Fox Cubs with the OM1mkII - Is the autofocus better than on the OM1 ?

  • In this video, I show both stills and video footage of some Fox Cubs that I have photographed recently. All stills and footage are taken using the OM1mkII and the 150-400mm lens. I explain the set up I used, and talk about why I think that for shooting video, the autofocus on the OM1mkII is a lot better than on the OM1.

    Must have missed this video Roger. What fabulous footage! Has probably answered my question about Af over the mk 1 for stills.

      Thanks for commenting. For stills, its difficult to see the improvement of the OM1mkII. You certainly see it when shooting video.

    Super Video Roger. Lovely to see the Fox cub interaction. Good to see other people using Camo as its really important not to disturb your subjects. I am often amazed by people who wear Camo and then have a great big white lens on show, good to see just how you blend into the background.
    Would you say on Video that the OM1 mk2 is as good as the Panasonic G92. There are a number of RUclipsrs who recon its not, your view would be good to know, keep up the interesting work. Regards.

      Hi Philip. Thanks for commenting, and glad you liked the video. I cannot really comment on the Panasonic G9mkII, as I do not have that camera. (I consdiered t though ) MIke Lane has bith the G9mkII and the OM1mkII, so he could give you a more accurate opinion. Mike told me that when the G9mkII came out, he decided to shoot all his video on the G9mkII, and all his stills on the OM1. Since he bought the OM1mkII, I believe he shoots all his normal video (4k 60fps HD) on the OM1mkII, (because the video is improved) and only uses the G9mkII for slow motion video. (4K 120frps) Hope this helps to answer you question.

    Lovely footage. Been in New Zealand for 17 years now, but miss the foxes (although glad we don't have them here as they would decimate the natives). As an OM-1 user I really appreciate the comparison with the mk2. As a mainly stills photographer, I'd rather keep the mk1 and spend any money I have on better lenses. If I shot more video the situation would be different

    Great stuff Roger and I do agree the video AF is way better from your footage. I don't have OM1.2 but have been wanting to trade one of my OM1.1 for it with the current promotion here in the US. If auto focus and AI detection would work on high speed (slow mo- video), I would not think too much about it. After all, I likely will hold off as I am not shooting much video. Cheers~.

    Great video. I love the photos and video clips. I traded in the OM-1 for the OM-1 MkII and have been shooting with the OM-1 MkII for 3 months now. I totally agree with your findings. The is a slight improvement in AF for still photography and the AF for video is now very useable.

      If I'd plan to use 300 mm f4 pro, there is focus clutch to video in manual (of course for zooming lenses it's good to have autofocus better than manual as you would have to work on zoom and focus at the same time..), then should I just go OM-1 without any worries of autofocus performance? I am interested in BIF and Waterfowl a most, though I photograph everything, from macro to birds on branch, etc. Or should I invest more to OM-1 mark II?

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  4 месяца назад

      @@pentagramyt417 Difficult one to answer. To be honest , the OM1 is a damn good camera. I am going out tomorrow and will not be shooting video, so I will probably use my OM1. The OM1 is cheaper (and at the moment you get a Fee 2X converter when you buy it ) For birds in flight and waterfowl the OM1 is brilliant. I tend to mainly use the mkII now because once I have a few stills in the bag, I can quickly shart to shoot video.

  • @ryantang8146

    Not sure you have tried the latest firmware update with the OM-1 ? After the update, I find the video af is a lot more reliable than before. I used to hunt so much for focus now it is a lot more stable and more useable after the update.

    • @rogerhance5883

      Thanks for commenting Catherine. I use subject detection and C-AF. I dont use C-AF+TR any more. I did initially when the OM1 first came out, but I now only us subject detection and C-AF.

    A beautiful video thank you. I would take issue with you over the stills AF performance compared to the mk1 (8.15). I have found exactly the improvement you describe when taking stills. I have found that tracking birds, if they pass behind an obstruction such as branches, they do remain in focus and are in focus when they emerge (as did your foxes). The frames whilst behind the branches show the birds to be in focus (though it doesn't make for good composition). I have also found subject recognition is better where the subject is relatively small and hiding in cover. It's not surprising that you see little improvement as the mk1 is a fine camera, and if used as you were doing, concealed with a tripod, you would probably see little change. Used in the open, hand held, the mk2 has made a significant difference to the number of my successful images.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  4 месяца назад

      Hi Bob, Thanks for commenting. I wondered if anyone would comment about this. With the mkII, I have found there to be a definate improvement in the autofocus for stills , but its more difficult to see or measure the difference with stills. With video, the improvement difference is a lot more obvious. Being an OM System Abassador, I have had people message me to say that they do not think its much better, or any better at all, so I tend not to `overplay` the improvement in autofocus to much. It saves starting a range war, and I also dont want to `rubbish` the OM1 ! When the OM1 was released, there was a massive improvement in autofocus compared to the EM1X or the EM1mkIII. The improvement on the mkII is not as evident as when the OM1 was released.

    • @boboneill1828
      @boboneill1828 4 месяца назад

      @@rogerhance5883 I guess so much depends on how you use the camera. There are several improvements which have not been mentioned by Ambassadors.
