for the new year and keep up the good work with your educational videos. I learned a lot from it and thanks to you I now have an automation of some trains; in the staging station and in the main station by using a random macro. Just what I wanted for my new digital layout. Now in the new year I can focus on finishing the scenery. Test modus is over. But I will continue to follow you for further digital advice. Hello! Do you have a video on how to connect and use mDecoderTool with CS3?

    • @ModelTrainFun
      @ModelTrainFun  2 года назад +1

      Hi,
      No unfortunately not. I have experimented a little with it and interestingly you can use it directly with a CS3. So far I have not had a use for it. I usually only tweak decoders and this can be done directly from the CS3 - no need for the mDecoderTool.
      Märklin has a video on how to use the mDecoderTool - unfortunately, in German: ruclips.net/video/7wyzAi84Jic/видео.html
      I did install and try the program with the CS3 - it was intuitive to install, startup and connect to the CS3. Did not do any programming...

    I carefully followed the different episodes of CS3 automation. But some points remain unclear to me.
    In ''CS3 Layout Automation: Experimenting with Routes, Signals & Train Movement (Automation Episode 5)'', the train movement chapter shows an indicator as the first element (green light) and a train picture with the sign (+ ) on contact ''C1''. as another element. But no explanation: You'll show that later on, you say.
    * What are their functions and usefulness in a route event or a train movement event?
    * What do they allow to do or avoid?
    * Where should they be in such CS3 events?
    I hope to receive your answers and valuable information.
    * CS3 contains many macros: When will you talk about them?
    I built your layout with the lights and turnouts from Episode 5. But I can't seem to avoid collisions at turnouts T2, T3, T4, and T5. You don't give any event that contains how to create the ad hoc events. I would like to have your detailed events to understand what is missing in my own events.
    Finally, last question: Will there be a sequel to the first 7 episodes? I hope so.

    • @ModelTrainFun
      @ModelTrainFun  Год назад

      Hi Jean-Claude,
      Automation is complex and requires a lot of experimentation - please continue to experiment and find the way that fits you. The experimentation series shows how I do it and how it makes sense to me. In this context let me try to answer your questions below.
      In episode 5 I did not successfully make a good way to avoid train collisions. The issue was always that something could go wrong, and all trains just stopped. The main trick was for trains coming from C14 to always wait if C11 was occupied, C4 train to wait for C11 and C14 and C2 trains to wait for C4, C11 and C14. Hence, I make it such that every direction that entered the intersection waiting in a kind of prioritized order. The I303 light is used to indicate intersection occupied. This means trains at C11 could freely enter when I303 is not lit, C14 trains can only enter when no train at C11 and I303 is lit, C4 trains can only enter when no train at C11, C14 and I303 is lit, and so on. However, this way is not fool proof as two trains arriving almost simultaneously at C11 and C14 could collide. Consider the case where the C14 train arrives a millisecond before the C11 train arrives. The C14 train decides to continue into the intersection as there is no train on C11. It reserves the I303 light (turns it on) and continues. However, the C11 train arrives just after the C14 train looked if there is a train on C11 and before the I303 light it turned on. Then the C11 train also continues into the intersection. Hence - not foolproof and it happened more often that you would think... At the end I used the dispatcher strategy in episode 7 to avoid collisions - this one is fool proof.
      The green "continue" light in the train movements in episode 5 are not described until episode 6. They are used to be able to stop all trains on the layout when they arrive at certain points and be able to continue. The idea is that if the "continue" light is on (green),
      then the train is allowed to continue - otherwise it must wait.
      The train picture on C1 unfortunately I did not get to explain in the episodes - for now I suggest you ignore this one. It will show the position on the train on the diagram but is not needed.
      I do not talk individually about the CS3 macros, but some of them are used throughout the episodes. However, some of the macros I do not find useful. As an example, I find using the shuttle macro cumbersome and it is poorly documented and complex to use. It is easier to make the train movement yourself.
      I do intend to create more episodes on automation at a later stage. Until then if you need help drop me an email with a picture of your layout and what you are trying to achieve. I will try to help over email (you find my email in the "About" on the channel page).
      Enjoy ;-)

    hi Bo I must admit i enjoy watching your informative videos. May i ask you if you could do a video about setting up the transfer table with remote control. Unfortunately Marklin do make it easy to understand their user manual with their limited amount of .nformation and the video is in german and i do not understand german. As usual my setup contains cs3+ and m84s I would like to control the transfer table through my m84 if it does not incurr me to purchase additional units to work the transfer table as shown in the video. Thanks and take care. Keep up the good videos

      @ModelTrainFun  6 месяцев назад

      Hi Alf,
      I am glad you like the videos and are enjoying them!
      The transfer table? Are you talking about Märklin 72941? Looking at the manual on page 11 and 13 it looks a little special, but not too difficult: static.maerklin.de/damcontent/4f/dc/4fdc5f4409b769f9d17820fe3c9f2aae1644223520.pdf
      It seems to me the difficult part is you need an extra transformer with a resister and a couple of diodes. This is needed to make it possible for the m84 to change direction. The interesting part is that one output is used to change the direction of the transfer tabls (called button 1 in the manual), while the outer output is used to move the table (button 2). As far as I can see it seems that the table moves automatically and will stop when it is green - I might be wrong on this one?
      Unfortunately, I do not have the transfer table, but if you email me I can try to help over email. Find my email here: www.youtube.com/@ModelTrainFun/about
      Hope this helped a little? Enjoy ;-) Bo

    Hi Your video are very useful, not only for CS3 stuff but also all the videos about M83, M84 etc... It's very clear even for a french speaking person like me. Many thanks. May I ask you if the CS3 is really the best solution for larger layout or should I go to a computer software solution (I have only a Mobile station 2). In this case, which are the best one ?

    • @ModelTrainFun
      @ModelTrainFun  Год назад

      Hi Michel,
      I am glad you like the videos. What to do for a larger layout? I like the CS3 it is a great control station and a great improvement to the MS2. However, if you are going to do advanced automation then I would recommend a computer software solution. However, remember that in order to connect the computer software to the track you need a control station.
      I like the CS3 because it has a lot of functionality, and you can drive the trains manual or semi-automatic. If you have a computer software solution you can connect it to the CS3 and you can combine the two. You can see the CS3 as the steppingstone to advanced automation, but you can also see it as an unnecessary purchase.
      If you only want to do a computer software solution, I am not sure which control station is best. You can use the CS3 - or you could buy a used CS2. I understand that there are also other solutions that connect directly to the computer - most of these do not use MFX. But if you have a computer solution you will not be too bothered with MFX as you would probably use DCC with MM2/FX as an escape.
      To be honest I am not sure what is the best way forward. The CS3 is expensive but opens both worlds. I chose to go this way, but I am unsure if there are other cheaper solutions.
      Let me know what you think and what you choose. Enjoy ;-)

    Your videos provide a wealth of information to cs3 users but they are way too long. On top of that, it's just way too much information all at once. Make them shorter and cover two or three topics at once. Nobody builds your layout exactly, they are only interested in how certain things work on the cs3. Really, with videos of 15 to 20 minutes you reach a lot more people. And don't tell everything 20 times. People who watch the videos are already working and familiar with the basic techniques so you don't have to repeat everything constantly. Don't get me wrong, this is just constructive criticism!, I just miss good videos on youtube on the concept of cs3 programming. Even Märklin falls short in this and you have so much knowledge that I just think it's a shame that you make it all so complex.

    • @ModelTrainFun
      @ModelTrainFun  Год назад +1

      Hi Richard,
      I always appreciate constructive criticism - thanks for commenting on this. I am not a professionel video creator and I continuously try to improve.
      I do agree with the fact that I often end up with making the videos very long. It is not always easy to break videos into smaller pieces. However, shorter videos are better and you will see that I do improve in later videos. I also add chapters enabling viewers to jump in the videos. This is to help when it get's too boring and to be able to go back and use them as reference videos later. Some of my older videos are not meant to be watched in one sitting, but rather to be a comprehensive reference. However, I myself also appreciate shorter videos on RUclips, so I do whole heartily agree with this ;-)
      As for the layout - not sure I get this one. The video actually talks about the general case of how to automate a train station and then applies it to one example?
      Also consider: this is not a tutorial, but an experimentation. There are so many ways of programming the CS3 and making automation of trains, stations, shadow stations, etc. The main purpose of automation experimentation videos is to experiment with one way of doing this. The idea is that the automation experimentation videos at some point in time gets turned into smaller tutorial videos more in the style you are looking for. However, for now it is an experiment on ways to do the automation. I have already gotten several suggestions on how one could do it differently and will look into this in the future. However, making a short and sweet set of CS3 programming videos is not an easy task and will take me a loooooooong time (if I ever get there). This is just a step on the way to make better videos.
      The repetition is intentional both to make sure it is remembered and to enable some chapters to be more self-contained such they can be used as references. However, you are right - I tend to over do this one ;-)
      Thanks for your valuable input I will do my best to improve. Enjoy ;-)
