How difficult is it to Video Birds in Flight with the OM1mkII and the 150-400mm Lens ?
In this short video, I show both stills and video footage of Gannets and other seabirds in flight. I talk about the difficulty of videoing a bird in flight in comparrison to taking `stills`, and I explain the differnce between shooting video footage at normal speed, comparred to shooting in slow motion. In all examples I use the OM1mkII and the 150-400mm lens.

    Hi Roger, perfect educational videos, unique in character and very beneficial in terms of demonstrating OM capabilities. I have related questions about the OM-5, which I'm thinking of as a macro camera for a super light setup, because I spend several hours in neck-breaking positions where every gram is noticeable. Can I ask for a comparison of the OM-5 with the OM1mkii, in terms of max. fps and range of shutter speeds, with automatic stacking? At the same time, what is the max. number of possible preset shots in a series? Please compare both. Also, what is the maximum number of flash shots for both when using onboard bracketing? I mean everything in sync with the flash and under ideal conditions, i.e. with a fast sync.flash with a full battery, at low ISO. This information is very hard to find online. Thank you very much in advance for your answer and for all the work you do, I really enjoy this form of education😊👍BR, Charlie

    Agreed videos of birds in flight is not easy. I use the 100-400 or the 300 f4. I find my best shots are keeping in mind birds take off into the wind and following from the start at 120. I have not tried 240 and I may give it a go. I’d do enjoy puffins as they are a pretty bird and shooting pelicans when they are around. Video editing is a whole new challenge.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883 18 дней назад

      I totally agree with you that editing video is a new challenge. It took some time before I could do it confidently. Certainly videoing a flying bird is very difficult. Once you get used to it taking stills is a doddle ! Videoing and tracking, plus keeping it central in the viewfinder is the hardest part. When shooting in slow motion, you have can initially lock on to the bird with the autofocus, but if the bird flies towards or away from you it will loose focus. Focusing a bird in flight manually is incredibly difficult. The advantage of 240 fps is you only have to have 2seconds in focus to obtain a 10 second clip.

      Thanks for commenting. We are all different in our use of ProCap, and settings may vary. I intend to make a video on this in the next few weeks. Your 12 PreShutter and 30 total is slig the wrong way round to me. Your taking a totalof 30 shots, -12 before,- and 18 after. If it was me , I would have it the other way around. 18 before, and 12 after. Dont forget that you do not fully press the shutter for ProCap until you have seen the action, so thats why you want more BEFORE , and less AFTER. This will account for human reaction time. Hope this helps.

      @@rogerhance5883 Thanks for the really quick reply, Roger. I have trouble with that so I'm going to try what you're suggesting. It certainly makes sense. I'm thinking with damsel flies, dragonflies hummingbirds, etc. they go away so fast. You really don't need a lot of after shutter press images. You have helped me out so much with my OM one Mark two. I had an EM one Mark two for a number of years and it unfortunately, went into the lake when my kayak capsized when I was out taking pictures of turkey vulture fledglings. The camera could not be salvaged, but luckily I had good insurance so the replacement was the OM one mark two. But it's so different. It's taking me a long time to figure it out. Thank you for the very kind comment. Its much appreciated. The 40-15mm F2.8 plus a converter should work fine. I would probably use the 1.4 rather than the 2x. Not that the 2x converter is bad, but when you go from 1.4 to 2x you loose 2 stops of light. Hope this helps, and thanks for the kind comment.

      @@rogerhance5883 If I'm not too far away, perhaps I could use flash? My problem is I bought a 2X converter when I first got started with Olympus and my longest lens was the 40 to 150. • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883 23 дня назад

      @@treebeard909 Using your 2x converter will be fine. The reason I said to use a 1.4 converter is that I assumed you had one. Most people, when buying converter, go for the 1.4 first, and then buy the 2x after that. You will still only be F5.6 with the 2x, so thats fine. Personally, I would not use flash. Unless you can get it dead right, it will darken the background. Also with flash, you cannot do a burst mode because of the recycling time, so my advice would be to increase the ISO and use natural light. I tend to avoid flash like the plague, but thats mainly because I am not confident with it. Hope this helps.

    I did a lot of orchid photography back in the days of film. I used to use Kodachrome 64 (64 iso) and a typical shutterspeed was 1/250 sec. I used to lug a huge Benbo tripod around and a cable release. I used to take hours getting a few decent pics. These days I still curse about windy conditions but we can now use 1600 plus iso and machine gun it handheld with no mirror slap to worry about either. We are truly spoiled. Nice one Roger. Focus stacking hand held is always a bit of a challenge because of macro shakes but generally with no wind and a high shutter speed I manage about 90% of the time. I like thew idea of using a bean-bag though.

    Great walkthrough - your organization and the focus and calmness of your delivery makes it very easy to listen to and to absorb the information. I also really enjoy seeing what people produce when they're not doing what they usually do and, unsurprisingly, the results didn't disappoint. Thanks for the insights - i'm using HDR to shoot in coastal caves with my X... it's a bit of a hit and miss affair so far but a super useful feature to have access to. Cheers and all the very best from New Zealand.

    Another excellent vid Roger. I was there a few days ago, only a couple of others in the hide but dslr sounded like an old typewriter clattering😮. Question regarding the 150-400 if i may, how does it perform at distance? I currently use the 400 f4 with the om mkii and find i often need to crop and lose definition making the shots useless. I am seriously considering the 100-400 but at the cost, it needs to perform of course. Thanks for your time and effort putting the vids together.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883 Месяц назад

      Thanks for the kind comment Brian. The 150-400mm is fine at the 400mm end of the lens, even with the 1.25 extender. Its even very good with the 1.4 extender and the 1.25, although you may notice a very slight differnce if you pixcel peep. There is definately a slight loss in quality with the 2x converter. The 100-400 is a very good lens for the price, but its not as good as the 300mm F4 or the 150-400mm. If you are thinking of buying the 150-400mm, and you are in the UK, email me via my web site, and I will be able to give you a discount code.

    Beautiful images and the blurred background makes it pop out. When you were shooting the focus stack from the side of the butterfly, what was you focus differential?

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883 Месяц назад

      Thanks for the kind comment. Off the top of my head, I cannot remember. It will not show the differential in the metadata. Generlly speaking, if I am photographing sideways on and the wings are fold reasonably parallel to the body. , -a differential of 2 or 3 will be fine. I photographed a Popular Hawk moth a few weeks ago, and the wings on that were out, so a lot more depth of focus needed. On that occasion, I used a differntial of 6. It depends on the subject. Hope this helps.

    I’ll have to try topaz. I only have the 100-400 on the Om-1 mk1 and frequently have low or poor light. Lots of noisy images. I wonder if the lens has anything to do with it.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883 Месяц назад

      Thanks for commenting. Its unlikely its the lens, although having a lens with a faster aperture would alow you to drop the ISO. generally speaking, Topaz De Noise will know any digital nosie on the head. You cannot but DeNosie as a stand alone piece of software any more. You have to buy Topaz Ai, which has Topaz Sharpen Ai, Topaz Gigapixel and DeNoise all in one piece of software. It is worth the money.
