Another gorgeous and educational video Henry. We've just returned from the lakes (staying in Ambleside), we don't do hikes, but we did do a drive from Ambleside to Carlisle, going through some awesome scenery. Came back to Ambleside via the M6 which was so boring but quicker. We love the Lake District. As we love your brilliant videos. Regards Rob.
Most cameras allow you to shoot into the "extended" ISO range - Olympus has 2 stops on each side of their "native" ISO range - on the low side, it gives you an interpolated ISO100 and ISO64. But the tradeoff is that you lose a little dynamic range with you go into that area. Another thing that's fun to play with: if your camera has pixel shifting (on Olympus it's the "High Res Shot" function), you can get the blur in your water at a higher shutter speed than you think. Your camera is taking 8+ images at your default exposure then combining for a higher resolution image - the side benefit to this mode is that it will virtually eliminate any noise in the image and give you a longer exposure - think of 8 shots at 1/60th of a second, means that the combined image is 8/60th, or 1/8th second (and Olympus will give you a pin sharp image at that speed without batting an eye).
Enjoyed sharing this walk with you Henry - my hiking days are over due to age and a very dodgy knee but I did that walk a few years ago when fitter and younger!
What I find amazing about these hikes you take is a lot of the tracks and roads you wander are hundreds of years old! Imagine the folk whose footsteps you are following! Fabulous!❤❤
Thanks Henry another informative video about the walk you were taking, the car parking in the lakes is scandulous to say the least. really nice images, i especially like the shot you took while having your 1st food break
Cracking shot. I’ve used that feature on my Nikon D850, it’s really useful for situations like you found yourself in. I also found noise was reduced the when using these lower ISO settings.
The beautiful and simplistic life of enjoying the lakes, fells and amazing scenery everywhere...to the utter chaos of modern life with endless supermarket clubcards on a mobile device, got to laugh, love the lakes and this you tube channel 😀
Tesco meal deal and a soggy sock, can only be another Henry Turner video.😂 Your Seathwaite Tarn square crop looks great Henry, that was worth the car park fee on it's own. Top man for taking that can back down. I am always forgetting to take off the timer after using tripod.. Thanks for another great Wainwright photography day out.
Hi Henry, another grand day out thanks for sharing. Good to see the Z7 re-energised and some really nice images. As ever, suffering for your art, this time wet feet, but well worth it for that shot. Maybe pack an extra pair of socks next time and a plastic bag ( recycled one of course ) for the soggy ones. .. and thanks for picking up that can that was carelessly left behind.
am from the northeast henry ,i had a holiday over the lakes 2 years ago and found ,, they weren't happy unless they were making a killing for parking and toilets ,, an i don't even want to start about supermarkets ,, but i enjoy your channel henry its something to look forward to
Wonderful and informative video as always Henery, whenever I go out looking for a good subject I always try to do something different with my camera settings, it doesn't always work but I give it a try and I'm often surprised by the results. / Playing with the camera settings makes photography all the more fun.
Henry another great video beautiful views and images, will have to try that feature on my Nikon Z6ii, agree with you on Coniston what a lovely place will definitely be returning thanks for sharing.
Awesome, Used to love plodding up "The Old Man of Coniston" on trips to Thurston when I was young, never heard it referred to as "Coniston, Old Man" before.
Interesting location Henry & looks a great walk for a few hours.... great results with pics & yes don't skip on meals & fluids... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
This was class thanks Henry, really enjoyed the video. I recently got myself a pair of waterproof socks with a goretex lining in them and they've been a godsend when I'm in my local northumberland area doing some landscape photography. The ones I got are from a company called Sealskinz but I'm sure there are plenty more brands out there too.
I often use the "extended ISO" feature of my Olympus to get down from its 200 base to 100 or even 64. It allows a longer shutter speed when I don't have a dark enough ND filter with me. The down side is you lose a stop or more of dynamic range so, with contrasty subjects, you need to bracket.
Off topic but a bit of advice is to raise your pack higher on your back. If you feel a lot of shoulder or back strain on the hike that could alleviate a lot of it.
Thanks for your video...........I have had a Z6ii, now I'm shooting with a Z8 and I use the Lo1.0 etc frequently. Really useful for sunrise and sunset photography. I also shoot Manual so that the image doesn't change when doing "short" long exposures at the beach.
two things 1. bought the Pro/charity package through your link, but couldn't see your name, just Nigel, Mads 😞 2. Levers Water, back in the 70's we used to hike every Sunday from Torver to this little lake, strip off and swim. The joys! Great vlog as always pal!
Hope you enjoy the bundle mate 👍🏻. I didn’t have anything in it personally. I was looking the Levers Water thinking it’d be fantastic for a swim actually!!
Henry check out the Ruskin Museum in Coniston for the history of mining in the area, and as a bonus the real rebuilt Bluebird is housed there, great vid as always.
Nice video. It pays to know which path to take. On the history front, Time Team did an episode on the copper mining in that area. Yes, it goes back many centuries.
The expanded ISOs generally have degraded color data in the shot. You’d likely only notice in the most extreme scenarios. I’d try to avoid if I can and just do a quick exposure blend unless filters and a specific shutter speed are involved.
Nice one Henry! I hope Tescos are going to start paying your for advertising those meal deals! Nothing worse than wet feet but hopefully that didn't cause you too much grief in the long run! I've often wondered if those goretex socks are a good idea 😅.. anyway I've never tried that Lo ISO feature but might use it in future now I've seen how it turns out.
Cheers Henry, it’s Sean in Atlanta! This area is breathtaking! You are so fortunate to live and hike there! I’m in love with the mountains there! I’m actually watching you on my phone and my TV at the same time and I’m getting whiplash!😂 Sean
Hey Henry, thank you for taking us Up on the mountain again. Your photos are so beautiful, but I also really enjoy and appreciate the hiking side of your videos. May I ask what app you use to see the elevation of your route?
Thanks for another trip up the fells and some great photos Henry. We buckled and now pay a tenner a month to be National Trust members, so we try to stick to their car parks when we can. If we only use them once a month we get our moneys worth.
Nice hike, Henry - thank you! I've used the the lower ISO-settings on my Z7 also in the same situation as you did (as an alternative ND-filter). For a Z7 Lo 0,3 = ISO 50 and Lo 1,0 = ISO 32. It worked well for me. However, you can't keep your feet dry with it, sorry.
When Using the Lo ISO settings, you lose dynamic range as the sensor's signal is boosted (amplified) before the ADC. This only matters if you need the full dynamic range. You can get the same effect without the dynamic range loss by shooting Raw at Base ISO and then reducing exposure in Lightroom or similar software.
I need to try it but I suspect that darkening the image in Lightroom will also effectively reduce the dynamic range. On the principle that “you don’t get owt for nowt”
@@timothysmallwood2367 100% correct both of these techniques reduce the overall information you can represent. The only difference is that using Lo ISO actually reduces the range of info you can capture, note the careful use of capture and represent. Its probably a complete irrelevance in the grand scheme of things but a fun technical aspect to explore when you feel like geeking out.
That looked like exposure compensation. I use it from time to time for the same reason you used on this video. I discovered it by accident when I had dialed it down to -3.0 and it took a long time to troubleshoot why all my photos were dark. I don't think it works in manual mode IIRC.
Hi Henry. I have those ISO settings on my D500 which I use a lot for sunrise and sunsets when the light is harsh and I'm looking for movement on the coast. The low 1.0 on my D500 is equivalent to ISO 50. Fab video. Steve from Paignton
Hi Henry, just book up for there for May for my 50th! I believe using any extended iso is generally bad for several reasons which is why it probably not mentioned much. It has too many disadvantages. I.e Overall loss of colour, data and dynamic range. Better to bracket all the best Marcelo
Great video. Deffo try those sandwiches 🥪. Last time was up in the Coniston fella was in the early 80,s with school 😲. Remember staying at the youth hostel in Coniston just behind the church. When I went there a few months ago was up for sale ☹️. Will give that setting a try in the Z6 IiI.

Unless you're in a desert of course, naw, even in a desert you should take extra socks cos you'd probably find a new oasis and fall in. 😅 love your work and presentation, keep on trucking mate. 👍😎
Hiya Henry. It's turning fall here in the pacific northwest of the US and I was thinking it would be cool to see a video about shooting fall colors. Might be a neat video idea for you as I am betting you have some great insights.
Great views and shots there Henry. Well done for removing litter. I think Coniston water is where swallows and amazon's was filmed, one of my favourite movies. Is it ever clear skies in the lake district, looks so beautiful, would be great views of the milky way, but probably not enough clear skies. I know cloud is better for your photos though. I've heard there's only 1 actual lake in the lake district though, the others just classified as bodies of water. When you are just walking with the camera to show us where you are walking how are you carrying your camera...... Just curious. Anyway, thanks for another video, well done, you must be super fit getting up all those peaks
Hi Henry, just wondering which camera you’re mainly using for your videos at the moment? I think you use the osmo pocket 3 and action 4, it it? My concern with the pocket 3 is the waterproofing for being in the hills
